Long time viewer first time commentator. This was one of the most charming videos I have ever seen. Are parks opened all day and night? In the States the parks usually close at dusk. Thank you again for the amazing video and the showing the Tokyo we don’t see in the movies.
Thanks! For the most part, parks are open all day and night. There are some major parks, like Shinjuku Gyoen which do close. But besides the popular central parks, I don't think they have any closing times. This is why they're really handy for going to the bathroom or getting water. _Parks in B.C. in Canada do close at dusk, and if they don't have gates preventing entry, the bathroom facilities do usually close, so that's why I find it so convenient travelling around Japan by foot or bike.
@@LifeWhereImFrom However no children are allowed at night. There typically is some old due that patrols the parks and tells kids to go home. Makes me so nostalgic about all the places I cycled in Tokyo and excited about the parts I never explored. I’ve walked 40km across Tokyo, also and it was just such a treat (especially the walk across rainbow bridge). I’m planning a cycle from north to south Japan when tourists are allowed back in.
I really loved this video, thank you for making it! I live in the Netherlands, we have more bikes than people and the entire infrastructure is made with bike paths either on roads, separate paths along side roads or just bike paths on their own. Cars are used to driving next to bikes and everyone on a bike has basically grown up on it, maybe a little less so in the bigger cities, but even in big cities bikes are aplenty. You'll see people with a kid on the front, a kid on the back, shopping bags on the side, riding like it's no trouble at all. I have two bikes, and a dog-cart so it's easier to bring my dog around, and since we currently don't have a car I could use it to haul stuff if needed, but bike-bags (attached to the sides on the back) and a basket up front go a long way. I feel like making a trip in my bike now!
From an Australian woman who has lived in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and have visited Paris, London, Chicago, Hong Kong and New Delhi, among other great cities, I thank you so much for this beautiful and enjoyable tour video of such a wonderful city. I went to Japan a little while ago and when you went to some places I recognized I got exited every time, it really felt like reliving part of my trip there since I ended up just walking around and taking the train all day to find cool scenery like this a lot of the time. Awesome video :)
Thats exactly what i was going to say, but then saw your comment :) i stayed near that bridge with the dragons on it and walked passed it nearly everyday in Tokyo. Cant wait to go back one day
I’m visiting Japan for the first time and I’m staying in the meguro area and today I did half of your Japan by bike trip! I rode from meguro across the rainbow bridge and got to the arakawa river took a brake viewed some sakura then back tracked. But it was cool to see some of the same places you filmed. I got to walk the south and north side of rainbow bridge😁
What a great video. I visit Tokyo often, so it was really nice to see many streets I'm very familiar with, as well as those I haven't seen yet. It never ceases to amaze me how such a big metropolitan area can be so calm just one lane away from a major road. I think many people have a misconception that Tokyo is an extremely crowded and chaotic city. I find it quite the opposite.
bro dont believe the youtubers that are making video about japan saying it is beautiful ! it is indeed for visiting not for living ! its so damn expensive and not everyone will be a youtuber !
@@maruwan-dono I think Greg should kindly do a video estimating how much you need to earn to be able to live in Tokyo? Would be great to see and a man can only hope
@@maruwan-dono It's not that expensive. I live and work in Tokyo in the tech industry, and honestly, it feels ridiculously affordable compared to the last two places I lived and worked in the U.S. (Fairfax, Virginia and Torrance, California). Hell, my rent in Tokyo is almost half of what it was in Torrance (I'm paying roughly the equivalent of $900/mo and living in the heart of Kichijoji), though granted it's a MUCH smaller apartment. And last year, I lived in suburban Ibaraki prefecture, and it was DIRT cheap. My apartment was huge, I had ready access to public transportation, the location was beautiful, and my rent was the equivalent of $450/mo, which is ludicrously affordable. I was on a teacher's salary at the time, too -- and not even JET, but an independent and not especially reputable teaching program -- and I still saved a ton of money over the course of the year.
