I cant believe how close it sounds to the original. He even managed to get surviving members of the funk brothers who played on the original version of heatwave. Phil once stated in a magazine that he wanted the songs on going back to sound like the originals. They really do. He never leaves any stone unturned at all. Holland-Dozier-Holland must be really proud of this fine musician.
The only original member of the Funk Brothers that played on the original 1963 recording is Eddie Willis . Bob Babbitt , one of the greatest bassists of all time replaced the master of all bassists James Jamerson in 1969 . Ray Monette is an original member of Rare Earth that left the group in 2003 , when Joe Messina retired . Since this recording , Bob Babbitt passed away in 2011? due to a brain tumor .
When I remember the original version I cant help but recall the Vietnam war and all the songs that were around then. Although I love this song and Phil does a great rendition I am reminded of all the young men who are fighting again only this time in Afghanistan. God bless them all and keep them safe and bring them home to those that love and cherish them. This generation will recall this song in years to come and they too will be reminded of war.
I'm impressed at how the song doesn't sound "modernized," but yet it still sounds uniquely Phil. He sounds good for his age and all the health problems he's been through recently.
What an icon, and a HUGE influence on my playing!!!! Also a couple of the guitar players looked awful familiar, but being a bass guy I don't remember their names. Might be others.
Some of us are a little older than "Tarzan". Some of us remember Genesis! Love that young people are starting to learn about him, finally. Phil, If you read this stuff, we love you!
Reaching into your soul to happiness! Phil Collins has his place in music history yet he's still modest about his success which makes him even more appealing to me and millions of others. Would be nice to see him on TV again, I know he recorded in London a month or so ago, lets hope it's broadcast along with the album release!
I love how he says "Heatwave" at 2.32, ive seen this boy in concert many times, with and without GENESIS, if hes in your hometown ever again you owe it to yourself to go,all these great musical monsters are fading fast, sad .
💙 Aw brings back such fun to dance and clap to!!!!😃😃 And SUCH FUN watching them have fun!! 😃😁 In a lot of those clips it shows what an awesome guy he is to work with!!🥰🥰🥰😘
Brilhant.
its from the era that true music counted and phil got it in spades. What a version. If you listen to you Cant hurry love you hear the same brilliant translation of a Classic to a Reborn but he just knows how to capture the esence of the origninal than just use the solid foundations of a big band. Man everytime i hear this song my heart just races.
I confess that this bold and fun version of Love Is Like A Heatwave by Phil Collins unexpectedly grew on me some reason after hearing it enough times on corporate radio during my current place of employment. This song also captures the intense passion someone feels for another, now I am completely undecided between if I enjoy this version the best or the Martha and the Vandellas version because both song versions (the versions involving both the Phil Collins and Martha and the Vandellas versions) are fun and zesty to listen to.
Could do with a heatwave right now since the weather in England is gloomy and utterly crap. I love this Man's genuine and sincere voice. The energy of a true artist never dies....brap
Cuando escucho al Sr. collins, me doy cuenta que aún existen músicos serios y que les interesa la música y no solamente ganar dinero. Thanks Mr. Collins is great!!!!
Phil is legend..he's one of the stars you actually admire a lot and would like to talk to and discuss many things.. I personally would like to meet him.
As someone says, he looks like he is really into this, as well as with everyone else playing, singing in this. Like his physical gestures, throughout the song directly taken from Motown singers and other African American performers. Yeah, Martha and the Vandellas did it first, but his rendition is great too.
alot of these old artists come back and are nothing what they used to be and you just think, just let it go for god sake! retire youve had your day. Not with Phil he's sounding better than ever and it's wicked to see him back!
Absolutely fab my favourite childhood memory song by my all time favourite artist, I have spent my life since 16. loving your !music have had the honour of seeing you live and here we are 36 years after I first heard you being absolutely delighted yet again can't imagine a better version even better than the original love you xxx
When can we expect to hear a new Genesis studio album Phil? Nice to see Phil's first single from his new upcoming album not to be a ballad but an upbeat song. Love that horn section and backing vocals. Going back to the roots of Phil's first few albums of his solo career.
Phil... I have my pre-order in for myself and about 30 of my friends. Going Back, is a great inspiration for those of us who grew up with these fantastic arrangements. Let's get it straight for you so called critics who can't find your A** with both hands. This is real music.. Phil could have Karaoked this whole damn project, but he is a perfectionist who wants it right and fresh. The tembre of his voice is perfect for this project and his staff are second to none. wow that was the time i loved Phil Collins, before he got into Musical Industry., he was there with the soulbrothers, i see the original Bass Player Bobby , who came after James died at 00:03

Then we have Joan Osborne version, which sounds even closer to original material.
Strong love for almost all covers, btw
@@jean-poutrelemelomaneavert4085 I'll always love the original but Phil did a fine cover of it.

I hope Mr Collins realises the joy he's brought to so many.
He sounds as good today as he did 20 years ago. His voice hasn't changed one bit!
When I remember the original version I cant help but recall the Vietnam war and all the songs that were around then. Nonsense. How old are you. I'm 74.
Genio🎉
Original 60's Motown bassist Bob BABBITT killin it!
What an icon, and a HUGE influence on my playing!!!! Also a couple of the guitar players looked awful familiar, but being a bass guy I don't remember their names. Might be others.
Fuk yea...!!!
This man has simply give me a lifetime of smiles, just got up and danced around my office:)
an amazing musician. Most critics could not tie his shoes.
Phil Collins is one of the best singers of the whole world.
Who remembers Phil performing "(Love Is Like A) Heatwave" at Roseland Ballroom, NY on June 23, 2010? Check out the official music video! #philcollins

All of your songs touched my heart and I love this song. Going Back is #1 in the album charts in Holland.

