    I loved this ❤. When history brings out stories of true love exceeding color barriers. That Carol Dockory had the courage to love Francis openly and raise his 13 children with her, for the length of time he lived. Never owning slaves (which could have been prosperous for him) but truly loved her, speaks volumes about his character. Amazing episode.
    Can't wait to do my ancestry-dna story and see what it reveals 😄

      I'm sure there were more than a few that did honor his children, be they mixed or pure white. And since back then many " marriages" might have been arranged by the parents, it is not too far.a stretch to suspect the mixed children were actually more loved. After all in the case of Feancis and Carol this was the " wife" he chose- not had foisted on Him to look " respectable:

    • @lisacooks
      @lisacooks 5 років тому +2

      @Julia Mimi I've traced my family back to the 1600s. White, Black, or Multi-Racial, I was surprised at how many of my relatives had such large disparity in ages, such large families, and had so many children, many that died very young or during childbirth, sometimes along with their Mothers. Then as I have done more research, a lot of people died young back then, leaving the other parent, who usually married within a year. People remarried more than I knew and most girls married in their teens then and very often to older men. So much has changed between the 19th century and the 21st century.

    This is so interesting. it goes to show how we living in the present all depend on the struggles of the past people in our family tree. I think for African Americans knowing where they came from was and remains important for a great sense of roots. Something that many slaves were forced to sever in order to survive under the yoke of slavery. Kamau should be proud. He has strong and great ancestors.

    C.J. and Francis were unmarried probably because it was illegal then.

    • @mimichandes
      @mimichandes 6 років тому +18

      Wat? That's a matter of preference not legality in this day and age. They could not legally be married then because mixed race marriages weren't recognised by law so likely they didn't bother.

    • @bhtv86
      @bhtv86 6 років тому +8

      @Zeeqtee Prn I have lots of questions based on that census. If the ages are correct Francis' first child was born right around Emancipation. She would have been roughly 19 and he would have been 50. The power imbalance there is huge. A newly freed slave, young with little to no education. I'm not saying it was or wasn't consensual, but consent is complicated by these factors.
      Also, how did she have the money to buy his land?

    • @VeridicusMaximus
      @VeridicusMaximus 5 років тому +14

      @Zeeqtee Prn Well, one possibility is that since it was illegal and they were living in the same household it would make sense to say she was his housekeeper.

    That is fantastic that you learned the truth about your great great grandfather, Carroll Dockery. He did not own your your great great grandmother and they were together consensually. Now your family members who had negative feelings and thoughts about him has to change that. And the land they lived on is still own by family. All of this is a good thing. Carroll Dockery is probably at peace knowing that his family knows there was love and respect between him and Francis - not pain and shame.

    I want to do this for my mother. She was adopted around 4/5. She didn't learn of her birth mother until 1977. Those who were aware have been so secretive, it is disheartening.
    My sister and I are working hard to find her family. Our mother is 77. I recently ordered the DNA test kit.
    As for our father his paternal side has seen some success. His mother is going nowhere.

      My observation from watching these ancestry kind of UA-cam episodes and especially from Kamau's story, is that while African Americans have scanty knowledge regarding where they come from in Africa, their American lineage is very well documented or easier to know. In Africa majority of us can only trace up to great grand parents, there are barely any records or memory beyond that (Perhaps just passed down stories which keep changing at times). On the flip side we at least know our tribes (or think we do, in the absence of DNA data). Kamau is a Kenyan name of the Kikuyu tribe, the first President of Kenya was born Kamau wa Ngengi (Kamau son of Ngengi, he later changed his name to Jomo Kenyatta. His son is the current Kenyan president (4th President) and his name is Uhuru Kenyatta. Uhuru is swahili for Freedom

    The Black seth rogan ...the laugh gives it away. Makes me think humans are so similar there might just be a certain number of templates, and with everyone's distinct characteristics defined by DNA... side note i might just be high right now.

    Every time he mentioned Reason and that still shot of Maurice White from EWF came up, I laughed, partly because the lead singer on "Reasons" was actually Philip Bailey.
    But at the same time, it made me a little sad, because Maurice White is no longer with us.