Great show! I lived near Mitaka station '63-78 and rode my 10-speed Bridgestone everywhere in Western Tokyo. We rarely had bike paths then (nor GPS), but it was so nostalgic weaving around poles and cars. I even made it to Lake Nojiri (260km) in 22 hours one summer!
Comfy as hell. It's interesting how a humongous city like Tokyo has so many relaxing parts to it. I really wanna go to Japan again and chill at my favorite bar in Ikebukuro.
You've captured the essence of urban cycling in Tokyo. I've ridden pretty much every one of the routes you took on this journey. Arakawa and Tamagawa make for relaxing long rides. More please :)

The blues nets are to protect te building from the natural elements like rain and dust. but its also protecting people around the building for falling stuff. At least in my country
Yep, and in the U.S. they drape nets over the entire building if they're working on the exterior of an existing building (usually skyscrapers/multi-story buildings)

as a Dutch person, some of these "safe space for bikes" seem kinda scary to me, either way, this video was great, Tokyo is a really beautiful city and this video showed how cycling in Tokyo works really well

When my friends and I visited Amsterdam, we were intent on biking around the city at first, then saw how fast the local experienced bikers were going. I guess it all depends on perspective! Also, you may know this but Tokyo Station (shown around 30:33) was based on Amsterdam Central.
Compare it to American streets and it looks like a bike haven by comparison, but there are definitely points that would have made me nervous riding on them
Hello from Wales. Thank you for the tour of Tokyo, you captured some really nice footage on your adventure. I especially enjoyed the pacing of your trip, i usually ride quite fast along some very busy roads, but the areas you cycled through seem to forcibly slow the pace down, which forces you to take in more and enjoy another part of bike riding. Thanks again
20:28 I love these small neighborhoods with those one-car trains passing through them!!! oh I'd love to just stay in such a neighborhood just for a staycation... just to feel a different kind of environment than my home...
Thanks for this Greg! I really enjoyed seeing Tokyo by bike, something I've always wanted to do. I appreciate your portrayal of the places you went, it seemed very genuine, and I would imagine it would look the same if I was there. I find that travel content can be sensationalized, doesn't necessarily portray the landscape honestly. So thank you for this! Also your biking endurance impressed me, especially in the dark! That's pretty brave!
Thanks! I was trying to paint an accurate picture of the landscapes, so I glad you enjoyed it. Biking at night was no big deal. In fact, it was quite relaxing as there was less traffic to contend with.
From someone stuck in the house due to injury, I really enjoyed this video of you exploring a city I would love to visit. Thanks for sharing the sites!
Wow, Tokyo looks super clean to me. I have visited Tokyo in 2016, and have planed the trip for this year but have to cancel due to the Pandemic. Hope having a chance to visit Tokyo next year.
What I love about videos like this is most videos about Japan obsess at how amazingly perfect and clean it is but even Japan has its normal working slightly rough places. A normal view of a place.
This is probably the fourth time I watch this video. Good job on this. It would be really cool to have a version without commentary so that I can sit back, be immersed, and relax.

I'll re-watch this video ever so often just for the good and peaceful vibes. Can't wait for my first Japan adventure in the not so distant future.
From an Australian woman who has lived in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and have visited Paris, London, Chicago, Hong Kong and New Delhi, among other great cities, I thank you so much for this beautiful and enjoyable tour video of such a wonderful city. I enjoyed how well you negotiated all the bicycle and walkways revealing so many green parks and spaces beside waterways.
I guess greg could make a 100 minute film on any topic which i never knew i wanted to know more about and we will watch it
This is one of the most relaxing videos I've seen in years
this has been one of my favourite videos ever since the day it came out. i watch it a lot when i'm having a tough day with my mental and physical health and today is one such time. thanks for making such calming and easy to watch content!
I'm a Tokyo resident. Great quality video.
Nice to go to different neighborhoods, see what its like and feel the atmosphere there.
I'll go fix my bike while waiting for the pandemic situation to get better.
