@Eloise Hall I was thinkin Lord let's not have a (u ain't the daddy with his father lookin nothin like him)🙊Sorry Kemau...No disrespect bro its the times were livin in)lol!
This is something that everyone should do. I was told I have NA but I took the test and have none at all. Love how he said he wouldn’t show his daughter because the Internet is horrible, yes trolls are the worst. I did Ancestry first and then MyHeritage and mostly got similar results, the latter has a more specific breakdown. My test came out to be African (mostly Nigerian) European (Scandinavian, Greek, Finnish, and Irish), and Asian (East Asia somewhere in the area of Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines).
Hi. Just because no NA (or anything in particular) came up, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have forefathers who are not expressed in your particular DNA since each time (to make it very simple) you only inherit 50% of DNA from one parent and 50% from the other, so you can imagine that that process over several generations, especially if people are intermarrying in a cultural “melting pot” type environment, all kinds of DNA gets left behind. It doesn’t mean that the people in the past don’t exist as distant family, they just don’t exist in your specific DNA profile.
I was wondering why Kamau would do the research based on his DNA when both of his parents are still living. His parents' DNA would give him SO much more information than his own DNA. Glad to see in the preview that the parents are testing.
Doretta Irwin he might of got them tested afterwards, I got myself tested and asked my dad to and he is very skeptical so he wants to wait until I get my results back to see if he wants to.
Got mine tested first since I was the curious one. Lol!😁 If I would have waited on my Mama I would have been waiting for awhile. She was very stubborn about the whole thing. Didn't see the purpose and felt like we would still be called what society wanted to call us. (That's putting it lightly what she really said. 😂😜) It took me about a year to convince her.🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ So now hers, mine, my youngest son, and my Mom's oldest brother (85 years old & his revealed more) have all been done. So it is definitely worth it in the end.
Kamau that is a Kenyan name.. to be precise among the biggest tribes here called Kikuyu. They (we) are generally found in the Kenyan Highlands I hope you discovered more about us in the recent episodes.
My Mom thought she was part Native American because of how she looks, lighter skinned African American, more wavy hair etc but she came back 96% African and 4% European. That’s more African than some Africans! It’s already lighter Native Africans with wavy hair, people just assume all Africans are one type.

I met a guy in uni in the UK called Kamau, got all excited that there was another Kenyan in my class but he turned out to be of Jamaican ancestry but he thought far back, he might have been Ghanaian. What’s with this name Kamau? It’s so uniquely Kikuyu let alone Kenyan
I’m mixed and my european side I could trace some lines all the way back to the 1400s..the African side, only 3 or 4 generations. Sad how we were stripped of our history. It also weirdly made me super interested in my european side (which I basically ignored all my life) since there was so much there to explore...majority of my makeup is from Europe but the one drop rule really does influence who you identify with. Taking the ancestry test and tracing my family tree really changed the way I saw myself. Some people don’t care much, but it had a profound impact on me I must say.
oh trust me it's not just black people who think they have Native American DNA. White families, every single one of us have a story and they rarely are ever true! What did I find when I got my results back? no Native American, but 97% European.. what about the other 3%? 1% Caucusus (Iraq, Turkey, Syria etc), 1% Southeast Asian and.. 1% African American - I almost fell out of my seat.. I'd always been told we had African American roots on my mothers side and I didn't believe it.. but if you look at a photo of my great grandmother.. there it is.. I'm not sure if I missed something. I understand that his parents were never married to each other. But I am curious to understand how his mother's last name, is also, Bell. I love these ancestry stories. They are always so intriguing to me.
I love Ancestry, I took the dna test a year ago and have been doing a family tree. Would be awesome to have Ancestry's experts to help me out. Would love to find much more, especially being African American.
Every African American is obsessed with having Native American in their ancestry, I feel like they are more interested to find out whether they have native than where do they really come from in Africa 🤷🏾♀️
Blame it on older generations pushing that narrative of having a Native American grandparent or great-grandparent when in reality it was likely a 'swarthy' European ancestor who they mistook for being Native American or were told they were Native American. There are probably more cases than we know of southern Europeans, particularly Italians, being identified as Native Americans in the family and then when the DNA results come back with higher than expected European results (especially if they're broken down into regions) then there are questions about great-great grandpa so and so. I've heard rumors that my family has Blackfoot Indian roots, but I've also heard that we have Greek blood as well somewhere 'down the line' as they say.
