The days of using cut plug herring for salmon are long behind me. I've found artificial lures that can be stuffed with bait perform as well as baits on most occasions. For years I've been using Brad's Killer Fishing Gear Super Baits and Cutplugs with great success for King and Coho Salmon, Kokanee, and Rainbow Trout on lakes, the Columbia River, Puget Sound, an the ocean. This year Yakima Bait Company came out with their "Spinfish" lure which at first seems like something of a knockoff but upon closer inspection shows marked differences and improvements over its competitor. Both lures are proven fish killers for me and each has its own set of strength of weaknesses.

Thanks for watching!
These are my new absolute favorite for coho and chinook.Fished almost all day on the coos using brads as well as other lures behind 360s switched to a pink spinfish and it was my first time fishing it and caught 3 coho in under an hour.Since it has been my go to and always produces fish.
For the cut plugs I use the egg loop knot and put the line threw the rubber band at the loop part behind eye of hook. Wish I could post a picture. Used it for years catching kings and kokanee and still do. Once rubber band dries out, (takes a long time), then I replace it.
I’m going to try this! Awesome idea.
On the Yakima bait, use a water pik , if you have one, to clean them out. It gets them a lot cleaner and works a lot faster.
If you don't don't like carrying rubber bands, carry surgical tubing of the appropiate diameter for your cut plug and cut off a small slice. It lasts way longer than a rubber band and you don't have to look for little rubber bands in with your other tackle.
I am using surgical tubing. It still fails
Hahaha, brads hat and yakima bait shirt, so clever. What size big river hooks you use? I tried 3/0 wide gaps on the mini’s this year and had a great hook to land ratio!! Another great video, thanks much Tyler!!!
Caught my first Salmon on a Brads up at wells 13.5 pounds!
Love the new spinfish. Only issue I have had with them is the paint chipping off easily.
That's not good to hear since I just bought over a $100.00 worth of them!!
I've killed lots of big chinook on the Kokanee cut plugs especially in the middle of the day
I think the fact the super bait leaks out tuna is a good thing
Yup might help trigger a bite
I started carrying a Nalgene container with lemon Joy and water in it, pop the lure in it when changing to a different one. Almost zero cleanup when you get home.
👍 good idea
Another great video whats your thoughts on pro cure or whats your go to scents?
I use Pro cure a lot. My favorite scent of theirs for Kings is garlic bloody tuna oil.
@@spiltmilt What about saltwater kings?
Do you have a video that explains who you are? What you have done in the past and what you do currently? How did you get into making these videos. Maybe you don't want to make a video like that but I think it would be super interesting. I really like your videos. Both the subjects you chose and quality of your production.
trolled around a brads mini cutplug side by side with a hootchie for coho up in puget sound. couldn't buy a bite on it with tuna in oil + various pro cure scents... looks fishy as hell but the hootchies packed the fish box. i was trolling between 3-4 mph maybe just too fast for this lure, whereas the hootchie could handle it. i want something I can troll in the salt as "bait" but without the annoyance of rigging herring, I was hoping the brad's could fill that spot. will give the lure a few more shots before I retire it.
It is strange as I've experienced something similar in the salt as well. Coho will hit spoons, hoochies, plugs in the salt but not superbaits but I've caught plenty of Coho on superbaits in the Columbia.
@@spiltmilt its weird because the superbait is a just a hollow plug with similar action to other fish catching plugs in my arsenal. i couldn't understand because every time I'd get close to the bottom with it I'd pick up rock fish and flounder, just no salmon at any depth.
I've caught plenty of King Salmon in the salt on Superbaits from Canada to Chile. One of those weird things.
the spin fish is awesome but i can not keep the paint on them one day four fish and the paint was gone not a good sign...
You should give YBC a shout about that
@@spiltmilt I have tried but no reply must be covid related...
I get the paint issue but if they were not getting bit ALL THE TIME, the paint would be perfect day after day. I'll be running Spinfish this year and repainting when needed.
@@thomashoffman4903 What brand of paint are you using on them to do that?? Thanks!
Great discussion.....Thanks!...
What has been you most productive colors with the brad super baits?
Hot tamale and black Jack
The Spinfish finish will peel after a hour in the water. Not happy with the finish. Oil from the tuna gets under the paint where it joins and the paint bubbles. Also and blue runner will loose the blue nose within the hour after trolling!
I've not had that experience even with running a plug 3 days straight and catching numerous fish on it. I would be angry if it did though
Caught my first Spinfish King on the Nestucca on a two/single hook set up last week. Today, got a hard takedown on the Spinfish but with a treble. It did not stick. I had a couple take downs last week with the Spinfish and 2 hook setup (5/0 hooks) that also did not stick. Is this normal to miss fish takes with the Spinfish?
I clean the Spinfish inside with Q Tips and dish soap. A small screwdriver gets the tuna out.
Try using smaller hooks when fish are biting light , can’t go wrong with 3/0 for kings /coho
Would you say the super cutplugs and spinfishers work better in rivers than in the ocean, or does it not matter?
Doesn't matter
What size Gamakatsu hooks do you use?
2/0 front hook, 1/0 rear hook (If you prefer larger hooks step up 1 size)
@@spiltmilt Thank You!
@@spiltmilt What size hooks to you use on the 2.5 and 2.0 spinfish?
what size do you recommend for salmon using the Spinfish in the NW rivers?
I like the 3.0 for springers and 4.0 for summers/fall Kings.
I’m all for cut plugs if you go with the spin fish be prepared to get them repainted. Really low quality paint
Nice
What's the best coho b10 color spinfish and size thx
Silver pink or black scale are solid bets
