    I'm about to install a similar cooler (just a little smaller - #13750) on my 64 Fairlane (429/C6), and came across your video while seeing what everyone else did. Thanks for posting it. I'm replacing a 25-30-year-old tube/fin cooler that has a small leak in one of the tubes and a sketchy fluid line setup. A couple of points (more for anyone else that might view this video):
    1) Using AN fittings/hose isn't a matter of appearance. Every fitting is a potential point of failure/leaks, and properly built AN lines mitigates that possibility. Yes, it's more expensive, but it's a better strategy.
    2) I'm going to use rivnuts to attach the cooler to the floor pan. I really don't want to go through the hassle of taking the back seat out of the car, and I don't have any welding equipment/skill.
    3) I've read that best practice is to put the temperature switch as close to the the trans as possible. I'm feeling like it might be a good idea to put it on the cooler like you did, and since Derale seems to think it's okay.
    4) I'm going to add an override switch (like you mentioned), with an illuminated toggle, and wire the thermostatic switch to the led on the switch, so I'll know when the cooling fan comes on. I don't have a temp gauge yet, but plan to put one in the car at some future date.
    5) I'm going to use tubing from the cooler to a point just shy of where the fittings are on the trans. This will prevent me from having to spend a butt load of money every time I have to replace the rubber lines (due to needing less of it).

    Lol you might finish that car, you might never have to get under it again like that, you might get a lift, you might get a awesome shop to do it all in but buddy you are going to be doing that stuff your whole life. Because you’re good at it lol. Love your stuff man.

    I know what you mean about putting these cars in the air to work on them. My Dad (75) and me (270 pounds) swapped the transmission in his 64 a few Sundays ago. Transmissions are tall and heavy when working under these. Keep up the good work.

    When I was 16 (58 years ago) I owned a '53 Oldsmobile. At that tender age I wasn't all that mechanically savvy and didn't realize my car had an air cooled transmission. I took the car to the drag races one time and it ran like a scared rabbit, even the announcer in the tower apparently said, look at that green Olds go. I was having so much fun I was running in the time trials up to just befor the elimination races. Needles to say, the tranny got hot and in my first elimination race the car ran like a 4 cylrnder Cadillac.. I lost miserably and at the time I had no idea why. I know I could have won easily if I had let it cool down. :(

    I’m glad to hear about that company. Sounds like they have some products I could use on my truck. Cleaning up by my dads barn I found some old stainless dual exhaust from a derby truck. I’m probably going to put that on my truck. My exhaust being factory is pretty junk. It’s Swiss cheese by the axle. And I’m certain the same is for the front. And I’m probably going to be able to keep the spare tire mount.

    I think that is the exact same kit I have for my F100 with AOD trans. The Trans builder had advised me to run from pressure side to cooler then to rad. and then back to trans. I did not know if you were aware up this. Looks like you will have yours up and running before me.

    Couldn't you have notched the bracket of the cooler or even put short spacers in to clear the bump on the car, also you could have run a longer piece of 3/8 hard line so less rubber hose to the cooler would have been required.

    • @Thecraig909
      @Thecraig909  2 роки тому +2

      No it’s high enough it’s not an issue and it pulls air from the sides not the top and bottom. The exhaust will also have a heatsheild on it keeping unwanted head away

  • @merc6

    I would almost be concerned with fluid dynamics and what I mean by that is you are going from a smaller diameter to a larger diameter back to a smaller diameter hose. There is is friction lose in flow, pressure lose when going from small to large, and then volume lose when going back to small. It's not a hydraulic system, it's just a fluid transfer system.

    I think you did good job of mounting it but picked a very bad spot, it will have very poor airflow get full of road grime, and if it rains it could short. I can understand why you did not want to mount it in front of the radiator but you could have mounted it behind the grill just off to one side.