Dane Calloway covers this topic. All brown skinned people were not enslaved. Additionally the African American identity has changed multiple times in the U.S. Why change our identity multiple times? What are they hiding about our true identity? I commend those who do the paper trail to trace their roots. I took this DNA test once and received updated results which changed drastically from their original findings. 🤨🤔. I will just say I'm from the lost tribe of Africa
No they're not obsessed. Most African-American, black people (whatever you want to call us), don't really know where they come from. And it's always been the legend that we have Native American ancestry in us. So people can only say what they've been told. So I do think these tests are pretty fascinating as it helps people to better ascertain their lineage. When you add these tests in addition with your family tree and documents it really helps African-Americans / black people to get better understanding of their roots and their family tree.
I have enjoyed watching your ancestry search. Your parents are lovely. Your mother is beautiful. I also have searched for my ancestry to discover some immediate family. Its so sad that there is no one left for me to show what I have found. But I know and that counts to me.

Hellooo my brother. Kamau is a Kikuyu name, the largest Bantu tribe in Kenya. A very business minded, smart, and courageous pple, they're also travellers, you'll find them nearly everywhere in the world. How did you come to be called Kamau? A "Kamau" is a warrior.
Kamau is the name of an Age set given to one of the earliest age set after circumcision and initiation to the warriors class (aanake)....i doubt it means quiet warrior. The aanake (Kikuyu Tribe Warriors), were anything but quiet given they had the Maasai warriors (Morans) to deal with every so often...
Curious if he had cousin matches from the Dockery line. I hit some break walls on one of my lines from the late 1800s to early 1900s due to lack of good record keeping in Texas at that time and some old court house fires that lost records as well. Cousin matches helped me break through some brick walls. The surname on one line was spelled differently on every census and my line ended up keeping the new spelling. Tullos became Tellis. Seems they had a penchant for misspelling names back then in Texas. Luckily I stumbled upon records where Burrough was spelled as Burr which helped break through some brick walls on that line.

"In the end, it doesn't matter." Amen. My grandfather was adopted as an infant. We don't know his birth family. It doesn't really matter. His adopted parents built a new one.
Hey there, Jon, thanks for your comment. AncestryDNA is an autosomal DNA test meaning that it will show you information for both sides of your family. We do not have a Y-DNA test. You can learn more about the kind of test that Ancestry offers here: support.ancestry.com/s/article/About-AncestryDNA. We hope this will help but you're welcome to contact us if you have any other questions! (support.ancestry.com/s/contactsupport/dna)
People. Low DNA percentage points are just as significant as high. Low percents just mean, that particular ethnicity is earlier(further back) in your family tree. That means, typically, your ancestor was full blooded ______. The Ancestry.com site explains how the generation equates to the percentage.
Yeah people need to think of those percentages as EXTREMELY INACCURATE estimates that represent numbers of people in their tree. So if your result = 1/32 Chinese, then there was one Chinese person among the 32 people in your tree several generations back. One in thirty-two of your ancestors were Chinese. But... that 1/32 might actually show up as 0 - 5% depending on the dice you rolled, for several reasons. The percentages are absolutely not accurate representations of your actual ancestry, which you can see for yourself by having a sibling or parent do the test and comparing your results with theirs
wicious The percentages are accurate and typically coincide with a person's family tree. For those with enough living relatives. Mine did and family members. You just don't know enough about genealogy to make your assertion.
APgeneticgenealogylover I understand what you are saying. But that wasn't a mistake. That percentage was accurate as of the prior reference population & algorithm. Their reference population expanded, in which the estimate they use had to change. Your family member still has traces of South Asia but the confidence level the company used, shrunk. Negating the need to put that in your updated DNA ancestry. In other words, it's complicated.
Just watched this episode and it's blowing me mind because my entire family is Dockery and I've never traced my roots but now I'm about to because I'm now more curious then ever because of the last name resemblance
@Tyecia Dockery hello Tyecia! I hope you don't find this intrusive, but I was wondering if you ever followed through on tracing your roots? I am fascinated by genealogy and how it draws people together, and I can't help but be curious if you found a connection with Kamau!
I learned that Black Canadians that came here through the underground railroad or by enlisting as a loyalist has ancestral connections with Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. They were the only people that helped them out. The Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia taught them to build winter shelters and forage for food. Eventually, families became joined.
Freha , they usually have a solid 30% that's west african and the rest of the black blood is scattered arcross the continent ( excluding north africa ). you are learning a thing or two today
north africa in its current incarnation ( ok with the exception of morroco ) is largely of darker middle east ancestry and some berber sprinkled in for good measure. none of it shows in most folk's ancestry .