Some of us are a little older than "Tarzan". Some of us remember Genesis! Love that young people are starting to learn about him, finally. Phil, If you read this stuff, we love you!
Awwwwww, he looked so happy when he made this video.
Great job covering a classic. No one does it like Phil!!!
Great voice and great music. I love this album.

Loving Phil and ALL the horns!!! ❤❤❤❤

They truly nailed it!!!!! It’s fascinating how perfectly it’s worked out. I’m amazed how they captured the atmosphere, it’s fantastic 👌👌👌
No. It is pathetic
I love how he says "Heatwave" at 2.32, ive seen this boy in concert many times, with and without GENESIS, if hes in your hometown ever again you owe it to yourself to go,all these great musical monsters are fading fast, sad .
A song without time
It's great when you're 15 but you have enough good taste to appreciate Phil Collins music 🙌🏼
Agreed.
Yas Daiana well done! When I was your age I start to listen to good stuff too. Your taste won't change . Thank god !
19 now
This song is one of the best styles for me. Phil Collins was one of the best drummers in the world I love.
The legend is back. Great song and fantastic artist
You're the legend, Phil
He has such a wonderful voice. He did look like he enjoyed himself.
Phil's always loved the Motown sound. I'm sure this new album will be packed with all kinds of great stuff, from an artist who appreciates the genre.
Bravo, dear Phil Collins! Divine! 👏🎼🎶🎸🎹🎷🎺🥁🎙️♥️✨
Thank you for that amazing cover Phil. You always make me feel happy every time I hear it, It doesn't matter how bad was the day.
Regardless of how good or bad his 'come back' is he has left a massive legacy in music and that will never change
what an absolute tune! cant help but put a smile on my face 🔥🔥
Simply a great musician...anyone who knows music loves Phil Collins!
Every song this man touches turns into HIS classic.

I have been listening Phil for 21 years (I'm 24 now), and I still love his music the same way.
Can't wait for the album.

Its great to see the old master back doing his thing,I think Phil Collins is a legend.
Nadie como Phil Collins para transmitir alegria de vivir. Felicidades!!!! ;)
one of the best singers ever

Genesis without Phil Collins? It's not Genesis!
good to hear Phil Collins sing something more upbeat for a change
The most positive singer of all times 💛 ☀️
I heard this yesterday and I just can't get enough. I love Motown, I love Phil, the perfect team. He looks like he is having a great time as well.
marvelous Phil Collins on a Martha Reeves and the Vandellas beautiful song. We are still dancing on the fabulous music.
Took your time Phil, been waiting since you did 'You Can't Hurry Love' for another Motown song from you.
Qué divinoooooooooos!! Cómo se divierten!!!!!!!!! Me encanta!!! Es un GRANDE!
They say legends never die, Phil's new album proves that point wonderfully!
Phil Collins seriously looks like my best friend's dad.
Just heard this today another great rendition of one of my favorite groups, Martha and the Vandellas, by Phil Collins.
Can't say I like this album to much. Gone are the days of Mama.
i grew up during the 70s,always like Phil's voice, you just have to look at him, just drumming on the making of live aid video,to know his talents.
i don't normally like listening to jazz stuff but i actually like this song. Love Phil
Could do with a heatwave right now since the weather in England is gloomy and utterly crap. I love this Man's genuine and sincere voice. The energy of a true artist never dies....brap

Thanks Mr. Collins is great!!!!
Best song from GB album, he rule with this!
Just another GREAT Holland & Dozier creation.
Phil sent Bob Babbitt a beautiful email asking him to play on his Going Back album. He wanted as much of the original Motown sound as possible.
It got to 34 degrees here
Phil is legend..he's one of the stars you actually admire a lot and would like to talk to and discuss many things.. I personally would like to meet him.
As someone says, he looks like he is really into this, as well as with everyone else playing, singing in this. Like his physical gestures,
throughout the song directly taken from Motown singers and other African American performers. Yeah,
Martha and the Vandellas did it first, but his rendition is great too.
Ah what a legend Phil is, hes still go that 'invisible 'touch and can always 'turn it on again' when he wants to, 'that's all' I wish say :P
Excellent rendition of "Heathwave" and a triubute to Motown music by the Great British singer Phil Collins.
alot of these old artists come back and are nothing what they used to be and you just think, just let it go for god sake! retire youve had your day.
Not with Phil he's sounding better than ever and it's wicked to see him back!
Give this man his flowers now. Legend!!!

gachetbietdi - US?? He's from England!

When can we expect to hear a new Genesis studio album Phil? Nice to see Phil's first single from his new upcoming album not to be a ballad but an upbeat song. Love that horn section and backing vocals. Going back to the roots of Phil's first few albums of his solo career.

Thank God for the funk Brothers 🙏
I'm all for remembering classic tracks, but do we really need a new version when the original was pretty much perfect?
Yeah! Bob's sounding great on this. Great Motown sound.
The man I'm trying to be exactly like especially with his awesome drumming
Best song in new milenium
Brilliant thank you always to #PhilCollins for his music .
Give this man the nobel prize of music
