Dude !!! I struggled for ages when I was given an xbox 360 and decided to buy myself a cheap kinect, with the idea of using it in windows. Had no idea I needed the adapter (which I got a few days later) but nothing I did worked, and it all seemed too much, so the kinect sat on a shelf for almost 4 months... decided to try again, because I'd seen talk of people using it. And found sites all saying use this, do that, etc, which I'd done before. Then I found this video. Cheers mate, concise and informative, without the conflicting posts in so many threads or videos telling you what to do only to find out it was for the xbox 1 and I'd just wasted more time... For people who have issues running it, make sure to download 1.8 I downloaded 2.0 at first which didn't work (i have the 360) 1.8 worked just fine though.
Yes for this model of device only 1.8 works. It happened to me as well. I also downloaded the 2.0 version. And I have Xbox 360 Kinect and for this device it only works with 1.8 version. It did not work with 2.0 on my side too. That is the official compatible version ^^ (And my laptop is windows 11 fyi and it works fine)
You can easily make an adapter with your own hands almost for free. You only need a wire cutter, duct tape, USB cord and a 12-volt dc power supply. All this exists in a special box in almost every home.

So, I have installed the 1.8 softwear in order. I plugged in the kinect and see a blinking green light on the kinect and a solid green on the adapter. When I attempt to run any of the apps though, I'm getting an error that I need to plug in the power (which already is plugged in) or that there is "No Ready Kinect Found!" Any ideas?
Thanks for the video. Until I saw it, I came across a slew of videos wherein in the creators would say to download SDK 2.0 for the 360 kinect. After watching each one, I would stop and scratch my head while wondering why the 2.0 developer toolkit would not read my v1 kinect. Your advice worked for me.
I have a question. I bought a kinect sensor to try and play around. But i have a problem, it has like double vision. Anything i ut in front of it like my hands sticking out, it shows 2 hands that are out of phase with each other, or a phone, it sees 2 phones or anything. Could it be a defective sensor?! Or some setting i don't know how to set?! Thanks
Model 1414. Generic USB hub (drivers unknown). Xbox API showing up in device manager but nothing else. Downloaded SDK and toolkit, it still doesn’t work. It’s connected to USB port 3.0, and I’ve tried other ports as well
Got one better. Found it in the moving room where tenants abandon stuff they don't need for others to take if they need it. in the box with all the cable including a USB adaptor with AC/DC adaptor dongle. However it says the dongle is "for WIFI only" in the manual. When I try to connect to compute - it's stuck in perpetual USB device discovery mode. Wonder if the same adaptor could be used for PC if I installed the drivers?
i cant find "kinect for windows device in device manager, the kinect works in sdk's all the devoloper programs but i want to use this as a web cam. I cannot figure out how to use this with windows applications
@@janekengiel There is a plugin for the latest version of OBS that lets you use the kinect directly as a webcam, with 3 options - colour, depth and IR. Quite well implemented actually. Just add the plugin from obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-kinect-with-faux-green-screen.897/ and then select it as a source. There is also a 'green screen' based on depth also. Hope that helps some. It did me! ETA - he's added the 360 to the github repo. sorry forgot to mention that. check the readmes.

Yeah, same here. Sorry to not provide any solutions, but I've tried replacing drivers and reinstalling multiple versions of the SDK with multiple compatibility modes as well as varying USB ports.
@@Blueharrybro I ended up just buying a Kinect V2, they're much more expensive but work so much easier. You just need the adapter cable and the latest SDK downloaded and it works. I did ultimately manage to get the V1 to work (Be sure to connect it to a USB 3.0 port) but I'm not entirely sure how. I remember I had two versions of the SDK which seemed to mess with it, so I uninstalled everything and installed only the V1 SDK, but sadly it was still sorta unstable.
Hello, I have an issue plugging my kinect into any pc - i get an error message saying the kinect is drawing too much power from the usb port and as a result the usb port turns off. Anyone else experienced this / know how to work around it?

