The intro here is pure GOLD
Finally, a LEGO replication of real-life object that's actually cheaper than buying the real thing.
Oh my god I'm so early on a Jang video. This set gives strong "monkey Christ" vibes, like someone tried to do a quick touchup on the Mona Lisa with some water colors from Michael's.
I thought of “Monkey Christ” too!
I want this. I will hang it in the hallway right across the front door. If this doesnt scare my mother-in-law away, nothing cant.
She has an enigmatic tile.
Lol! You should start every video with “hi I’m Jang and I have opinions”
Honestly, if i get this i would remove the prints that make the The lips and the eyes. I would rather a blank face. I feel like with the familiarity of the peice, people will know its the Mona Lisa without having to see her facial features. That frame is gorgeous so im willing to modify it.🤷
I think Lego made a mistake here, this is not based on the Mona Lisa, this is based on "Weird Al Yankovic as Mona Lisa"
Muted Jang pantomiming is my new favorite recurring segment haha. Fun vid as always Jang 👍👍
Mona Lisa looks like Jimmy Carr but with long hair.
Maybe they should have done the Vigo painting from Ghostbusters II instead.
LEGO should have really leaned into their strengths and made a portrait of a minifig-ified version of the Mona Lisa. Maybe it wouldn’t have been perfect, but it’d have been better than…. this
Buy it for the frame and make your own art!
You know what this set's missing to be a standout? The gear mechanism for moving the eyes.
Now that would change everything, lol
As an artist who has actually tried to depict the Mona Lisa in a different medium. (I made this into a sculpture in school) it’s SOOOO difficult to recreate the fine detail of the original. The capture of a slight smile is nearly impossible to create. They did the absolute best they could to be honest
This to me is even creepier than the Lego Chewbacca. The big one, that is.
I see one good thing about it: Unlike many other Lego sets, this one isn't tempting me to spend my limited money on plastic bricks.
And to think that the Gru buildable figure is uncanny. Mona Lisa art now makes me think twice of what Lego was cooking.
My biggest gripe with this set, is that it doesn't come with a Leonardo Da Vinci minifigure. The 'Starry Night" set came with a minifigure of Vincent Van Gogh, why didn't this one follow suit?
Hey it's the Neanderthal Mona Lisa!!! Nothing wrong with a mix of eras! XD
This is the stuff of nightmares! Imagine those beady eyes following you around the room at night!!!
It's as if Picasso had put his own spin on the Mona Lisa. Especially around the 2:50 mark.
I really don't have a problem with this
They didn't even capture her iconic smile.
LEGO did a good deed in creating this thing: The world would have missed out a hilarious video featuring an utterly creeped out Jang otherwise. ;-)
Mona Lisa by Picasso. Why aren't they doing Picasso????
I never seen Jang like this. It's hilarious
Checks date - it's not April 1st is it?
Who at Lego thought this monstrosity was a good idea?
Classic JANG! Came for La Giaconda, stayed for the aesthetic angst 😂
I agree, the face is haunting.
Watch the new horror movie starring Jang in "Five Nights at the Louvre"! 🤣
"Let's go to Paris, I'd like to see Mona Lisa"
"But we have Mona Lisa at home"
Mona Lisa at home:
Looks like Mr Bean had his way with this one
This set should have the face of Brickheadz. The frame, the background - great, but that face scares and spoils to verbal everything!
The frame is fantastic. The body and background are well executed but the face looks like the love child of a human and a minifig
You reacting to the video with the sound off was absolutely hilarious Jang. I love your videos, you always bring me joy
Someone's going to do a moc of Vigo from Ghostbusters and that will be creepy.
LEGO Mona Lisa be like: 🗿
It belongs in an attic, under a cloth, next to the one of Dorian Gray.
Get out of bed at night to pee and you see this! nightmare fuel
Thanks for actually having opinions, and not being afraid to speak them. Keep up the good work Jang!
Just in time for Halloween.
The brow will cast huge shadows over the eyes. It must be why they have lights set up next to/under it in the Lifestyle photos.
After this, Lego should do a Phoebe's "Gladys" creepy picture. They'd nail it.
