I've been using gen 5 for the past four years. Have not had a single problem. However it is not compatible to Windows 11 upgrade, so I went out and bought a gen 9 running Windows 11 Pro. These laptops are absolutely workhorses and completely dependable. I will stick with them.
Watching this on a T410 (16:10 aspect ratio), running Linux Mint - I connect to a modern PC with AnyDesk for Windows purposes. Suits me for now, but when it gives up the ghost, I'll be looking to this channel for ideas. Love the reviews =)
Just wait for the Gen 10 guys ( expected to be announced on CES 2022 ) , it will have the 12 th. gen Intel processor with big little architecture which has performance and efficiency cores.
I absolutely love the carbon line, I'm constantly between which one I would rather have, an X1 carbon or a Dell XP S13. Right now I'm on the XPS 13 9310 with the i7 1185 and the OLED. I absolutely love the screen, but I'm also a little disappointed in the amount of battery life I lost coming from eh XPS 9730. It's all a trade off. What I really want is an AMD APU with decent graphics in one of these nice build quality Ultrabook lines, better power efficiency when it comes to the higher power mobile CPU's, and near dedicated GPU level graphics. We are past the days of intel being the go to when it comes to efficiency / battery life when the OEM's tune the power profiles correctly, and would really like to see some of these small form factor laptops reflect that.
You can try the T14 (or T14s) gen 2. You can get them with AMD quad cores and are nearly as thin and light as this model (they are the same chassis as the T490 and T490s respectively). They do have 16:9 instead of 16:10 screens though.
Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14, Asus VivoBook Pro 14X, Asus ROG Flow X13, Asus ZenBook 14 Q408, and Acer Swift X. These are all premium thin/light ultrabooks with AMD Ryzen CPU + dGPU, so you have an abundance of options to choose from.
side by side to the xps 13 its not even a question anymore which most people would pick or be drawn to, the x1s design is at the peak of laptop designs in my honest opinion.
Been waiting for this review all year now. I love that laptop. That’s the best balanced laptop on the market. Super thin and light, and pretty powerful. Don’t forget how sturdy and solid the Thinkpads are, let alone the X1 Carbon series. I would love to have one. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I keep seeing reviews of the X1 as a best option for a business ultra book and I’ve wanted this one for a while but I heard the video capabilities aren’t great. I’m on camera all day - I work remotely even before the pandemic. There is little more distracting in a video meeting than poor video quality. What do you think about its camera and mic? [My wife’s 7 yo. Acer has a better camera and mic than the Lenovo Yoga she got last year and wondering about the X1.] Thanks for any additional info!
Since you ditched your big mike, the sound is awful. Please wear a cos11d or tram or another good lavelier mike at same spot as you used to wear this big old mike and adjust the volume a bit.
Bezels are too thick and same boring design year after year. Still low-end integrated graphics. Screens still have poor backlight bleed and don't produce a vivid picture unless you pay extra for the OLED which eats a lot of battery. Noisy fans and gets hot as usual. Not a single innovation or redesign in many years.
Clear and concise review, thanks. What is the reason that the review is only posted now, while this is the 2021 model that was announced in January and really available mid year. I look forward to the Gen10 2022 model review (while stil typing this on my Gen 6 with great joy)
Hello, You have reviewed and experimented both Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Gen9 and HP Zbook Firefly 14G8. Which is best one? plz pick a winner in terms of functionality and specs.
Kind of regret not getting this instead of the Extreme on black Friday. Now, the configuration I want for this would cost more than the Extreme config I went with. Oh well, the Extreme is good too, the major problem was just the battery life, fan noise, and extra weight. But then the Carbon has less ports...
Great review as always, Lisa. Here is a strange request: on many of your reviews we have seen a shot of a swimming pool and what appears to be a pool vacuum in the background. Just wondering what brand and type of pool vacuum a Tech head like yourself would recommend. Would also like to see your take on the Echo Show 15, which has enormous promise but incredibly disappointing deliverables.
I just upgraded from the X1 Carbon Gen 6 (16 gb, 2k, i7, and LTE) to X1 Carbon Gen 9 (32 GB , 4k, i7,and 5g)and so far no regrets. Win 11 on the other hand.... I know I can use Win 10 but I want to learn win 11 and this is the easiest way for me to do it.
Happy with Thinkpads since 600x in 1999 I think! I tried others along the way but always returned them as they may be good at this or that but just do not compare overall imho !! :-) trust x1 Line for sure
Thanks for the brilliant review for X1 Gen 9. Your reviews are always enjoyable as your know exactly how much "Geeky" ingredients need to be blended with the required information that a common person can understand. In the conclusion, it would be nice if you let us know more clearly whether you recommend the reviewed product or not for the particular use case. It's there , but subtle:)
Review just in time. I was just looking at this yesterday deciding between this or the X1 Nano. I saw your Nano review just last night, and now you got this one. It was a let down about your comments about the Nano's Xe graphics. The way I am understanding you, this one does not have the downclocked Xe? Also, would you get this over the Nano, if portability is important? The Nano is tempting me despote its limitations, but if the weight and size isn;t that much different, I'll go with this (because i still care about some GPU power for basic photo editing). Thanks!
My biggest complaint is lack of sd card, the system is capable enough to handle some light creative task like photoshop, lightroom and the lack of port really hurts the experience Another major upgrade (maybe for some niche market), Thunderbolt 4 controller in 11th gen Intel CPU is now integrated in CPU itself, so no more bandwidth battling in southbridge with other things anymore, which means you can enjoy a dramaticly improved eGPU performance for better gaming and computing
How is 12th gen intel battery life, really? It seems like they've started making them to purposely pass battery life benchmarks. My i7 X1 Extreme g4 gets 2 hours of battery if I'm doing anything. If I leave it idle, it shows it can get about 5 hours. It's not really feasible for coding unless I'm next to an outlet with my giant power brick. Btw I clearly don't recommend the X1 Extreme, despite how pretty the 4k screen is.

I am really happy to see 16x10 becoming more and more common on notebooks. It really is a better aspect ratio for mobile displays than 16x9.
I'm so glad, I was getting exasperated with the endless stream of widescreen notebooks that feel like you're looking out of a tank window.
