Harvesting trees for a log cabin SOLO. Deep dive.

- Can I harvest enough logs for a small cabin? I'm going to try. It's something I've always wanted to do.
The trees I'm felling are black spruce, common here in Interior Alaska. They are typically found in dense stands and are not typically used due to their small size. They're really not used for much and they choke the land. I'm going to search for logs 6-8 inches in diameter for this project. This is property we own. By harvesting these logs, the forest will also benefit with more sunlight and room for other trees to grow bigger and stronger. I will also be able to use more of the land. Wood is the most sustainable material to build with, and using timber from my own land is a more economical option.
I'm using a draw knife, bark spud, Collins axe, and an Echo CS-400 Chainsaw. I've been running a chainsaw for over 25 years. This is my first Echo. I usually use Stihl chainsaws, but my last one (MS-250) blew up this spring. To be honest, I'm loving this Echo! New fan!

1) Thanks in advance for NOT commenting on my lack of PPE, chainsaw use, or how harvesting trees is killing the forest (which, in fact, is doing the opposite.) After nearly 8 years on UA-cam I know what's coming.
2) I don't take unnecessary risks and being alone heightens your situational awareness. I don't take it lightly. I wouldn't do this alone if I didn't feel confident of my abilities. I have a great first aid kit and people who know where I am. (My only injury was a small cut from my bark spud.)
3) I've been running a chainsaw for over 25 years, and though you may not approve of my style, or you would do things differently, that's ok. There's room for all of us! There is power in radical DOING.
4) I have 52 logs total. I hope to build a 12 x 16-ish sized cabin. It may have a framed upper loft. We'll see. I've got lots of time to figure this out. The logs will season until next summer.
5) As I say in the video, the bark will be burned. You could make a basket or two if you had time, but I'm busy with the logs. The bark dries to a brittle crisp in a matter of days. It could not be used as roofing material. Full of holes and just asking for leakage and bugs.
I appreciate you all and thanks for watching!
Hey girl, I never second guess your judgment. You know your stuff a-z. Love you and your channel.
In the 55 years I've logged in the woods, I didn't use ppe either! The nay sayers can comment all they want! The most dangerous time is when you're working with other people and they are inexperienced!!
good for u..i would do the same ..yrs of experiance using a saw has taught me well.
Where's the laugh emoji!? 😆 I never watch your channel to find fault! Man, it never occurred to me! I'm 17 years older than you and am self taught in virtually everything and happily pick up skills from others. Most of the best makers and artisans are also. Brooke, you have my respect and delight! 😘
You should NEVER have to explain yourself! It's obvious this isn't your first rodeo! {I loved all the builds you've done}... Don't answer trolls!
Brooke you are an inspiration to every woman who ever wanted to go forward in life without a man by your side. Dave would be there if you wanted him too, he trust you to do what you want and need to do. That’s an inspiration in itself knowing your hubby supports you. God bless you and your amazing family.
Brooke is the Katherine Hepburn of our day. IMHO. :D

Someday Brooke will brush out her hair, put on a dress and surprise Dave. I hope she films it! 👗
my 9year old son loved this video - he said it's "so SATISFYING" when you peel back the trees' skin. I know you feel the same - thanks for the great video!
At '72 yrs old now. I'm an old retired Homebuilder as well as Military retirement. When I was in my 20's I had the pleasure to help an old carpenter build a Log Cabin. It was AWESOME ! We did exactly what you are doing. Hard Work, but well worth it. I Loved every minute of it. Even the heat , snakes, fire ants and bee stings didn't stop us. We did it ! You are one AWESOME Lady !! GOD Speed and Carry On ! HooAH !!
Girl in the woods has to be one of the best you tube channels. it teaches, funny, family friendly, and so much information given, and showing us the beautiful places you live/own, and just how much a little hard work can make an amazing thing, knowledge of nature is just lovely to watch and learn, your husbands channel and now your sons are all the same, keep on keeping on and stay happy. xx
Thanks so much 😊
@@therealgirlinthewoodsI have to agree and as far as that Betting on Alaska goes....I am completely betting on him!

