I believe the dueling lead guitars are Stills and Young. It's reminiscent of some of their playing on Buffalo Springfield but playing on a David Crosby composition. Generally, Crosby and Nash played acoustic guitar. Great song and album!
You can spot Neil Young’s guitar work a mile away when you hear it! It’s so uniquely him. And these lyrics have always reminded me of David Crosby just writing a free flowing thought on paper for five minutes and then putting it to music. Just a jam between him and his friends. I love this entire album, and my sister and I used to listen to it all the time back in the day. You can’t go wrong with this band. Their harmonies are exquisite, and they are all such brilliant writers as well.

@@brendahhstiles9992 I think that’s why it seems to me just like free flowing thoughts put down on paper. He didn’t try to make it lyrically perfect. I think it was his thoughts of that moment in time, they jammed out to it, and it became a great song!
I adopted this song back in’71 when I lived on a military base and had shoulder length hair, which annoyed some of the uniformed men. Brought back many good memories.
This reminds me that Graham Nash had just left The Hollies prior to joining up with Crosby & Stills. I read somewhere that he left them because they wouldn't record Marrakesh Express, which ended up on the first CSN album in 1969, and a billboard charter. Great great song, and here's a plea for you to make it your next CSN listen ❤

Crosby is singing, with Stills on guitar in one ear and Young on guitar in the other. There's an extended live version where they jam in the middle that you ought to hear.
Thanks, Jay for playing this song. I forgot all about it. Does that bring back memories? As I would say back then, it was outside. I wish you Peace & Love.
I haven’t heard this song in a couple decades and I have the album! I loved hearing David Crosbys vocals in this again. He sounded amazing. Not to mention the awesome guitar work in this song. Thanks for this one, Jay!
This is a great song with very nice guitar work and a kind of bluesy vibe. Another great song on the same topic is "I Won't Cut My Hair," by D.A.D. (Disneyland After Dark), and a third is "Hair," by The Cowsills, who I recall were guests on your show in the past.💇
This album was played both sides over and over again, thank you for taking me down memory lane. And this is MY favorite song! I wish you all the best in 2025, music soothes the soul keep listening, I will watch for your next feed!
There’s a reason why CSN&Y only needed to use their last names as a band name. Each of them were master musicians at the absolute top of their game. No leaders, no followers, just a massive creative energy that we are still fortunate to enjoy. This was one of their best. ✌️
One thing you need to understand is that, in this time, men having long hair was being very rebellious. I know every time I came home my father would say, "About time you got a haircut." Letting your freak flag fly refers to letting your long hair fly free. That is David Crosby on vocals and the incomparable Neil Young doing the guitar work.
If even mentioned some guy I thought I was cute my dad would ask me, "Don't you know any boy with a 'Christian haircut?" He just couldn't understand my attraction to a long haired guy, but then again, it was the late 60s early 70s.
Definitely the incomparable Neil Young and the equally incomparable Stephen Stills also on lead guitar. Dueling guitars as they did so much in Buffalo Springfield and then more in CSN&Y.
Just a little thing a lot of people miss, before the music starts, you can hear David Crosby say, 'I will now proceed to untangle the entire area' he had a great sense of humour! Can I suggest another brilliant David Crosby song, 'Delta' it's beautiful, David Crosby, RIP 🌠
Glad this put you at ease. "Almost Cut My Hair" was written and sung by David Crosby. Tomorrow is Stephen Stills' 80th birthday. In addition to Buffalo Springfield and CSN/CSNY, Stills was also part of Manassas. In honor of Stills' birthday, you could react to Manassas' "It Doesn't Matter".
@aarongoldstein7614 About Stephen Stills: I knew he was in Manassas; I have an old mid 1960s song "Sit Down I Think I Love You" by The Mojo Men. Song writing credit is one "Steve Stills." I wonder if it was by Stephen?
If I remember correctly, this was around or after the time of the Kent State shootings. Making all the more powerful the line "I feel like I owe it to someone". The 60s counterculture in one great song.
Jay, I knew you would love this song, there was no question about it. I’m pretty sure you were actually born around 1955 and your delivery date got messed up. You would have absolutely loved to have heard this song on vinyl when it was first released. It was amazing. Happy days to you Brother!
David Crosby wrote and sings this song. David said that when he was in prison he played with a band there. He liked to play this song to drive the warden crazy.
