We went to Withernsea for a very wet and muddy weekend break and a friend recommended a chip shop in Hornsea. I found the place and thought I'd have a look how much it was to eat inside as the weather was very windy and that fine rain blowing all over our faces. For extras, they were charging £5.50 for a portion of chips and £3.50 for a large sausage. Suffice to say, we didn't go in there at all.
totally agree with you over the donation, giving to charities to me is a very personal thing. I think a lot of people/companies know that the british are very generous towards charities and decide its an easy way to make money. we had a few quid charged to our cabin on a recent cruise with TUI, i had it removed as we were not informed. when i did this they did say its in the T"s and C"s, my reply was you could have told me when you asked me to register my credit card before we got on board. But as you say you do feel a bit guilty but sod it, cheeky buggers didn't even sy which charity it was going to!!!!
£115 for a meal and a few extras for 2 adults and 2 small kids, scandalous. I've seen many youtubers going abroad (including yourself) and it's the same every time - the food looks twice as good and is a third of the price. We're well and truly having our pants pulled down in this country, for everything not just food.
Currently, in Bangalore a discount is being offered by one of the food delivery aggregators. And it's 50% off on the dinner bill. Many of the five star restaurants too are included in the deal. We had a Pan Asian dinner buffet at one of the five star restaurants for Six people and it cost us €70. Four youngsters enjoyed unlimited food .
I've been to a Rockfish in Poole a couple of years ago, and enjoyed the experience (they had fresh grilled sardines as a starter that day, yum!) - at that point chips were served in more sensible sized portions, although you could still ask for more for free if required. it wasn't cheap, but a nice eating experience. I agree though that it's becoming prohibitive taking family out for a meal. On Mother's Day took my other half and 2 kids to a Thai place in Wimborne, no alcohol purchased but the bill totaled over £135. Just last night I went for dinner with my Mum to a Chinese restaurant in Dorchester, and for 4 of us that was over £130. Sadly it's a sign of the times though. Costs have risen astronomically for catering businesses, cost of ingredients, rents, energy, staffing (and yes that is in big part due to Brexit!). Businesses are shouldering a lot of those costs themselves, but most simply have to be passed onto the consumer. It feel worse too as of course most people's household budgets are stretched due to many of the same reasons. It's clear that until the economic situation changes, we'll all have to start viewing family meals out as more of an occasional treat than we have over the last 10 or 20 years. Of course, that will unfortunately mean many catering businesses going to the wall. Seeing it already down here in Dorset.
me and my later partner went Brixham every year from 2008 to 2018 2 weeks a time and occasionally another week later in the year.we would visit Paignon Torquay every year and always make a visit to Paignton zoo.we loved the whole area in Devon.thanks for the memories Lee.
I loved this Vlog. It was lovely that you included the special people in your trip too . The cost of living is high and your'e in the UKs Riviera where it is expensive anyway. Cheaper to take them abroad it seems and boy havent H n J grown up. remembering my single parent holidays with my 3!!!! im addicted to F n Chips thanks to you!!! Hope you all ejoyed the trip, but my ........that was an expensive meal!!! Love to you all!!!! xxxx
Lee I live in Cornwall and you wonder why we have booked 8 days in Croatia at the end of June. Flights for 2 and Air BNB, £800 in total. Rockfish looks nothing more than a tourist trap.
Wow! Expensive. Love watching the videos, here in North Thailand at a local resort I go to sometimes, plate of chicken with rice followed by 3 scoops amazing ice cream comes to £3
£115 , that’s a bit rich , but even at those prices the place looked pretty full . Can’t be too much of a recession in the UK . Wish we could get proper fish and chips here in Oz . 7/10 from me.
Well I live in Devon and can’t go near holiday places when it’s in season as can’t get parked etc, mind you can’t get on beach as use a wheelchair. It was expensive because it’s rockfish there are a few down here. Paignton has some nice fish and chip shops probably about £8 each. Poor octopus I used to eat but won’t now as they are empathetic and intelligent creatures. But that’s just me, but other animals are too. Our water bills are the highest too and bus fares.
