  • In the summer, I occasionally get brown spots on my lawn, where I don’t have good coverage from my sprinklers. To solve this problem, I’ll water the brown spot with an oscillating sprinkler connected to a hose. The problem is that I often, forget about the sprinkler, and will let it run for hours. I’ve even forgotten about it, and it’s run over night, flooding my lawn, and wasting water and money.
I know that hose timers exist, but I want to try something new. I’m going to hook my hose sprinkler to a valve and have it controlled with a soil moisture sensor, so that I get the exact amount of water for the grass.
To do this I’m going to use a Vegetronix VH400 soil moisture sensor, a VegeHub Wifi Controller, and a Latching Sprinkler Valve, and some various fittings from my hardware store.
    PARTS USED:
    VH400 Soil Moisture Sensor - vegetronix.com...
VegeHub WiFi Sensor Reader and Controller - vegetronix.com...
    Latching Valve - vegetronix.com...
Latching sprinkler valves are cool, because they can be battery powered. To turn on or off they only require a brief pulse of current.
I can set the desired moisture level using phone to access the VegeHub which serves up a WiFi Hotspot. The VegeHub reads the sensor, and will stop the sprinkler when the soil is just the right moisture level.