David Crosby's MASTERPIECE. Now you know why I've been *screaming* for this for *two years* . (Y'all have been VERY good to me for Christmas, Jay. We got a James Young Styx tune [Dennis is still my fave, but James deserves his propers], we got PRE-Silver Bullet Bob Seger, and now this. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.) Such beauty and power and PASSION from Cros here. "Not giving in an inch to fear." A-MEN, David. Holding on to your principles under pressure is one of the most heroic acts possible. Even if it's as small as not cutting your hair. Two other lyrics of note: "Must be because I had the flu for Christmas" That was the 1968=1969 Asian (or Hong Kong) Flu, the biggest pandemic we had between the original Spanish Flu of 1918-1920 and COVID-19. The flu that scared the young Stephen King so badly that it feels as though half of his early short stories (published in Gallery magazine, hence the collection being called "Night Gallery") were about it. And I'm ashamed to admit it, but for over a decade I thought "looking in my mirror and seeing a police car" was about David tripping out while looking in his mirror at home…when it was really about David driving around and seeing the police in his rear-view and hoping they wouldn't stop him, since he had drgs in the car. As for more CSNY, how about David doing "Guennevere" (such a story for that song) or Graham Nash doing "Prison Song" (the CSNY album fell apart when Neil bailed and so its easier to find the version from Graham's solo record, but we have the rehearsal tape and CSNY played it live, too) or his "Chicago" (which was a solo song at first, but the group adopted it and recorded it, as they did with Neil's "Ohio"), or you can check out Stephen and Neil together in Buffalo Springfield, be it "Bluebird" (Stills) or "Mr. Soul" (Young)? And if I really want to push my luck, let's hit some classic requests: Fleetwood Mac from 1972-1974 (yes, before Stevie…don't worry, you can always go back) whether it's Bob Welch doing "Hypnotized" or "The City" or "Good Things Come to Those Who Wait" or Christine McVie's "Homeward Bound" or "Prove Your Love". So glad this one took some of the pressure off you. CSN&Y’s music, in all their combinations, has stood the test of time and sound just as great today as it ever did. Wishing you all the best in 2025.
Neil Young wrote “Ohio” after the Kent State shootings. I had family on campus that day. I am a Kent State Alumni, just 20 years after the tragic time. I always was able to teach my students about Vietnam through protest songs. Fortunate Son, Ohio, this song, etc… they loved it & it made a huge impact on them far beyond any test they had to take.
MY FAVORITE CROSBY, STILLS ,NASH AND YOUNG ALBUM!! THE WHOLE ALBUM IS AMAZING SONGS, "OUR HOUSE" "CARRY ON" "TEACH YOUR CHILDREN" I LOVE BLUESY! BEAUTIFUL REACTION JAY!! THANK YOU! 😊💓🔥🤘✌️MY TEENAGE YEARS!!
Glad this song worked so well for you and will be added to your playlist. It worked for me back when. But I was young and single and seemed to have the time to indulge. I’d play at LEAST one whole side of this album. Music can be as helpful as meditation I think.
My favorite, there is a great live version, check it out Jay. Happy new year Jay and a big hug to you and Amber. Let this new year, also be a new beginning for you both. I will support both of you in your journey.❤
Kind of a blues riff. I used to have this album. I have no idea where it went. A real good blues song by a very underrated guitar player, Alvin Lee, is "Bluest Blues." About 7 minutes long. The late George Harrison plays slide electric guitar on the first solo.
People will find a long version of this song that runs for 8:53 min. with a lengthy guitar outro. David Crosby and Phil Collins also wrote and sing on a super good song titled "Hero" with David singing lead and Phil doing the background vocals.
Great song! Great reaction! I’ve never heard this one before Keep em coming Jay. I also have a “mellow” play list that I listen to in my hammock by our man made waterfall. My happy place at home for sure.
Great song, amazing group. I agree, listening to music is like meditation for me, it has the power to transport and free you if you just close your eyes, open your ears and let it take you
From one of the greatest albums of all time , Deja Vu! I bought this album in 1970, this is the hippie anthem that I grew my hair long to !I miss David Crosby ! Best wishes Jay for a great 2025!!❤
Listen again Jeremy… closely please. It’s David Crosby on lead vocals, with Neil Young & Steven Stills on “dueling” guitars… there’s very very little vocal contribution by Young, Stills, or Nash.
This is the quintessential protest song of the time, long hair quite often worn by people who did drugs and/or were likely to protest the war in Vietnam. Things that were frowned upon and actively persecuted by the establishment/government at the time. It took me many years long after I stopped doing drugs to not be paranoid when I saw a police car in my rear view mirror!
This might be my favorite CSN song, depending on my mood. I like to put this one on when I'm frustrated and annoyed. David Crosby had reason to be paranoid. He spent some time in a Texas prison.
