Can't think why Portandia has to be 'defended.' It's simply good natured - and very accurate - satire. Then again, the passive aggressive denizens do get ass sore pretty quickly......but they'll never really tell you this.
"gentle to the point of being stifling" Stifling is right! The whole pnw is like that I'd rather people be real. You make faster and deeper friendships that way. And you feel much freer.
I think this show has made Portland seem a completely awesome place to live and work in. It put the place on the map, made people take notice of what it is and where it is. I'm from Scotland and I really want to go hang out there now thanks to this show. What they take the mickey out of on the show actually makes it attractive to visit.
PompiTube just don’t let the tweakers and heroin junkies steal your shit and squat in your house. Portland had a meth and heroin epidemic 15 years before the rest of America and its the cheapest place to be a homeless junky.. have fun.
There is a difference between laughing at someone and laughing with them. I never got the impression that the writers of Portlandia were trying to be mean. Cities like Portland have quirky people who would laugh right along with this, as long as they don't take themselves so seriously. BTW, my free range eggs have a card with the chicken who laid them inside.
As Fred and Carrie put it one time...Portland has a group for everyone there making the city as a whole inclusive, but each of those groups is very exclusive...
Portland - PLEASANTVILLE? As an Australian I am now interested in Portland. As Oscar Wilde said "There's only one thing worse than being talked about & that's not being talked about".
Seriously. I lived there for 11 1/2 long years. And just the over-dramatization of everything...everything is a big deal and the more over the top you are, the cooler you are. It used to be that people could just do their thing there-it was quirky and accepting. In the meanwhile, it’s a game to see who can be weirder...more extreme.
I'm not a Portland resident (I'm Canadian - in a way Vancouver is our Portland) - But I am an aging former homeless crust punk - and I always found the segments about the crust punks fucking hilarious. "These have to hang - You want a lot of this" [dangles random, patch-covered utility belts and shit] "What are they for?" "Just so you can hear it" Fucking brilliant lol
Notice how she never said that it's meant to be more of a homage to the delightfully quirky people of Portland, as many reviewers suggest, rather than straight up parody. Make no mistake, Portlandia is parody and a hilariously scathing parody at that. And it's not just Portland, of course, where people this flaky, and often phony, exist in large numbers. It's increasingly all over the world. That's why so many people love it. It's a show that's been reading our mail!
@IntrepidTit I totally agree. Portlandia, however, really takes a no-holds-barred approach to making fun of Portlandians...with side-splitting results!
I was taken back by it being a sketch comedy show rather than a sitcom when my best friend recommended I watch it as they are from Portland. Needless to say, I had them translate for me as to what the hell was going on and if any of it was genuinely true. Really interested in checking out Portland now.
I live a tad south of Portland and Its SO funny to see my outta state fiends think I " live " the show.. At least the image of Portland on the show is not some gritty crime drama. When I think of NY NY I think law and order . Does not give you the happy warm feeling to just up and visit. With Portland I think of mix of Serious to very odd people who are mostly "chill". A place to Let loose and have a fun time and very few people really care. Heck I should go in to the city tomorrow in my Halo Armor just for Grins and Grab me some VooDoo and a crisp Micro Brew.
+Megavolt Services LLC "Heck I should go in to the city tomorrow in my Halo Armor just for Grins and Grab me some VooDoo and a crisp Micro Brew", say you. Goodness that sounds soooo trite and portlandian. Like a doughnut with bacon on it and a beer makes for a relevant city. And people are not "odd" in Portland, a huge misconception They certainly 'try' to be which is akin to cultivating eccentricity - staggeringly contrived. Truly odd people have no idea they are odd, and Portland has a lot of very very white people desperately trying to be otherwise... And if you thing NY NY is no more than a silly TV show, it is strongly recommended you visit.
IntrepidShitt Right, princess From you - replying to me unsolicited from a post over half a decade old. Bless you for being so late to the party. Any chance you can explain how and where I was triggered:) Good luck! Hee! Hee!
I had to spend 3 weeks in Portland for work and from what I observed there is that the show is pretty accurate. Born and raised Bostonian and often told that I have the thickest accent of other Bostonians they met and I don’t offended when people make fun of us. I actually find the SNL skits with Casey Affleck at Dunkin Donuts and Bill Burr trying Sam Adams some of the funniest skits they did…people need to lighten up!
Housing in Portland is retarded. Gone California in prices yet they still don’t have an abundance of decent jobs. Only a moron would brag about minimum wage meaning that’s what you strive for? Way to aim high on them goals..
When I move to Portland from New York, I was pretty struck by the relative lack of humor among the more liberal residents. Back east, they are the the funniest people around, and have no problem poking fun at themselves. So I really welcome Portlandia because it is like a New Yorker telling Portlanders that they need to not take themselves so seriously. Sometime over the past 10 years, Bill Maher took to making the left the main focus of his comedy because the potential there was too hard not to pass up. Portlandia could have inspired him. But in each case, the hipsters will tell you you can only do this for so long, which is why some have said "it's not cool to love Portlandia anymore". And Bill is hated by both the right AND the left now. Yeah, but we Portlanders are better on the for having been given a reality check on our lifestyle by Portlandia. Thats what comedians sometimes do best.
Now when I watch Portlandia it makes me miss my years living in the PNW. Yes, there is a stupidity and silliness to the people (myself included) but it comes from heart, education and prioritizing the right things.
It's funny as a homegrown portlander it's not that I was ever offended by the show. I just found it boring and irrelevant. But when she said portlanders are afraid of confrontation that's BS , sadly hard drugs have made people violent and unpredictable.
I'm not sure why he should be offended. No untruths here. I moved to Oregon 10/96 and moved from Oregon 11/14. So I have yet to see or hear of anything in the series that was in error.
Side Effects People live there because they want, or have to. A diehard conservative may look at the program, and ask okay, so what's the issue? What's the problem? I lived nearby Portland from 10/96 to 11/14 and saw an atmosphere and lifestyle myself. Years ago, when I was considerably younger, there was a popular program on in the '70's called, All in The Family. The lead character being Archie Bunker. He couldn't understand why the live audience was laughing at his beliefs and ideals. As they made, perfect, logical sense to him.
I'm not sure what you're getting at, but I just realized I think your original comment was about the guy in the beginning? Because he was joking. I thought you were asking why someone in general would be offended by the show!
The thing is, there's a demographic nationwide that is in love with "being offended". The rank and file portlander is more mellow than the national average and would like the comedy of Portlandia. But of course many hard core feminists and vegan-nazis will be offended.
2013 were simpler times. These days the news coming out of Portland doesn't make it seem so nice what with the crazy activists and altright mobs making a shit show every week.
I'm offended because the show us never as funny as it could be. The feminist bookstore ladies are great, the bed and breakfast segments are great, but most of it never quite hits the mark.
The simultaneous desire to be offended at all times and to be angry about it as they also demand recognition and congratulations for their willful ignorance..seems like something that is becoming part of America its self.
I was born in Portland, and have lived here for over 50 years now, and I think Portlandia is awesome.

