I have Dockery, Bell and Mccants in my family and my mom and dad are both from Marengo County AL.........only an hour from Monroe County AL...........i'm pretty sure you're my cousin. lol........Ancestry matched me with some 430 cousins.
Reason Mccants is my great great great grandfather. His son James Mccants my. Great great grand daddy. James daughter Sarah Mccants Odom my great grandmother. I have a book that covers a 150 years of our family history and all this info is in this book from Mccants Odom Bell locked burgess
Awesome! Loved every minute and detailed bit of it. He and his parents are so adorable and have a great sense of humor. Loved the Ancestry researcher as well and how she took a little and made a lot. Thanks for reshowing these episodes!
Reason is such a beautiful name for both a boy and a girl. I hope you do name your new baby daughter after your great great grandfather to honor your legacy and his :-). Peace and love.
I loved this ❤. When history brings out stories of true love exceeding color barriers. That Carol Dockory had the courage to love Francis openly and raise his 13 children with her, for the length of time he lived. Never owning slaves (which could have been prosperous for him) but truly loved her, speaks volumes about his character. Amazing episode. Can't wait to do my ancestry-dna story and see what it reveals 😄
We're so glad that you've enjoyed this so much, Carlita! We appreciate you sharing your thoughts. We hope you're excited to make some new discoveries with your own DNA test results too! Have a wonderful day! 😊
I'm sure there were more than a few that did honor his children, be they mixed or pure white. And since back then many " marriages" might have been arranged by the parents, it is not too far.a stretch to suspect the mixed children were actually more loved. After all in the case of Feancis and Carol this was the " wife" he chose- not had foisted on Him to look " respectable:
Yoooooooo they was living together and he wasn’t her slave master and he didn’t own any slaves 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 yasssss. Ancestry DNA is bomb thanks for sharing your story.
I think a lot of this was going on along with the forced sexual activity. everybody didn't hate...and it seems those white men didn't have much but debt.
@Julia Mimi I've traced my family back to the 1600s. White, Black, or Multi-Racial, I was surprised at how many of my relatives had such large disparity in ages, such large families, and had so many children, many that died very young or during childbirth, sometimes along with their Mothers. Then as I have done more research, a lot of people died young back then, leaving the other parent, who usually married within a year. People remarried more than I knew and most girls married in their teens then and very often to older men. So much has changed between the 19th century and the 21st century.
This is so interesting. it goes to show how we living in the present all depend on the struggles of the past people in our family tree. I think for African Americans knowing where they came from was and remains important for a great sense of roots. Something that many slaves were forced to sever in order to survive under the yoke of slavery. Kamau should be proud. He has strong and great ancestors.
Reasons is one of my favorite songs from my favorite EW&F album Gratitude. I used to fall asleep listening to that album as a kid. I have the same CD in my car to this day.
Wat? That's a matter of preference not legality in this day and age. They could not legally be married then because mixed race marriages weren't recognised by law so likely they didn't bother.
@Zeeqtee Prn I have lots of questions based on that census. If the ages are correct Francis' first child was born right around Emancipation. She would have been roughly 19 and he would have been 50. The power imbalance there is huge. A newly freed slave, young with little to no education. I'm not saying it was or wasn't consensual, but consent is complicated by these factors. Also, how did she have the money to buy his land?
@Zeeqtee Prn Well, one possibility is that since it was illegal and they were living in the same household it would make sense to say she was his housekeeper.
Kamau, your dad's speaking voice sounds exactly like Obama's...same cadence, tone, volume...very cool. What a handsome man he is - and your mom is beautiful. I really enjoyed hearing your family history.
I’m so glad 3 parts were posted on YT so I could follow them. I wanted the story to continue. I love hearing and learning about people’s ancestry and roots.

That is fantastic that you learned the truth about your great great grandfather, Carroll Dockery. He did not own your your great great grandmother and they were together consensually. Now your family members who had negative feelings and thoughts about him has to change that. And the land they lived on is still own by family. All of this is a good thing. Carroll Dockery is probably at peace knowing that his family knows there was love and respect between him and Francis - not pain and shame.
Loved this, and love his show! He brings up many interesting topics on the show, which are delivered with lots of gentle humor. It has appeal for everyone.
I sure loved all three of these videos. What a happy surprise to find out Carroll and Frances were living a life together. Now I just wish I had someone who could do all this for me. Lol
I wish they could take a whole season and dedicate to explaining more details. Like how difficult it was for a black man to vote. All the requirements he had to fulfil in order to even pay the poll tax.
Not just the voting, what life was like in general. I would like to see what would have happened to them once they were freed and it would be great if they could show people who were successful also because I think there are more of them than we realise.
This was beautiful. It is heartwarming to know that for some of us there is light at the tunnels end. I want to do this for my mother. She was adopted around 4/5. She didn't learn of her birth mother until 1977. Those who were aware have been so secretive, it is disheartening. My sister and I are working hard to find her family. Our mother is 77. I recently ordered the DNA test kit. As for our father his paternal side has seen some success. His mother is going nowhere.
I really enjoyed this 3 part journey I would like to be able to see my family's history but with the war in Europe so much was destroyed and lost. One other comment that I have is that I really get tired of hearing about "Different races" I have always considered everyone to be part of the human race and it should not matter what color your skin may be!
This was great. I really enjoyed following along his history. Which we could all get such in-depth research on our ancestry. I’m British Afro Caribbean descent so my search would be completely different. Great content👌🏾👍🏾🇬🇧🇯🇲🇲🇶🇱🇨😍
In the previous episode he mentioned the Mcants plantation in Alabama. That's the last plantation my family was on. Then he goes to Monroeville and mentions the place my family is from Vredenburgh, Alabama. This is making me feel a little better about my search for my famy's history. All of the things my great grandma told me are adding up just watching this.
@@AnalystTosh That might be true. My family has many Mcants in its history. My mom is very familiar with the Bells. One of them was her teacher at the High School she attended.
My observation from watching these ancestry kind of UA-cam episodes and especially from Kamau's story, is that while African Americans have scanty knowledge regarding where they come from in Africa, their American lineage is very well documented or easier to know. In Africa majority of us can only trace up to great grand parents, there are barely any records or memory beyond that (Perhaps just passed down stories which keep changing at times). On the flip side we at least know our tribes (or think we do, in the absence of DNA data). Kamau is a Kenyan name of the Kikuyu tribe, the first President of Kenya was born Kamau wa Ngengi (Kamau son of Ngengi, he later changed his name to Jomo Kenyatta. His son is the current Kenyan president (4th President) and his name is Uhuru Kenyatta. Uhuru is swahili for Freedom
@@AnalystTosh It is upon us as Kenyans who are literate to take the documentation of our family lineages seriously. We don't even document our own languages and we don't teach them to our children anymore. So sad.