I think my favorite of CSN&Y is Ohio. If you haven't already reacted to that one, highly recommend it. Neil Young wrote it in reaction to the Kent State shooting in 1970. It still hits hard! Maybe because I live in Ohio now and have relatives in that area. Regardless it's worth a listen! ❤❤❤
@@debibailey2968 I was raised in Cleveland and visited my cousin at Kent State two years before this event. It didn’t make any sense to me then and it definitely still doesn’t make any sense how everything got so out of hand. But it is a perfect song to represent that moment in time

Great song from their greatest album, Deja Vu. Every song a killer experience.
Crosby's voice is so textured and enjoyable.
Blessings ❤
Yeah.. Awesome memories. For sure!!!
I am a child of the 60's. What a great time to grow up. The music❤
Great song!!! Hope you are doing well!!!
Love David Crosby's voice.
Great Stills Young guitar duel!
Glad this song worked so well for you and will be added to your playlist. It worked for me back when. But I was young and single and seemed to have the time to indulge. I’d play at LEAST one whole side of this album. Music can be as helpful as meditation I think.
Love it! I saw them in concert in1982. It was amazing!!! Great reaction!
My favorite, there is a great live version, check it out Jay. Happy new year Jay and a big hug to you and Amber. Let this new year, also be a new beginning for you both. I will support both of you in your journey.❤
The live versions of this tune are powerful, with extended guitar breaks.
Uncle Neil always slams live!
Awesome, keep em coming Jay!
Kind of a blues riff. I used to have this album. I have no idea where it went. A real good blues song by a very underrated guitar player, Alvin Lee, is "Bluest Blues." About 7 minutes long. The late George Harrison plays slide electric guitar on the first solo.
Here's another Freak Flag song:
"Tribe" | GRUNTRUCK
"...I just wanna fly my freak flag..."
And "Freak Flag" by Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS)
“MARAKESH EXPRESS”
Is another great one by C.S.N.!! Different, bouncy sound!(sorry not too good at describing)
Teach Your Children, it’s on the same album
Love that song.
@@paulamelnyk986 Me too!
I think you’d enjoy “Cowboy Movie” from Crosby’s first solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name. A really great mellow stoner album!
People will find a long version of this song that runs for 8:53 min. with a lengthy guitar outro. David Crosby and Phil Collins also wrote and sing on a super good song titled "Hero" with David
singing lead and Phil doing the background vocals.
I used to listen to this album a lot and I forgot how good it is! It’s been about 20 years since I last listened and I have to get back to it now!
Great song! Great reaction! I’ve never heard this one before Keep em coming Jay.
I also have a “mellow” play list that I listen to in my hammock by our man made waterfall. My happy place at home for sure.
One of greatest albums of all time. Not a bad song or filler!
Great song, amazing group. I agree, listening to music is like meditation for me, it has the power to transport and free you if you just close your eyes, open your ears and let it take you
Neil and Steven all over those guitar parts.
Haven't heard this before. Thanks for the introduction ✌️
David Crosby wrote and sang lead on this song in the recording you played today.
No Tears Left…the title of one of CSNY’s most rocking songs. You’ll love it!
We had it so good back then there is no music as good as this anymore!
From one of the greatest albums of all time , Deja Vu! I bought this album in 1970, this is the hippie anthem that I grew my hair long to !I miss David Crosby ! Best wishes Jay for a great 2025!!❤
Jay, that is Mr. Neil Young on vocals and lead guitar. One of my absolute favorite musicians.❤
J, I’m so glad your doing this song. I absolutely love🤍it. It’s such a feel great song for me. 😊 The guitar is so sick. CSN JUST ROCKS !! 🤘🏼killer !!
As a high school student from 70 to 74 this was our anthem. Yes we all had ponytails and got a lot of abuse for it.
This might be my favorite CSN song, depending on my mood. I like to put this one on when I'm frustrated and annoyed. David Crosby had reason to be paranoid. He spent some time in a Texas prison.
Fantastic reaction and one of the epic 70s albums. DeJaVu has one banger after another. No filler whatsoever!
Love you too, Bro. Peace out.
But it is a perfect song to represent that moment in time
I was just laughing about this song the other day. I remember back in the day how we thought it was such a big deal to grow long hair. We showed what nonconformists we were by looking like every other guy on campus. Great guitar work!
So much music puts me into a good vibe. I enjoyed today's reaction!
✌️❤️👍🎶🎶🎶
My favourite track by CSNY.
Crosby's voice is perfection and of course great guitar work by Young /Stills etc.
Just looking in Rob. Thank you Liked
Awesome song. Hope everything is good with you.
"Country Girl" on this album (It's by Neil Young) - In fact the whole album is great
Nice! Nice section of songs lately. Cheers!
