2019 v 2021 v 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance Draggy times. Is UK Spec 460hp really 2.9 sec 0-60?

  • The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is HERE.. BUT compared to the US spec 510hp version the UK (and Europe, Australia, New Zealand and others from Shanghai factory???) get 460HP... and YET Tesla still claim 0-60mph takes only 2.9 seconds. How can that be so? Is it really true?
    It's all down to the battery.. The USA gets 82kwh Panasonic pack but we seem to get the 79kwh LG pack and that simply cannot output enough to make 510hp!
    I really needed to find out so grabbed a Draggy timing equipment and a quiet local road to test it. Crucially taking the cars with the same state of battery charge because this does have quite a big impact on performance. I have to say this new performance does feel like it drops off below 70% but more testing to follow on that! For now, I want to see if it really is faster!
    Tesla do include 1ft roll out but i'll show times with 1ft roll out excluded. I also have a little drag race 0-40mph down the side of our warehouse so you can see head to head..!
    2019 75kwh Performance
    v
    2024 79kWh Performance
    plus I also have my times from when I had an 82kWh Performance - not on the same day but tested under very similar conditions previously.
    Thanks for watching.

    I have a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance. It's awesome, but be careful. I've stopped sprinting away from ICE cars because it seriously pisses them off when they lose. I've experienced a couple of bad examples of road rage following a traffic light sprint, the last one with a BMW got dangerous.

    From what I understand Track Mode is not what you want for drag racing. A hot battery will give you more power in short bursts but Track Mode is designed to cool down the battery so that it will last longer before thermal throttling occurs. I believe the trick is to navigate to a nearby supercharger so that the preconditioning will warm up the battery.

    i drove this the other day, its certainly much nicer and faster but after about 30mins it felt similar to the older models. from the noise and suspension its only Veerry slightly better. The seats are more sporty but the sides are hard so they dig into ur legs and stomach.
    I thought the indicators would be an issue but its quite easy to use. The gear shifters on the screen are fine mainly because the screen is fast and snappy responsive like an iphone so its crucial for changing gears. Cameras are much better, quality and cameras respond way faster and clearer.

      @OlavAlexanderMjelde 2 місяці тому

      I dont see why it wouldnt fit. Maybe it will handle a bit better due to lighter wheels, but you most likely wont gain any range as the old ones are also good on aero.
      But me and a friend have been ding 3P modding with custom forged wheels etc. and it can get a bit quicker, but a square 235 setup on the "classic" 3P makes it 0.1-0.2 sec quicker at max. If you go wider tires, you most likely loose accelleration and range. Of course not all tires are created equal regards to rolling resistance etc.

    You will not see the difference to 60. The difference comes into play when doing the quarter mile as the additional hp takes over. Torque launches you, HP carries you. 0-60 would be about the same; dependent on driver reaction times. 1/4mile the additional hp would create a .3-.5 second gap or 5mph. The issue with the previous gen Tesla MP3 is they are one of the quickest cars on earth to 100mph, but loses steam afterwards where the corvettes, porsches, catches up. This newer model will make the MP3 hang in there with the supercars.

    • @louisolivierfortin
      @louisolivierfortin 2 місяці тому +3

      Your whole point is absolutely valid for the Fremont (panasonic battery) car. Sadly the LG battery car doesnt seem quicker at all than the previous gen after 50-60mph. It’s quite sad for global buyers honestly

    • @blower1
      @blower1 2 місяці тому +1

      @@louisolivierfortin Exactly this - the peak power output is limited entirely by the battery which has barely changed since the 2022/23 on European M3P. The LG battery has a much higher internal resistance compared to the Panasonics, this limits the max discharge current and hence max power output. There might be some gain on a 1/4 mile vs the non highland performance due to the peak power coming on later with the newer rear motor....but i don't expect much as its all just held back by the battery peak power limit.