@@freyjasvansdottir9904 I'm 80%European, and 20% West African, and I'm African-American so not all African-Americans are majority West African. My girlfriend is 79% African, and 21% European and she claims her Italian ancestry versus African-American
Beautiful family Kamau Bell we are very proud of you. by the way you are a perfect combination of both your parents but you resemble more of your beautiful mother
1% and 2% are an 1/8 of native. My grandma is 1/2, my dad is 1/3 and my brothers and I are 1/4. My 23andme shows 1.8% Metis (I only know Metis because of my family, 23andme doesn't have a specific test yet) you may have been able to tick that in the college application after all 👌🏼 Of course I thought I was Scottish and Irish, but hey! I have a new dad and three new brothers out of the deal 👌🏼
It's interesting to see that he was actually Kenyan because I guessed that from his name, considering I have a Kenyan friend whose last name is Kamau. I know that has nothing to do with his dna, but it's an interesting coincidence.
I took the test a few months ago searching for the truth about my family's native American history and found out that my dad wasn't my dad. I am 42 years old and never had a reason to suspect that he wasn't my father. My parents are both deceased do I can't ask them anything and I had no close matches on ancestry so I have no idea. But I do know that I'm not native American and my African heritage is Benin/Togo and southern bantu peoples. Lol

This was the best one so far
He’s right. It’s important that the daughters know their heritage
Live love watching family ancestry,,ancestors are not chosen, but given
This was so much fun for me to watch and for that I truly Thank You. Your Mom is extremely Naturally Beautiful with an Amazing Smile. Thank You for sharing your moment us. 🥰🥰🥰🥰💞💞💞💞🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
"In the end, it doesn't matter." Amen. My grandfather was adopted as an infant. We don't know his birth family. It doesn't really matter. His adopted parents built a new one.
How much or how little it matters rests entirely with the individual.
To find your ancestors can take two different types mtDNA and Y-111 or Y-700. Can find ancestors thst way, too.
I know it's only autosomal. That's my point. Y-111 and Y-700 tests go much further than autosomal ever can. Took both Y-700 and mtDNA tests.
Grateful Shakira
Not all the time. my grandmother received a "
Companies and third party sites like gedmatch can make mistakes based on how their algorithms are set and how adequate their reference data is.
Very cool! I can’t wait to see where this goes.
You have beautiful parents and a lovely family
I learned that Black Canadians that came here through the underground railroad or by enlisting as a loyalist has ancestral connections with Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. They were the only people that helped them out. The Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia taught them to build winter shelters and forage for food. Eventually, families became joined.
Hey Yourself, what great parents you have!!
You are from Ghana come home . brother we need you in your motherland ❤❤❤❤ DNA shows you are Akan tribe.
Kamau is Kenya name from Kikuyu tribe enterprenuer people of Kenya.
Love this remarkable story 🙏🏿👍🏿😎✊🏿
I already knew form the name, my grandfathers name is kamau 🇰🇪🇰🇪
Weird he did'nt mention his majority west african roots
Nature Cure That was the known entity in the equation, pretty much every African American is majority West African.
Nature Cure no not really considering he's not married to a black woman..
We now know where Kamau got his humor.
Beautiful family, oh bless you you.
One kenyan 🇰🇪🇰🇪 in the house 🙋🏾♂️🤩
#hakunamatata we will completely accept you back bro 😅👍🏾👍🏾
Welcome home bro.... Always kenyan🇰🇪
This is incredible ~ thank-you for posting :)
Hi Christianna, thanks for stopping by. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed this video.
I was wondering why a man named Kamau, which is the most common Kenyan kikuyu name was trying to find his DNA but I understand
I really enjoyed this! Off to the next episode.
Kamau name have such an amazing meaning. Off topic Kamau in Cambodian means Black. Kamau is a true Kamau
My 23andme shows 1.8% Metis (I only know Metis because of my family, 23andme doesn't have a specific test yet) you may have been able to tick that in the college application after all 👌🏼
Of course I thought I was Scottish and Irish, but hey! I have a new dad and three new brothers out of the deal 👌🏼
Why does this dude always smile & laugh?
Maybe he is a happy person.
Kamau-From the Agikuyu community-welcome to Kenya
His parents are such beautiful souls🥰
Thank you so much for stopping by - we hope you enjoyed the clip! 🥰🌱
It's interesting to see that he was actually Kenyan because I guessed that from his name, considering I have a Kenyan friend whose last name is Kamau. I know that has nothing to do with his dna, but it's an interesting coincidence.
My Maternal family line also is from Monroe County, AL and last name McCants. Wow. We may be related. Ha!
My great great great grandfather is reason Mccants
I took the test a few months ago searching for the truth about my family's native American history and found out that my dad wasn't my dad. I am 42 years old and never had a reason to suspect that he wasn't my father. My parents are both deceased do I can't ask them anything and I had no close matches on ancestry so I have no idea. But I do know that I'm not native American and my African heritage is Benin/Togo and southern bantu peoples. Lol
Welcome home brother Kamau .
Why and how was Carol actually Lloyd or viceversa? I don't get it.