This place would have been my last choice to eat on holiday. It’s not really a family restaurant, it’s high end fish and chips, for a really special treat i would say, there are plenty of cheaper fish restaurants along the same road , albeit still a little pricey for a family of 4. Also the price of the drinks hike it up.
Hi Lee, another good video. Although I like cod / haddock with chips and all the trimmings I do like a red snapper, just gutted with the head and tail on, grilled or pan fried. I have that all the time when in Malta.
Hi Lee, Absolutely lovely humble blog . Wonderful to see you having quality time with your lovely family . Great blog ..great info . Looking forward to the next one. Welcome Home . 👍
The peas and curry sauce looked revolting. I know restaurants need to cover costs and make a profit, but the mark up on bottles of wine (quick glance showed nothing remarkable) was about 400% or more. Unacceptable.
An award wining family wine merchant in Clitheroe has a spring assortment of outstanding wines (I would suggest of greater quality than the basic, overpriced wines on the menu) of 12 assorted wines from around the world for £91.99. That’s £7.67 each.
We were in the UK for Xmas & New Year & were shocked at how expensive it is to eat out anywhere there now. It was always cheaper than Australia but you are catching up very quickly. The bearded sailor (Pudsey) were the best F & Cs we had & I mentioned that watching it on your channel took us there & he was very pleased, we even put a pin on the map. Have you replaced the old Nike's yet? That's another thing that has increased significantly in the UK recently - Trainers!! lol
😊😊😊😊Very wonderful looking family restaurant looks absolutely delicious I am looking at a 9 for all the food. Thank you for sharing.😊😊😊😊 Yes no can do the SKIN😮😮😮
In the late 80's, early 90's our holiday destination was Paignton. Even back then it was expensive, but loved the Devon countryside. Do you know if the giant waterslide is still in Torbay?
Wish my bill was only £115 for my family of 5, rarely ever get change from £200 for a meal out. Don't eat out in Kent, £18 to £25 for mains as standard.
Love Brixham used to holiday there ourselves lovely family orientated place. got to say the food looked delicious with that skinny Rockfish & Scragg end chips. I also thought that was too expensive for a family of four & yes I know your on the harbour front & the Restaurants are heavily hit by the Rates but they really should cater for family's who are properly on a budget, speculate to accumulate as my late father would say. Great Vlog Lee. Onwards
Another great vlog you bring up a very important point the cost of family holidays in the UK 115 quid for a family meal unaffordable for most people Benidorm for me
Lee is a professional and an entertainer!!!Macmaster rules!!!Lee we love you man!!!Always waiting for the next video!!!My regards from Cyprus mate !!!Take care man!!!
Lee, great video again this time visiting the quaint seaside village of Brixham. Your visit to the Rockfish restaurant reminded me of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. Even the inside of the restaurant looked like one of those there. Anyway, like here in the States on the East Coast, we have those seaside restaurants as well. You visited your friend Martin and saw the restaurant prices here. They’ve all increased substantially since the end of the Covid shutdown. I think it’s the same there in the U.K. The food looked appetizing and you probably got a good amount although you feel it was high priced. Well, all I can say is it is a great travelogue. I’m ready for my next trip to the U.K. since it’s over 25 years since I’ve been there. ✈️
It may be cheaper abroad but then you’ve to get to the airport, pay for the taxi/parking and pay for the flights before you can even consider costs for food
Cost me £200 in diesel to get there. 3 nights in a hotel in Torquay was £670. Then the food and drink and ice creams. Not much more to go abroad. It's a shame really as I love the UK. :(
We were in Torquay and Brixham two weeks ago - must have just missed you but the weather wasn't so kind. Haven't been to that eatery and, yes,to me those are steep prices with rather thin fish. These sort of prices seem to becoming the norm I'm afraid and as you say it's prohibitive for a family group cost wise. Also agree about the cost of an ice cream cone, quite ridiculous prices of between £3 and £4 we've experienced at several resorts. However, bargain alert, we were in Weymouth just before Easter with one of our grandsons and finished off our 'Spoons meal with their ice cream - two big scoops plus chocolate and maple sauce for £1.67! Families please note! The fish n child were good as they usually are there as well. Great vlog as usual Lee.
got to remember brixham and torbay area are tourist traps and the fish and chips and food in general would be more expensive un like leeds, leeds, leeds :)
We visited Brixham as part of our stay in Devon last October. Thought the same price wise across all of the coastal places (Beer (the town) seemed similar - although I think that is the Yorkshire in me!