    There are some pointers I have:
    1) Staggered wheels dont really help for dragracing in dry condtition, people in USA usually do square 235 setup for dragrace and 18-19" forged rims for less rotational mass.
    2) The lighter wheels with 235 width make it slightly faster 0-60, maybe 0.1-0.2 seconds if you go to 18-19" light wheels with 235 tires square.
    3) Should be said the new wheels are very light and efficcient, they are forged wheels. But rotational mass doesent help.
    4) Track mode should not be used for dragracing (I know you didnt), as it cools the battery too much. Rather. you want to preheat battery with either s3xy buttons/s3xy knob or "travel to supercharger" from car screen. Its good then to have the s3xy buttons or scan my tesla to see when your battery is hot enougn for max power.
    If you have s3xy knob you can use scanmytesla or use the app on a phone as a digital dash, there you can create widgets too, so for instance a dedicated battery heater option.
    5) Teslabjørn did some tests, he has compared and as you also saw: the new is quicker than the old. He saw that its almost as quick as a Taycan Turbo (the outgoing model), at 3.23 0-100 without rollout (that is about 3 blank 0-60 mph I believe, without rollout). As 60 mph isnst really 100km/h. The Taycan turbo did it in 3.21 in same measurements. Old Model 3 P did it in 3.4 0-100.
    6) Teslabjørn also did noise tests, it seems to have less noise than Taycan 4S with glass, around same as a Plaid with active noise cancellation on.
    7) To get max power out of an EV you need 40+C in the battery, so it can be a bit hard on colder days, so the preheat by travel to supercharger is a neat trick (or then the commander w/ s3xy buttons or s3xy knob).
    8) I saw in Teslabjørns video that it seems his inverters were powered with 299 kW on rear motor + 116.5 kW on front motor when he did a pull with over 90% SoC, that combined is 556 Hp.
    9) The old 3P was really quick up to 100km/h, but at especially above 150 it would taper off quite a bit. I think in 100+ is where there will be most difference, since people say the front motor gave up at high speed and the rear motor was limited on how much power it could use. The new rear motor can handle a lot more power, so it can keep accellerating much quicker at higher speeds.

      @louisolivierfortin 2 місяці тому

      I agree with most of your points except point #9. As of now, we have not seen a fully optimized 2024 m3p with LG battery do a 1/4mile significantly quicker/faster than the best the previous gen could do. This is in stark contrast to the US car which absolutely destroys the previous gen on the top end. I sadly think that the new LG car is going to be the least impressive at high speed. I would love to be wrong though

    I think, that this proves that upgrading from an old M3P to just get a very marginally, within margin of error 0-60 time is probably not worth it. I would look to the suspension, interior and refinement changes first before deciding . It’s a more compelling case to go from no M3P than if you already have one, esp an 82kwh one..

    Took delivery of a 2024 M3P last week, still own a 2020 M3P. The 2024 definitely feels a bit faster 0-60 but the main difference is 60+. It's absurd how much faster it pulls when your on an on-ramp for the motorway. I can easily hit +-100mph before having merged...
    However the difference in ride quality and wind noise is the main factor for me. I've always adored my 2020, the 2024 improves on it in every way.
    P.S. I dont miss the gear stalks, the buttons on the steering wheel are annoying on roundabouts though :)

      My thoughts also. We’re really getting screwed with this LG battery. From a roll from say 40mph there will be no significant difference, with the 2024 probably edging out the 2019 but very slowly. Wish we eventually get the panasonic battery in canada, it is a huge upgrade compared to the LG

      @@louisolivierfortin i doubt it will be that bad. The rear PM motor has 400hp vs the previous 280hp. Most of the high speed power drop off is due to the front induction motor and by the time you got to 100mph you only had about 350hp in the old m3p. I expect high speed power to be noticeably better in the new one even with the 460hp battery.

