Elaine Paige on Broadway as Norma Desmond.
I think this video is already online somewhere, but not in this good quality.
Also tagged on the end of this is the famous 'I'm ready for my close-up' line, with the 'With One Look' reprise.
MAKE THE FILM WITH EP!!
Many thanks to my EP friend Maria for originally sending me this!!
I had the pleasure of seeing her 3 times on Broadway and my god she was incredible........
Bravo! Thank you soooo much, Seb! My very favorite EP role! and my favorite song With One Look!
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I received tickets to see this as a Christmas gift. At the time, Glenn Close was still playing lead, but she stopped by the time we were to see it. I was so bummed, but I had no idea who was taking over! From the moment she took the stage, Ms. Paige was... breath taking. I think we can agree... Elaine Paige isn't just some old second rate back up... I've been trying to explain to my husband just how good it was... now I can show him... Wow! Thanks again!
After seeing all the videos of With one look with all 4 leading ladies I believe Elaine is the best combination of singing and acting ability. She can sing and she understud the point of the silent film era. Acting with face and body, not with words.
I saw the show 5 times on Broadway back in the nineties. The only Broadway Norma I missed was Glenn. Great memories!
Best evocation of Swanson’s creation. Paige channels her beautifully in her dialogue. Just enough to add another layer to this bizarre black musical comedy.
With one look-I'll baaay...Maaaaaaay! :-P
It's easier to sing like that. Patti Lupone does it too 😊
@@davidpayne697 On the original cast recording Patti clearly sings I''ll be me.
@@dohaperson1 Really? I'll have to check. Patti does have a rather poor record when it comes to diction though, for the most part from what I've heard
@@davidpayne697 Nope. Not Patti. Nor Barbra Streisand.
I’m the one that filmed this in the theatre.
I would love to hear this in the original key Patti sang it, Elaine would kill it
Strange they didn't change it back for her.
@@dohaperson1 or for Betty Buckley. Both of these ladies would have absolutely soared in the original Patti key.
@@Pastadudde All the women who played Norma except for Glenn Close could have sung it in the original key.
@@dohaperson1 even Petula Clark?! she was already 63 years old when she first played Norma lol
@@Pastadudde Glenn Close, Petula Clark, Rita Moreno: no way - but the rest Paige Buckley Karen Mason Linda Balgord...the real Broadway actresses should all have had the key changed back.
Thank you so much!
Lets just walk about the set! Its cost a lot of money!😅 i feel so sorry for these Norma's. Talk about bad direction!!
Saw her in London. Simply magical
Fabulous singer great voice
Saw her closing night on Broadway, absolutely , unequivocally, AMAZING !!!!!
I personally think Elaine Paige lends herself best to this musical. She has the Voice, Presence, and Look!!! :D
AMAZING! The greatest Norma of them ALL!
So. Many. Arms.
Absolutely! This was Norma Desmonds style- in silent films they not only acted with their faces the used arms Arms ARMS, babe! perfect directing
Stfu
And people said patti lupone was over the top!

Glenn Close
Queen of musicals
Close could take lessons: acting through singing. There's a concept for a musical
Agreed. Check out my other channel, THE FISHER KING, for her full 2018 revival performance. Some wobbly lines.
@@p.w.6355 thanks
Hahaha, you’re referencing Glenn Close, isn’t it strange? Come va Maria Callas?
The delusion!!! :) :) :)
oo its not good. The opening with the monkey was gorgeous but after she's drowned by the set, the score, the occasion. Paige is not that good. It screams: Betty Buckley is coming
Just love this woman. So wish I'd be more aware years ago and travelled to America to watch her on Broadway.
Best of the best.
Uhm...no. I’ve seen them all in the only one who did this world justice was Glenn Close. This is lackluster in comparison.
GC couldn’t sing it
@@robcrisall787 Not necessary. She still captured the depth of the role like no one I've seen. Here's another example of a non-singer doing a song better than anyone else I've ever seen:

Glenn Close sucked vocally and when I see musicals I want outstanding vocals.
@@victordunson719 But for me, Victor, musicals aren't just about the musical voice. Judi Dench's gut-wrenching delivery of "Send in the Clowns," Bea Arthur singing "I'll be Seeing You" at the 1994 MAC Awards, Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles maniacally singing the title song of "Cabaret" as her world implodes aound her ... these actors don't have "outstanding" or even pretty voices that are necessarily pleasing to the ear, but they had astounding depth in acting abilities that tore through their viewer's hearts and, ESPECIALLY in the Royal Albert Hall tribute to Webber, Close's did that for me.
I'm sorry, but there's only one Norma Desmond, and she's no Elaine Paige. You know who I'm talking about, don't you? :)
Do we?
The queen!
I saw her in 95 in London, and she was fabulous. My only criticism is that she comes across much older than a 50 year old, and it makes her seem a bit grandmotherly. Also, they had a much shorter supporting cast in London, so she didn’t appear as diminutive as she does here next to Alan Campbell. I’ve seen Glenn Close, Betty Buckley, Karen Mason, and Petula Clark play the role as well. Elaine Paige comes in second to Betty Buckley whose voice was so incredibly thrilling both times that I saw her on Broadway, that no one could compare.
Susan Dawn Carson is still my favorite from the original production (bway understudy). Petula was a tragic mess. Her accent was horrendous and As If We Never Said Goodbye had all the subtlety of a train derailment. She was the very definition of stunt casting. Glenn Close was mesmerizing, Betty Buckley was the full package, and Elaine Paige had a voice that's power was not matched until Stephanie J Block

Where did you get this? Please message me
the only norma of musical is glenn close
I am not paying hundreds of dollars for vocal mediocrity. I had the pleasure of seeing Elaine Paige 4 times on Broadway. She is astonishing.
victor dunson calling Close’s voice mediocre is already being nice
No.
This role is only for Betty Buckley
Sebastian Santana ^the balls on this one. Not wrong tho.
Awful acting to much arms.
Superficial. No class at all.
Help her Glenn Close ! Please
I've heard your singing and seen your performances. Methinks you have very little room to talk.
Elaine has accomplished a great deal in her career.
As a fellow artist, you should learn to keep such comments to yourself....and you should be thoroughly ashamed of your comments about another, but far more successful artist....or maybe you have sour grapes and are bitten by the green eyed monster? Whatever your excuse, you should learn to be less unprofessional.Shame on you. You are nasty!
You clearly don’t know anything Remi. Close was terrible
@@robcrisall787Your choice. It is not because you don't agree, that you are right !
@@robcrisall787 And still her interpretation is the most beloved! Paige was mediocre!
@@dirkandi sorry but you are clearly not a class actor like I am. I know good acting when I see it, and Paige was the best by far. No contest.