You can go now. Just bring a tent and some cans of tuna. You can stay as long as you want by the highway. They'll give you stuff to help out.
She's so charming! I love her!
Oh I remember watching this interview .... back in the 90s!
Maybe this show has made many people want to move here. The value of my home is skyrocking. Thank you Portlandia =)
River Morrison weird...it did the exact opposite for me.
What he said is backed with statistics.

Is the idea of Chaz still alive in Portland
Portlandia reminds me of reno911,
Portland has changed since this interview, buildings going up everywhere minimum wage is 11$
Yeah but some things need to come before minimum wage, like a semicolon.
Or an oxford comma...
Housing in Portland is retarded. Gone California in prices yet they still don’t have an abundance of decent jobs. Only a moron would brag about minimum wage meaning that’s what you strive for? Way to aim high on them goals..
I think this is funny I live in Salem Oregon but this show literally is just like Portland
It's so very sad that Portland has become so angry.
Getting offended by Portlandia is the most Portlandish attitude of all.
Was the host august clementine from parks and Rec!?

Portlandia brilliantly roasts the libral bubble with knowledge, only an insider could bring to the table.

It’s not roasting if people in Portland literally love this show. It’s satire. At least we can laugh at ourselves, unlike conservatards.
I dont think I've ever seen Colin McEnroe despite hearing him for years. Weird
Why is Carrie back in the 70's?

Portlandia would've worked in Santa Fe too. Many gonzo artsy types there.
Having never been to Portland nor knowing anything about it, I am incensed by the stereotypical portrayal of Portlandians.
A few days there will make you realize it's a stereotype but a pretty accurate one.
It’s called “Comedy”.