Hi there, a brilliant video like always. I was going to go to Torquay in the next few weeks to do some videos for my own UA-cam channel a great header on the price. A really interesting video like always. I do enjoy any of your videos so you make them and make them so entertaining and great information. Keep up the good work
Me and my girlfriend went to Brixham last year for her birthday for one week. Yes I can relate to the prices But was well worth it done, crab, fishing and mackerel fishing stayed at the harbour view keep up the great work I enjoy everyone of your videos
A couple of years ago we went to Simply Fish restaurant/takeaway in Brixham. We ate in, yes it was pricey but it was delicious. Would highly recommend. Lovely to see you with your beautiful family ❤
Brixham's absolutely lovely! Not been to Rockfish but my favourite Brixham chippy's almost directly opposite the Golden Hind, and has a takeaway downstairs and a restaurant up. Not been since 2018 but I remember that it was reasonably priced-I suspect you're paying for the Rockfish trendy name! The problem chippies have is that, cod in particular, has got scarce over the years, pushing the price up and, of course, recently, they've had to contend with silly energy prices too! Tbh, not sure how abroad does things cheaper!
What a lovely video... It was lovely to see you being a Daddy.... The prices were a bit steep... As you pointed out how do familys afford to treat their kids while on holiday .. Cxxx
If I had seen those prices ,, It would have been get your coats we're leaving. Then found a nice local Cafe and had a nice family meal for half that price. 😂✌
So the prices on those menus are quite bizzare to me. Some of the starters and sides seems quite reasonable along with the desert liqueurs and digestifs HOWEVER some of those prices for the mains are pretty expensive considering it is right next to the coast. The dover sole is an expensive fish and these days unfortunately you would pay around £40 for it in London at a restaurant (used to be able to get it for £15 at M&S in central London around 7 years ago) but you would again expect it to be cheaper by the seaside. Very odd pricing as restaurants usually mark up their drinks and sides and try to keep their mains down in price as a result.
Went to Weymouth for the Easter weekend and had fish n chips from a chippy. £11.90 for a small cod & £4 for chips. OK, they were cooked to order, & the batter was crispy. But I think that at near on £16 for one person was a tad expensive.
I wouldn't pay those prices you could have gone somewhere a lot cheaper up one of the side streets. I bet none of the locals go in there except maybe the day they have the special for a fiver.
Well lee some people have to holiday in uk due to medical conditions and disabilities so we have to unfortunately put up and shut up and pay through the nose just to get a break there are some places that are reasonably priced and family run
I've been looking at special Airbnb's in Devon or Cornwall for our 30th wedding anniversary this summer and we're both in agreement we are going to one of the Costas for guaranteed sun and a cost saving! Costs are here are spiralling out of control!!
You could have had two Fish & Chips at Morrisons for £10 including Mushy Peas and a Pot of tea each, Kids eat free and puddings are about £2.50 each. So the whole meal for the family would have been under £15.00 Compared to over a £100 it seems a good deal to me.
Lee, the bottom line is as long as the family is happy, that is all that matters. As for the food and what you got, it is on the pricey side. Your 7 is about right, maybe a 6, because of that donation BS.
Like this style of video when you look back and have time to think when you aren't pressured by external factors when in the street etc. More of this type please. Great video by the way, seemed a bit of a tourist trap.
Hi Lee glad you and the family had a lovely break 👍Now to that food it looked over priced tasteless crap that fish was pink under fried. Get to the lifeboat chipshop Scarborough.
Lee, if you go to a high end eatery you are going to pay high end prices, regardless of the quality or quantity you get, you do not have to eat there, there are plenty of reasonably priced family friendly places to eat.