@@neophyte4573 No lucky sorry. I gave up on it and bought Kinect v2 and a new adapter. This new one still gave me some trouble until I uninstalled all of the older drivers, installed new ones and rebooted my PC. Hope this helps. one day, after a long time of troubleshooting, i manged to get the kinect running. a day after it said not detected when i tried using anything (everything was still installed and plugged in) then after a long time of troubleshooting it now says not powered. the kinect clearly is powered from the blinking light, but it just doesnt want to work anymore. tried restarting my pc, rerouting the cables, removing and reinstalling every driver needed, including the 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 just in case, and nothing worked. i also tried using kinectcam.ax, but everything still refused to work. edit: now its stuck on initializing
@@kateshao1733 I had to reinstall the sdk again after the reboot, as the toolkit wouldn't install yelling at me it needed the sdk.. strange, but it works..
I've got the adapter and everything all hooked up seemingly correctly, but the Kinect never stops blinking and the PC doesn't pick up the video/audio feed in any apps. Any ideas?
@@MikeTheTech yea, ive tried USB 2 and 3.0, it does work in the 3.0 using some of the apps in the Kinect software (specifically the "background remover demo") but I still cant get discord, Skype or zoom to recognize it as a camera.
hmm, I installed both the software and the tool kit, but it doesn't seem to work. The program Kinect studio doesnt completely installe. Searching for a solution I went through the device preferences and found the Kinect for Windows, everything seems to be alright, however, in the events section it notifies me that: Device USB\VID_045E&PID_02AE\A00365912368104A requires further installation. Is this kinect for windows the right thing at all? (it might be something that I installed before finding this tutorial that just stays uncompatible with windows 10) And if yes what could it be? I have Visual Studio.. would be super glad to hear some good advice, because I already spend too much time on it ;z thanks in advance
hey i dont know if your still replying to comments but i picked one up aat my goodwill for about 10 bucks and i went to go home and connect it and download all the stuff required. it gives me a green flashing light and wont connect to my pc. what did i do wrong?
is there any way (or reason) to turn it off when its not needed other than unplugging it? I imagine there isn't much of an incentive to but presumably its on 24/7 when its plugged in because the green light is always flashing and I don't want to wear out its lifespan earlier than I need too even if it is just a little bit.

How good is the video quality of the Kinect 360 cam if you use it as webcam or for streaming? I liked the video but would only want to buy the adaptor and do this set up if the eventual output is nice.
When I plug in the kinect to the 3rd party adapter/usb splitter thing, it does't turn on at all, but when I plug the usb in, the kinect starts blinking green light but the computer doesnt detect any signal from the kinect. What should I do?

Hi, can you tell me if you are using a laptop or a desktop setup for this? I am using a laptop and have it working, however whenever I try to use it with an external display the 360 Kinect stops working. Been trying to use the Kinect 360 as a webcam, on windows 10 64 bit, but I have not been successful. I get an error "We can't find your camera... error code 0xA00F4244". I am able to use it with OpenNI Virtual Webcam only!!! It does not work with OBS, DigiCamControl, nor Facebook Live . Does anyone have the same issues or had found the workaround to make it work and be found by Win 10?
The Kinect toolkit isn’t detecting my Kinect even though it’s plugged in. Help pls! It says initializing in the status bar and then it says plug it in, okay, I unplug it, and plug it in again. It says initializing, it detects the Kinect for about 2 seconds and then it says too many usb devices plugged in, and then the Kinect turns off

My Kinect camera was working fine and then there were some updates by windows and now I can not connect to my Kinect camera. Shows I have all the software ... tried reloading the software again for the Kinect with no luck with the camera connecting to Background Basics- WPF.. (RUN) like on the video..
Figured it out .... apparently the Kinect software became corrupted when Windows did the updates (best guess) .. removed the Kinect programs and and reloaded again ... ALL IS GOOD AGAIN!...
I had mine working for a bit but when I tried switching from one sample to another it stopped working and the light is blinking green. I can't find anything helpful online. Can anyone help?
@Cooper Mulderry, I'm having the *exact* same scenario! It works as a mic, but video doesn't work. Discord is the only app that recognizes it as a camera, but it loads forever. No other app even recognizes it as a webcam.

I did everything, and I still cannot get my 360 Kinect to work on my WIndow 10 Prof. All that it does is blink the green light. When I run the developer, it keeps saying that there is an issue, and not connected. Does this work with windows 10 pro?
hello mike, do you have any video or HOW to install drivers on laptop for the kinect and what to expect, etc etc? im killing myself here for a week and i just cant put this kinect to work. device manager sees it for some seconds, driver installation eventually fails... sounds from system bipping that is installing and re-installing.. and in the end i have nothing from kinect in device manager. if i run background app or sth i have no device found message also. help please! :)

Hi Mike good video, do you happen to know if the 1414 model Kinect has a problem working on Windows 7 or 8.1? I have 2 model 1414 the first one worked for a short time but nether of my 1414 will work now. Question do the camera's go bad in the Kinect if so were can one find replacement parts? Thank you
@@MikeTheTech Thank you for the reply. I tried to get a 1473 model but the guy on ebay sent me another 1414 and it wouldn't work with ether the Windows 7 or 8.1 so I returned it to the guy. So that's 3 model 1414 that didn't work. I ordered another model 1473 on Monday and waiting to see what I get in the mail this time. The last two model 1414 loaded Xbox Kinect Audio and Xbox NUI Camera drivers. So don't know if they are the correct drive to run on Windows 7 or 8.1.

there are more compatible software (drivers) for xbox 360 than for xbox one. I have both.

My Kinect keeps turning off but, when I do a windows app, it turns on but sometimes it doesn’t. Any way to make it not turn off?

Is it plugged into a USB 3 port? Some slower USB ports or unpowered USB hubs can't run it properly.