Every corner in the city looks so eye refreshing, it's sad since I canceled my trip to tokyo this year due to coronavirus, hopefully next year I can go to Japan again especially Tokyo and rent a bike to go around Tokyo by bike like you did! Amazing video
Oh to bike around Japan, everything there has such a nice and scenic vibe I'd bike everywhere! This is such a calming video i'd pull it up on my TV everytime need to de-stress!!
Thank you for giving us a glimpse of how amazing Tokyo looks like. Discovering the city while having a bike ride sounds such fun.
Even for years later this vlog gets me hyped and hooked! After many years of dreaming and working to someday visit this beautiful country I will finally see all this beauty this year!
Great video. Thank you for posting it. I only walked around Tokyo, but I biked two times around Shikoku (Hachijūhakkasho-meguri 1400 km) and two times Shimanami Kaido. I love Japan.
凄いですね🚲😊
Infinity War: We have the most ambitious crossover
John and Greg: Hold our sake
I always wanted them to do a crossover.. I finally got it ❤️
We have a much more immersive crossover planned!
@@LifeWhereImFrom Crossover including Angela from Internationally Me and Paolo From Tokyo when? That'll be the ultimate crossover!
You again
Have been totally enjoying your top-quality videos during this stay-at-home period in Southern California. My favs: a former bike ride around Tokyo, family reunion glamping in Canada, tour of kitchens around the world, touring the hot springs. You’re quite a goodwill ambassador for Japan. Bravo! Continued blessings to you and your lovely family.
I went to Japan a little while ago and when you went to some places I recognized I got exited every time, it really felt like reliving part of my trip there since I ended up just walking around and taking the train all day to find cool scenery like this a lot of the time. Awesome video :)
I'm glad you could enjoy a bit of nostalgia!
"look at this thing. its not that nice but its ok" every time you show something nicer than 90% of all American infrastructure. absolutely beautiful.
I can't stop smiling while watching this video.
the music even made it better!
it deserve more view for sure!!
amazing amazing. well made!!
No trash. No graffiti anywhere. Leave your stuff anywhere and it's there when you get back. If the whole world was like Japan, just imagine.
Graffiti right here 17:12
bro dont believe the youtubers that are making video about japan saying it is beautiful ! it is indeed for visiting not for living ! its so damn expensive and not everyone will be a youtuber !
Heeeh What's WRONG with Graffiti?!
Please keep making these bike tokyo area videos so calming
Thank you so much for making this video to allow me (who is staying at home for 3+ months now) to explore my favorite country! Hopefully I can go back to Japan soon!
I was at the Odaiba Gundam area in December last year during my vacation. It's CRAZY to see the difference in energy level and lack of crowd. It's so chill. I'm jealous.
Please dont stop uploading. Im still watching this video at least once a week. My mom has passed now but i take so much comfort in your voice and videos
I really love your videos, this one was exceptionally amazing, I proposed to my wife at the upper floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in 2017, and the part where you reach that building gave me goosebumps.
Thank you so much for this video.
Wow... Tokyo is so beautiful..
Everything and i mean everything looks so relaxed in Japan/Tokyo. Im really jealous of the people living in that beautiful country. Maybe the most civilized Country in the world, we all could learn from them! 💚 Japan.
Such a wonderful ride. Japan and Korea have the best places to ride. Definitely on my to do list. The scenery is magnificent.
As a 406 folding bike commuter, the 20" city bike is such a mood. ❤
looks like such a bike friendly city for the most part - especially when you consider that it's the most densely populated (or at least one of the most) in the world. Thx for sharing!
Truly amazing trip round the city ... loved it!!!
My favorite video! My husband and I play this one after a stressful work day. We’re fairly new subscribers and are enjoying all your videos. Thank you for sharing your family’s experiences and your knowledge of life in Japan with the world. What makes your videos so enjoyable is that your respect for all people and their many cultures and beliefs really shows in every episode. Stay safe and well.
Your collab with JOHN IS WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR 🤩
6:50 In the Netherlands, there're also guides to put your wheels in, and they're placed&built so you can't ride on those at all...