I am past my prime but will be living vicariously through you while you complete your cabin project. You are such a strong woman with a total commitment to whatever you do. Peeling off that bark was such an unexpected treat as well as great ASMR, too! Go Brooke!
wow you lok fine to me.
Am past my prime to be doing this too but I sure think you are doing a great job!
You do more work in an hour than I do in a day! You made it look easy to fell a tree and peel the bark. WOW! Thanks for bringing us along! 😃
And me for a year 😅
Harder work than most people realize congrats on doing what you want to accomplish in your life hon

I would have never thought bark would peel off like that under the needed condition of the sap. That was awesome to watch. Brooke, this has to be one of your finest videos, true cinematography, pure artistry.
Certain times of the year bark comes off better than others. Some trees it almost falls off.
I agree with you on the pure artistry of this video…..And it was so satisfying watching that bark peel away from the tree.
I’ve heard that it peels off easily at a window of opportunity, which is different depending on the area in which you live.
If a tre ain't dead and you can peel it like that no need for a powerwasher.
Bark peels easily but once it’s been down for a bit, it’s a much different story.
Gosh Brooke I can't express enough how much I enjoyed this video. So much about it. Your eagerness to show your Faith and Gratitude had always touched me. The Grace you show to the forest, the amazing skill and working smart, to rest time with pan bath. All of it. I can't ever get enough of you, Dave and now Mick. You have your cabin, right there, and you cut and processed every log! Well done! My very best to you all.
thanks so much
Hi Brooke, I'm new to your chanel. Lots of respect to you doing al the work to build a cabin...❤❤
This whole video jad me marveling in the providence of our LORD. When she actually thanked the LORD for His blessings had me saing Amen with a great smile
Rejoice in the LORD.
Great video ! Cant wait to follow this project, I enjoy your families videos so much !!
This stripping of black spruce was amazing. I have never seen bark come off “like strips of linoleum “ just after the sap run. What beautiful wood you revealed.
Thank you,

If you hadn’t filmed this work you’ve done, some people wouldn’t believe that you did it yourself. Those of us who know you and your family, even if just through your videos, know that you can do anything that you put your mind to. Thank you for sharing this labor of love with us. Blessings to you and your family.
I’m totally aware of that
100% agreed. this was amazing to watch and i've also been watching her a really long time now. 😂🤣 i was imagining someone finding this cabin, and her after just finishing the build being all desheveled, saying she built this cabin they might think she's crazy and got lost hahahaha

I'm glad you finally showed the water bottle. Hydration is imperative in the heat.
Also, Towndends has a segment of them building their cabin. They peeled their logs, too. They flattenthe bark and used it for roofing. It took them quite some time to find the best way to cut notches.
You are definitely 1 of the hardest working lady I have ever saw. Looking forward to watching what you create out of all the logs. Take a good break you need it after that. Sending warm wishes to you and your family.
Wow Brooke, you never cease to amaze me! Congratulations on accomplishing phase 1 of your log cabin build! You have more determination and steadfastness than any woman I know! God bless you! Well Brooke you got all those muscles from paddling down the Yukon so now being a Lumber Jill looks easy for you (I know better). Makes me appreciate the work my ancestors who were wilderness Pioneers in the 17th and 18th Centuries did to build. No chain saws but sharp axes and two man saws. Be proud Brooke! You have done well.

Brooke, you can use the crooked logs in the windows and door areas! Try to think about where you're going to have them when you're bucking them!
Or make some chairs & tables out of them.

Beautiful logs Brooke. I’ll be watching- of course! and cheering you on big time ! Praying you don’t get hurt in the process. It’ll be a beautiful log cabin ♥️
You are my hero.
I love how you are able to get the trees to fall where you want them to go. I watched how you do it very carefully in case I have to. I’m thinking that the crooked log might make some interesting posts on a porch for instance. Also learned when to peel.
I am so enjoying watching you work methodically, knowing exactly what your goals are every step of the way.