It's not a camera, it's a sensor. It senses movement of possible human bodies and sends a signal back to the computer/xbox running it. Sorry.

one day, after a long time of troubleshooting, i manged to get the kinect running. a day after it said not detected when i tried using anything (everything was still installed and plugged in)
then after a long time of troubleshooting it now says not powered. the kinect clearly is powered from the blinking light, but it just doesnt want to work anymore. tried restarting my pc, rerouting the cables, removing and reinstalling every driver needed, including the 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 just in case, and nothing worked. i also tried using kinectcam.ax, but everything still refused to work.
edit: now its stuck on initializing

after you install the sdk, have you reboot the pc?
Do you have the official power cord and correct SDK?
@@kateshao1733 I had to reinstall the sdk again after the reboot, as the toolkit wouldn't install yelling at me it needed the sdk.. strange, but it works..
I've got the adapter and everything all hooked up seemingly correctly, but the Kinect never stops blinking and the PC doesn't pick up the video/audio feed in any apps. Any ideas?

@@MikeTheTech yea, ive tried USB 2 and 3.0, it does work in the 3.0 using some of the apps in the Kinect software (specifically the "background remover demo") but I still cant get discord, Skype or zoom to recognize it as a camera.

hmm, I installed both the software and the tool kit, but it doesn't seem to work. The program Kinect studio doesnt completely installe. Searching for a solution I went through the device preferences and found the Kinect for Windows, everything seems to be alright, however, in the events section it notifies me that:
Device USB\VID_045E&PID_02AE\A00365912368104A requires further installation.
Is this kinect for windows the right thing at all? (it might be something that I installed before finding this tutorial that just stays uncompatible with windows 10) And if yes what could it be? I have Visual Studio..

hey i dont know if your still replying to comments but i picked one up aat my goodwill for about 10 bucks and i went to go home and connect it and download all the stuff required. it gives me a green flashing light and wont connect to my pc. what did i do wrong?

I imagine there isn't much of an incentive to but presumably its on 24/7 when its plugged in because the green light is always flashing and I don't want to wear out its lifespan earlier than I need too even if it is just a little bit.

Hi, can you tell me if you are using a laptop or a desktop setup for this? I am using a laptop and have it working, however whenever I try to use it with an external display the 360 Kinect stops working. Think it has something to do with overloading the usb/HDMI/MiniDisplay ports on a laptop. Any help much appreciated. Thanks for great tutorial.

Been trying to use the Kinect 360 as a webcam, on windows 10 64 bit, but I have not been successful. I get an error "We can't find your camera... error code 0xA00F4244". I am able to use it with OpenNI Virtual Webcam only!!! It does not work with OBS, DigiCamControl, nor Facebook Live . Does anyone have the same issues or had found the workaround to make it work and be found by Win 10?

My Kinect camera was working fine and then there were some updates by windows and now I can not connect to my Kinect camera. Shows I have all the software ... tried reloading the software again for the Kinect with no luck with the camera connecting to Background Basics- WPF.. (RUN) like on the video..
Figured it out .... apparently the Kinect software became corrupted when Windows did the updates (best guess) .. removed the Kinect programs and and reloaded again ... ALL IS GOOD AGAIN!...
I had mine working for a bit but when I tried switching from one sample to another it stopped working and the light is blinking green. I can't find anything helpful online. Can anyone help?
I got the kinect working in the toolkit, but I'm trying to get it to work as a webcam with Discord, Skype and zoom. I get audio, but no video.
@Cooper Mulderry, I'm having the *exact* same scenario! It works as a mic, but video doesn't work. Discord is the only app that recognizes it as a camera, but it loads forever. No other app even recognizes it as a webcam.
I uploaded another video with a workaround.

Still works here. You just have to reinstall the SDK and such.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro and it works. There may be an internal error on the Kinect. Is it plugged into a USBV 3.0 port?

hello mike, do you have any video or HOW to install drivers on laptop for the kinect and what to expect, etc etc? im killing myself here for a week and i just cant put this kinect to work. device manager sees it for some seconds, driver installation eventually fails... sounds from system bipping that is installing and re-installing.. and in the end i have nothing from kinect in device manager. if i run background app or sth i have no device found message also. help please! :)

I have 2 model 1414 the first one worked for a short time but nether of my 1414 will work now. Question do the camera's go bad in the Kinect if so were can one find replacement parts? Thank you
They should still work with the 1.8 sdk. Only eBay as far as I know.
@@MikeTheTech Thank you for the reply. I tried to get a 1473 model but the guy on ebay sent me another 1414 and it wouldn't work with ether the Windows 7 or 8.1 so I returned it to the guy. So that's 3 model 1414 that didn't work. I ordered another model 1473 on Monday and waiting to see what I get in the mail this time. The last two model 1414 loaded Xbox Kinect Audio and Xbox NUI Camera drivers. So don't know if they are the correct drive to run on Windows 7 or 8.1.

This was on a GTX 1060 on an MSI/Intel laptop. I'm currently on an AMD 5700 XT on a Ryzen 7 3700X.