You can also just rebel and bounce down the stairs themselves, which is especially easy if the steps are wide
I miss japan and cant wait to go back.
So awesome to have first person view of cycling in Tokyo!! Thank you! The night views were gorgeous!
what a beautiful city, landscape, environment, facility etc
"There and back again." - This might just be a coincidence but this reference comes so timely. R.I.P Sir Ian Holm (12 September 1931 - 19 June 2020), the Bilbo Baggins who've been there and back again. Great video as always!
Right!!!
This brings me memories from my childhood in Tokyo back in the 80's, this my favorite video you did so far , thanks greg!
I was so exited during watching this Video. On my vacations, I love to spotted around in areas i have never been to and enjoy the vibes around it. And this is exactly what this Video feels like to me. This Video has inspired me once more to discover to not so touristic areas in Tokyo and other Citys at my next trip to Japan. Thanks a lot for taking us on this incredible bike tour!
I biked from my house in Chiba to Tokyo along the coast and rivers many many times.
I moved away now and I miss that peaceful journey all the time. I should have taken more photos along the way.
Thanks so much for uploading this.
I love love LOVE the way your filming gives a glimpse into the "normal" side of Tokyo. It takes my breath away. I’m a total sucker for the real aspect of big cities
as a Dutch person, some of these "safe space for bikes" seem kinda scary to me, either way, this video was great, Tokyo is a really beautiful city and this video showed how cycling in Tokyo works really well
At some points I wasn‘t sure if he was really appreciating the space or being sarcastic.
Nice video, exploring those nice areas which you usually miss when going to the touristic hotspots by train.
When my friends and I visited Amsterdam, we were intent on biking around the city at first, then saw how fast the local experienced bikers were going. I guess it all depends on perspective!
Also, you may know this but Tokyo Station (shown around 30:33) was based on Amsterdam Central.
Compare it to American streets and it looks like a bike haven by comparison, but there are definitely points that would have made me nervous riding on them
It seems like cars are far more aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
@@Arkiasis the speed of cars is usually lower too (when bike and car traffic mix at least) compared to other cities.
This is amazing! I would live to see more bike tours like this. Thank you so very much for posting this video.
Thanks again
this really is my favorite video on youtube
20:28 I love these small neighborhoods with those one-car trains passing through them!!! oh I'd love to just stay in such a neighborhood just for a staycation... just to feel a different kind of environment than my home...
Thought I was gonna be skipping past the 35 mins video. Ended up watching throughout. So calming and felt like I was riding with you!
I've started biking around Tokyo more these days and I'm so glad that you released this video! I'll be adding this route to my list :)
Tokyo is a really beautiful city this video really showed how beautiful and livable tokyo is
From someone stuck in the house due to injury, I really enjoyed this video of you exploring a city I would love to visit. Thanks for sharing the sites!
I really like you show more of the "normal" side of Tokyo besides the hustle-bustle side like the typical Shinjuku view in the video. Great work!
Wow, Tokyo looks super clean to me. I have visited Tokyo in 2016, and have planed the trip for this year but have to cancel due to the Pandemic. Hope having a chance to visit Tokyo next year.
dont forget the olympic games, will be quite pricy to visit tokyo this year.
Watched the whole thing! really love the scenic tokyo spots and how you seemingly talk about them
So many walking and riding paths that are so exquisitely maintained
What I love about videos like this is most videos about Japan obsess at how amazingly perfect and clean it is but even Japan has its normal working slightly rough places. A normal view of a place.
This is probably the fourth time I watch this video. Good job on this. It would be really cool to have a version without commentary so that I can sit back, be immersed, and relax.
You should do more of these!
Hermano amo andar en bicicleta, y mi sueño es conocer Japón este vídeo fue todo. Ya te sigo desde México.
Had many flashbacks to my vacation in Tokyo, including a bike trip. Thank you very much for bringing back these memories 🙂
Thanks for showing me many scenes of Tokyo that I've never seen before.
This is my kind of city. Modern enough to have public transit and yet still embracing green spaces.
