The song is not in praise of the devil, the song is actually sending a very Christian message, which is “don’t be like this man, hiding behind his faith to justify his own selfish prideful ambitions and lust for power“. Frolo is basically an example of the type of hypocrite that Jesus castigates in the gospels, the kind, who make an outward show of righteousness and piety, while they are corrupt and rotten within, like a beautifully painted tomb that is nevertheless full of the bones of the dead. The song begins with Frolo praying to the Virgin Mary and asking for her guidance and assistance. But immediately, the first words out of his mouth are a type of humble brag about how righteous he is, and how he is so much better than the “common, vulgar, week, licentious crowd.” This is the kind of prayer that a Pharisee would recite. He then proceeds to give up all responsibility for his own shortcomings, and blame his infatuation and lustful obsession with Esmeralda, completely on some kind of witchcraft or devilry. But his pride will not allow him to admit it. The next day, he goes on a rampage, burning down parts of Paris to track down Esmeralda, with the intention of supposedly bringing her to justice. He uses the excuse, the cover of enforcing the law, and doing the work of God to lie to himself, and the people of Paris . In reality, he only wants to have Esmeralda for his own. And if he can’t have her, then she will die, because no one else can have her. He wants to kill her, because if she won’t be with him, then she will only be a temptation to him.
