I remember seeing this show and wanted it to last longer on television. Also in hope that Dean Martin would turn up one night. After seeing Frank Sinatra with Jerry Lewis. Charlie was great. Then the show was gone. What a drag. With me being from Australia. I thought it was magic. Thanx for posting.
It feels like yesterday anticipating this show. My brother and I loved it, being fans of entertainments golden-age, but knew times had changed and it likely wouldn't last long.
Frank Sinatra said he was never on a talk show before 1984? He was on Johnny Carson in November 1976. Beyond that he actually hosted the Tonight Show a year later on November 14, 1977. A Monday night.
I don’t remember Jerry Lewis doing a show back in the 80’s. It was nice to see Sinatra on a talk show but he really didn’t say much. I would like to hear him talk about his performances and talk about his movies that he made. The role he took in The Man with the Golden Arm was fantastic. There was one scene in that movie where Sinatra was going through withdraws from being a junkie. It was so spot-on in acting, one would actually think he was a drug addict or just a great actor. I remember Sinatra said one time, he studied for that role by going into a rehab facility and he studied the addicts going through withdraws. If you want to see a great Sinatra performance in film, check out, The man with the Golden Arm. He should of gotten an Oscar for that performance.
I remember rushing home (as a teenager) to watch this week of shows which was tested via then Metromedia's (now FOX) group of Television Stations. The audience looked as though it was comprised of network executives. LOL. Mr. Sinatra appeared and guest hosted Mr. Carson's, "Tonight Show." Lou Brown and His Orchestra were simply terrific!
To say that Frank Sinatra never did talk shows was inaccurate. I've seen him on the Tonight Show with Johnny and even once when Joey Bishop was guest hosting.
This show was an on-air tryout. During the week of June 11, 1984, Lewis hosted , with Charlie Callas as Lewis' announcer/sidekick. Metromedia decided not to go forward with the project after a one-week trial run.
Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, so many other legends. All from the same generation. Incredible. Re Frank, I'm grateful for his music, but what I'm most grateful for is him helping Dean and Jerry take the first step toward reconciling.
Appreciate the background info. I faintly recall Alan Thicke's syndicated talk show but not Jerry's. Having only lasted five episodes, that's perfectly understandable.
anthony risola Maybe he just mis-pronounced her name. I've heard him mis-pronounce other people's names on occasion, who he had worked with before. Just because he pronounced her name that way, doesn't mean he didn't know who she was. She appeared on his telethon several times during the 80's.
Dean Martin could have pulled this off. Jerry does the same stuff for years. Everything is marvelous. He seems fake acting nice. I seen him at my neighbors house. She was the first person to graduate that had MD. On camera he done the laugh, lighter with high flame. Once the camera was off he was so rude. He expected everyone to kiss his butt.
Too scripted! Jerry was "corsetted" by the format. And Callas wasn't the right "Second Banana" to Jerry. And inviting luminaries like Sinatra was the wrong decision - the atmosphere was too reverential.
Joe Postove It only lasted a week. “Alan Thicke created his own late night talk show to compete against NBC's highly rated The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. The series, entitled Thicke of the Night, was syndicated and only ran for one season before being crushed by Carson and cancelled in June 1984. Needing a replacement program, series distributor Metromedia gave Lewis an on-air tryout in Thicke's former slot. During the week of June 18, 1984, Lewis hosted The Jerry Lewis Show, with Charlie Callas as Lewis' announcer/sidekick.The show failed to attract audiences, and even with guests like Frank Sinatra, it still was not enough to keep viewers watching beyond its one-week trial run and ended after its June 22 episode.” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jerry_Lewis_Show
Hi, I'm enjoying these videos you're posting very much, especially the ones from the "Jerry Lewis Show". But I'm from Spain and I don't get the last joke in Sinatra's interview. When Jerry's talking about the pictures in his scratchbook, what name does he say, apart from his own, Sinatra's, Al Jolson's and Dean Martin? And then, what does he say about "the singer" and "the band" in his two last interventions? Thanks very much, I love these old time videos, and this interview with Sinatra is amazing.
+TheRafermom I'm glad you're enjoying these videos. The singer was Jack Eigan. The joke was about Al Jolson as "that other singer" and how he should've been with a band. Frank Sinatra said that "he never had the training with a band." Of course this was the joke, since Al Jolson was a great singer.
Noted elsewhere in the comments, but bizarrely not in the video description ... this was a 5-episode try-out which aired only on WNEW-TV in New York City for a production company seeking a replacement for Alan Thicke's syndicated late night talk show Thicke Of The Night, which disastrously attempted to compete against The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Thicke's show was cancelled in June 1984 after one season. Based on Lewis' "try-out" his show was not picked up for production and it's glaringly obvious why. He was terrible!
What are Jerry and Frank talking about? Sinatra appeared on talk shows before this -- just search youtube for his appearances on the Tonight Show with Carson. He even guest-hosted for Carson.
@@givethechanceakid I'm still confused about ur point -- they both clearly say "never", which is a flat-out lie. Neither anticipated that the Internet and UA-cam would prove them wrong.
Martin and Lewis were wonderful. Jerry on his own had some great moments. But at some point in time, the funny man had a difficult time masking his anger and was no longer funny. And the less relevant he became, the more angry he got. ... Anger is very seldom funny and by the 1980s, neither was Jerry Lewis. ... I loved him as a kid, but I didn't feel obligated to hang on to that love as an adult.
Besides a couple of filmed interviews where he was rightly angry, I don't know exactly what you are referring to. Comedians are allowed to have human emotions, geez. Are you telling me that you don't get angry?
+A Krenwinkle This show was produced by Metromedia which was purchased by Fox in 1986 to launch their network. After Alan Thicke's talk show (Thicke of the Night) was cancelled, they gave Lewis a one week test run during the summer of 1984 but the ratings were awful.
+greg6363 Thanks for info. Sidenote: I never noticed Jerry's nose before; I found it quite normal. Dean was the one who needed, and got, a nose job. But to be honest, when Jerry came out, I thought he was wearing a comedy nose for some bit. I've heard Sinatra's water joke so often over the years. The thought of going half an hour without booze. Hardee-har-har. Still, he was a real friend, participating in this mess.
I have a theory. I think Mr. Lewis was cashing in on the attention he got from playing a talk show host in “The King of Comedy”. He’s NOT a talk show host. He’s a comedic genius who belongs in the movies.
Prophetic like words from Sinatra about the state of present music. No longevity which I notice even a lot more in the 21st century than back in the 1980s when he commented on present music.
Charlie Calas was terrific...for about the first show...LOL. He was too obnoxious for my taste. LMAO. Other than that, I loved this Show and rushed home to watch it for the one week test run.
Lewis sucks all the energy out of the room. He has to be a smartass and he has to wear his ego on his sleeve (and what was Charlie Callas doing that he thought was so funny?). I heard Lewis say that he had a contract to do A show for 5 years for $40 million. And he said, in a rare moment of humility, that he knew it was a terrible idea. But when the show didn't end up going forward, he still got his $40 million. I don't know whether he was referring to THIS show or ANOTHER Jerry Lewis show, an earlier variety series, which was truly, truly, embarrassingly awful.

Sinatras iconic talk show appearance with Rickles was 1976
