What a great band, I still listen to this album. I've grown tired of most of the music I listened to in the 90's but this album is a real jewel from beginning to end.
This is seriously one of the best drummers in rock. All of Shapeshifter album, the drumming is so versatile and different and he's got so much groove in his playing.
Also why he starts off talking about the trading of tea... tea was traded, opium was given in return "poppies" and his reference to his majesty sending soldiers and theives to India (colonial India)...this entire song is talking about British Imperialism. It's a very clever song.
That’s what I thought because I remember learning that China was accepting opium(which was banned in china) through the black market of sorts in exchange for materials to Britain meaning Britain almost single handedly made an opium crisis through china
their stage setup is cool. the drum kit stand at an angle and then mic and bass on the end. almost reminds me of the Pixies' stage. also this whole fucking show kicks ass my God Wstock 98 had its moments. would love to have this on dvd to play once and a while
I agree, but I don't. If they were popular like the rest the industry would find a way to pervert the realness of the music and use it to benefit thier pockets by making it what they wanted. Everything nowadays is American Idol and the Voice. It's sad. This is real and because it's untouched, it stays that way.
@totallycolin dude they talk about heroin a ton throughout their songs as well. I mean heroin comes form the poppy plant too...the song is also talking about the origin of heroin.
This was actually called A Day In The Garden. This was Day 3 of the event, held at the site of the original Woodstock. Goo Goo Dolls, Marcy Playground, Dishwalla, Joan Osborne, The Flys and Third Eye Blind played this day.
@@tyrikdowling9226 It was a fun day. Was hot that day, worst sunburn I have ever had! The first two days were cool as well...alot of artists from the original festival performed the first two days. Too bad the disaster of 99 happened, just a year later.
Poppies were already well discovered at that point. They are referring to a time in history. It's around the time of colonial India when the British empire was bringing European power to Asia and a time which we would refer to now in history books as The Opium Wars, the British Empire was becoming aware of its societies growing drug addiction. China was trading Opium to Britain this explains the pieces of eight, world currency widely used in EU. Isn't anyone required to learn history anymore?
All I can remember about Woodstock '98 was douchebags raping girls, fights, they nearly destroyed the whole place and Nirvana wasnt there. The 1st Woodstock was the best and is irreplaceable. Some of the bands, like this one MP, were very good tho, it had SOME good music.

Damn, I had an album from every band on that line up that year.
That would have been a great show.

Does anybody know if this is an official page of John Wozniak or Marcy Playground, or just a fan page? I'm curious.