Hi Lee , yes you are right we get well overcharged for eating out in the uk and £115 for what looked like mediocre fish and chips it’s wrong , I can’t imagine what it would cost to take a family away for a week over here 😳,definitely a lot cheaper abroad .
Simon Hulstone is a well-regarded Torquay chef. He tweeted out his energy prices earlier: May 2021 Gas - £345 May 2022 gas - £1086 May 2023 Gas - £ 3018 estimate May 2021 elec - £1509 May 2022 elec - £ 2498 May 2023 elec - £ 5279 estimate And he only does a four day week. I think your answer is there. Petit Paris has just closed down in Nottingham after 27 years because prices are simply unsustainable. Then again, Rockfish can't be struggling too much as they're still expanding!
I no it’s tough out there but you can’t just keep putting the cost to the customer. Or people won’t come to eat there’s got to be a bit of give and take.also look at the long term has when we eventually get out the other end the greedy ones won’t have business’s . Because people will just not use the business’s that where just being greedy.rockfish for one I live in the southeast so an expensive area and the fish and chip shops by me are charging roughly for cod and chips around £7.50-8.00. So I don’t no where company’s like rockfish can charge that silly amount.
I have to agree. The initial outlay to build in these premium locations combined with the overheads for these premises would make your eyes water. You cannot compare them to a small chippy set up in an old terrace in a dying part of town for example . They are different business models aiming at different markets. Rockfish is not buying from Bookers. Its a big investment and a massive cost base.... and its very well done.
I go to Spain often, almost guaranteed sunshine and a menu del dia ( three courses with a drink) for £8.50 to £10.50 no comparison England can't compete
I think that's one of the few times I could tell by your face what you felt about a place before hand. Those prices aren't a little bit ridiculous, they are freakin mad! That's more than London! Enjoyed the video
If you think those prices are expensive, don't think of coming to NYC. You can't get a glass of wine here now for less than $14...and this is in a middle of the run restaurant.
There are several “”Rockfish” in Devon ( I live here) and they vary, but their fish is very fresh and tasty … price is over the top for a “chip shop” but it’s classed as restaurant not chip shop and the ambience at night is a lot different when it comes to life … yes there are more take aways there with bigger portions and cheaper but not quite like for like on this one …. Anyway great blog as usual.👍😎.
The calamari did look good. The batter on your fish looked good, not too thick however the fish was thin but I would have chosen cod. Sticky toffee pudding did look really good. Overall I get really fantastic cod and chip from my local. Plus yours was expensive but there again you were in a restaurant. So I would give it an 8. Thanks Lee and family.
Am in Southern Germany right now. England is reasonable by comparison. Prices are ridiculous here. Try £43 for a basic sirloin steak with a side salad in a mid range restaurant.
We had fish and chips from our local chippy, 3 medium cod, 1 large chips and some mushy peas to share between 4, cost about £27, used to get the same amount for about £15. Not a cheap meal these days. Incidentally I noticed coley on the menu which my mum used to buy for the cat as a treat, obviously now only a treat for adults. Nice to see the little'uns growing up.

I wouldn't pay those prices you could have gone somewhere a lot cheaper up one of the side streets. I bet none of the locals go in there except maybe the day they have the special for a fiver.
It was very nice to get a small insight to just Lee and not the macmaster spending quality time with the family,, great vlog 🇮🇪
Well lee some people have to holiday in uk due to medical conditions and disabilities so we have to unfortunately put up and shut up and pay through the nose just to get a break there are some places that are reasonably priced and family run
Really looking forward to this one
I've been looking at special Airbnb's in Devon or Cornwall for our 30th wedding anniversary this summer and we're both in agreement we are going to one of the Costas for guaranteed sun and a cost saving! Costs are here are spiralling out of control!!
I wouldnt be able to afford that £115 i think thats OTT we only pay £7 for a meal (Take out)l at Papas in Blackpool.
You could have had two Fish & Chips at Morrisons for £10 including Mushy Peas and a Pot of tea each, Kids eat free and puddings are about £2.50 each. So the whole meal for the family would have been under £15.00
Compared to over a £100 it seems a good deal to me.