    Was keen on the new M3P and then I saw the rip off by Tesla... and I'm not surprised that no ones doing 1/4m runs (most important) based on the pathetic version, as the US spec one is doing 10.9's to the 1/4m... I suspect this one will be 11.3 to the 1/4m, so a 0.2 improvement over the outgoing M3P... The Ionic 5N will be quicker than the UK version (and a better drive) but slower than the US version to the 1/4m... and I feel mighty ripped off at being presented with a 'lesser' Tesla than our US counterparts... disgraceful from Tesla.

      I’ve seen a few of your comments and I 100% share your sentiment. It’s absolutely insulting that Tesla gave us an inferior, half baked performance model and the principle annoys me. My only hope is that they will replace both the Panasonic and LG packs with a next gen battery within 1-2 years and then we will have a Global M3P capable of delivering Ludicrous performance as the rear badge implies. Assuming Tesla doesn’t pull another stunt.

      Probably doesn't matter, but as the 2024 long range dual motor is restricted to 125mph it means the acceleration at higher speed tapers off a little sooner than the 2021 model. This means that the quarter mile time is 12.6 seconds in the 2024 car compared to 12.2 seconds in the 2021 car

    Hi, you keep saying that you only have the 79 kW battery, not the 82kw battery and this is why your power is down. But I thought the batteries gave you range, and it was the moter that produced the power. Is that not correct 😊

      Still depends how much electricity the pack can output at any one time

    • @rossadamdixon

      The Panasonic pack (82) can output more peak power. So it has more to do with the type of cells in the pack than the size of it. A 79kWh Panasonic pack would most likely have higher peak power than the 79kWh LG pack. Richard is just using 79 / 82 to differentiate between the 2.
      I think the bigger frustration is that the LG pack charges way slower than the Panasonic one. In terms of power, the new M3P with LG is still staggeringly fast.

    Please please please compare this car to the IONIQ 5 N - just got company car upgrade costs and the Model 3 Performance is £100/month more than the 5N. Not convinced that the Tesla is worth it.

      That’s strange as the tesla is £5k less

      I have the new performance and it's spectacular. The ride is fantastic and the cabin is much improved over the previous version.
      However, I do love the I5N! If you are buying it just as a car to drive fast and enjoy then I'm not sure you can look past the I5 being that it's £100 less a month than the M3P.
      However the ease at which the M3P can take cobbles and rough surfaces here in Edinburgh makes it a perfect all rounder. I'm not sure the Ioniq has that. The M3P is also 400kg lighter than the Ioniq. That's a huge amount!

      £100/month cheaper for 2 reasons - 1. Hyundai offering a substantial discounts (see Autotrader for evidence); 2. Tesla depreciation hurt the leaseco’s this year, and they are setting depreciation levels to protect themselves from a repeat.

      @evostu7814 possibly the Hyundai is offering fleet discount?

      @@evostu7814 It's the finance rates being offered by Tesla vs Hyundai. Tesla is not struggling to sell these cars so they will be offering a standard BOE base rate plus x on top. Hyundai may want to shift cars a little faster so are offering a better rate.
      Not Tesla is doing around 1% on the model Y in the UK for this reason.

      back in the day drag strips used a lazer on the wheels to calculate times. timer started when the lazer connected.. this meant that the timing didnt calculate the first foot of movement which was the time for the wheels to move out of the way!

    The performance doesn't have the LFP batteries and it has the highest battery degradation of any Tesla. It is a rich man's toy, but it is not built to maintain its longevity. It would be interesting to see what battery capacity your 2019 Performance Model 3 has left. At 100,000 miles, I would guess that it is around 85% of its original capacity.

    Do people actually want this many videos about the same car? Spoiler for previous videos without actually watching them: it’s very similar to the older one, has most of the same flaws and a few new ones.
    I know we can skip the tesla fanboy crap and I looking forward to them ending.
    Obviously you do you but you won’t know people are bored with it unless people like me moan, so here I am.