Lee, was that filmed with your usual camera because the colours, contrast and sharpness are outstanding? Looked really good.
Hey it was my iPhone 13 Mini. Cheaper iPhone but filmed in Very Hi Res.
You’re paying for the location - how much is the yearly rent on that place? My guess is around £150k.
which fish and chips was better Lee this or benidorm?
Lee, if you go to a high end eatery you are going to pay high end prices, regardless of the quality or quantity you get, you do not have to eat there, there are plenty of reasonably priced family friendly places to eat.
i miss the family vlogs you did they were great x
I live in Paignton which is the next town . That’s way to expensive! I love Brixham but you can get better for half the price !
What about Nickie's fish and chips at top of town cheap cheap and decent chips.
Hi Lee , yes you are right we get well overcharged for eating out in the uk and £115 for what looked like mediocre fish and chips it’s wrong , I can’t imagine what it would cost to take a family away for a week over here 😳,definitely a lot cheaper abroad .
Certainly not in the USA.
Simon Hulstone is a well-regarded Torquay chef. He tweeted out his energy prices earlier:
May 2021 Gas - £345
May 2022 gas - £1086
May 2023 Gas - £ 3018 estimate
May 2021 elec - £1509
May 2022 elec - £ 2498
May 2023 elec - £ 5279 estimate
And he only does a four day week.
Yes. Bloody Brexit and Govt as ever
Prices are a big con. They using every excuse under the sun to rip customer's off
I go to Spain often, almost guaranteed sunshine and a menu del dia ( three courses with a drink) for £8.50 to £10.50 no comparison England can't compete
Been to the one in Torquay.. I was astounded how expensive it was... still a brilliant vlog Lee
I think when I went to the Torquay branch it was about £75 for three people. We had three mains and one starter! No drinks.
Brixham is lovely, couple of years since I was there, enjoy with your family xx
I think that's one of the few times I could tell by your face what you felt about a place before hand. Those prices aren't a little bit ridiculous, they are freakin mad! That's more than London! Enjoyed the video
Like the style of the video. Keep it up.
Great to see ur lovely family lee ❤❤❤❤
Love to see the family vlog ♥️
If you think those prices are expensive, don't think of coming to NYC. You can't get a glass of wine here now for less than $14...and this is in a middle of the run restaurant.
How much?
Aww looking forward to this. ❤
I won't be going to that
Plaice
Anytime soon
Family holidays do get expensive when you've got the family with you, you're quite right, Lee. 🤣
We have Fish, Chips mushy Peas and a Tub of gravy OR curry.£5.50 from Amanda's near Rhyl. It's really good value in a Tray. And lovey Cooked.
Anyway great blog as usual.👍😎.
hi its the rates and rent in the uk that we have to cover first to make a living, that affects what people have to charge
Plus the fuel /energy increases, so many resorting to staying in and doing their own.
We are in Blackpool at the mo having breakfast in a few places wow one is for just £5 with a tea or a coffee you get 11 items for just £5 wow
What's name ,I'm in Blackpool weekend ,fancy those prices
You went to the prime located tourist restaurant, hence paying a premium. You would have been better off at Simply Fish on the inner harbour side.
Look very nice there nice to see you and family having a lovely time together 😊👍
It is fairly expensive now in the South West tourist hotspots. We normally trip it down to Cornwall, food has shot up in price considerably.
I live in Torquay, there is a south ,north divide my father in law lives near Eastwood and when go up it is so much cheaper on everything.👍
Always good vids my friend. ;-]. Can you please tell me what camera and mic you use???
The price alone had to drop it to a 5 way too expensive, Pollock is seen as a poor substitute for cod for many people that's not to say its inferior.
Spot on about cat food.....Coley is another name for a type of Pollock (or Pollack as this outfit call it)
Looks lovely there 👍.. glad Lee and family enjoyed themselves.. food 9.
Stayed there in July 1969. Forty years later just missed Neil Armstrong in Belfast by 3 minutes as he jumped in the taxi before me.
Oh wow you went to Torquay!! I live near there in Teignmouth!
And yep, expensive down here. Us locals are paying tourist prices!¬