One of Jang's best "thoughts" videos ever!
It feels like they turned it into that corporate artstyle, the Hokusai wave and the Vincent van Gogh starry night were much more successful
I'm reminded of a line from The Princess Bride.... "Dear God, what is that thing?!?"
I like that you decided to mute the entire recording instead of just the Lego video, it makes your reaction more chaotic
Is it bad I kinda want to see Jang review this more than any other set now? Guys, can we get Jang to review this? I think we need Jang's visceral irl reaction with the build in his studio to form a proper opinion on this set.
"There's something very far in my brain, near the reptilian core, that's repulsed by this". Nice one dude. My amygdala concurs.
No matter the angle, she’ll always be staring you directly into your eyes.
i think the biggest issue this is A: the colours just ARE NOT dark enough. they've tried to make it look like how they figure it originally was, which is not what peoples frame of reference is for the mona lisa. and B: the top left corner of the forehead, with the shading they've tried to paint in on this thing, it's NOT the right angle, makes her look like Marvels Hammerhead.
"Hi, I'm [ ], I have opinions and not everyone's gonna like em' " is such a good intro.
This just screams the “oh no no no *laughter”* vine 😂
No but seriously, this is a nice and even kinda charming effort, the use of colors is beautiful, if a bit simplistic. And the face does look good…from very specific angles 😅
i dont think ive ever heard you go this crazy on a set, and it deserved it. neanderthalisa. think i saw a frame system in the vid though with just axles attaching pic to frame
The Mona Lisa smiles. This one doesn't smile. No wonder it's creepy. Could be effective to help kids behave around Christmas. Imagine that thing staring at you.
Amazing reaction, more of this!
I think these kinds of art lego-ifications have worked well in the past because the styles they were emulating were very vibrant and limited in color already: The Great Wave is a relatively simple looking art style with basic colors, and Starry Night was already painted in mostly very vibrant and clear blocks of color since it is impressionistic. Something like the Mona Lisa is just way too detailed with subtle shifts in color and hue, that any approximation in a limited system like Lego is bound to look "off".
i think they should’ve definitely went for how it looks today and not what it looked originally. it just looks so unfamiliar because everyone knows it as having a greenish tint. the shaping of her body and arms looks really well done though the face is an honest effort. i really think the background is what’s not doing it for me personally
the fingers are almost creepier than the face. like murder mitts. thats what they are
I want it so bad because it’s so horrific and I love it for that
Jang muted makes this the best of his videos... wait that doesn't sound right.
Go for the frame and create your own art with this set.
She looks like Max Headroom.
Very fitting that such an uncanny looking set comes out just in time for halloween
I think there’s a term for when we see a particular art form or art piece crafted into another medium and it does not look appealing.
A famous painting or statue is created. It is an imagined item made by someone and put into the world.
Then when we see this same imagined object, in another art medium (Video game, paper mache’, or in this case, Lego) it turns us off. Kind of weird. Our minds expect this piece of painted artwork, something someone literally made, to specifically look like that thing that someone made.
This is in contrast to seeing a fully live creature made into Lego. A kingfisher bird or cat, we say “yeah that actually looks very good”.
A mountain range or tree in Lego and we say “very well done”.
Love the videos Jang!
As someone else said, I too would like to see LEGO do Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters 2!
It's really not that bad...
Leonardo would be REPLUSED by the fact that Lego had to cheat with their own medium by using printed pieces instead of bricks to make the face
I like the idea of the execution. Stylizing it with the flat colors and geometric shapes makes it much more adaptable to Lego. I think it looks passable, but your disgusted reaction is amazing-
that intro is amazing, always a winner jang!
And now lets watch the intro again.
I had the same reaction at first - but to be honest, looking at it more, it's growing on me. But I'll wait until I actually see it in person before I make my personal judgement on it.
This is my new favourite Jang video
Someone should sneak into the Louvre and put this in front of the real one.
It reminds me of that wall fresco of Jesus that someone tried to "touch up".
You have to admire how they recreated the effect where it feels like she is always looking at you
I just wanna say, the part where you muted the video and was gesturing was hilarious. Did not expect such physical comedy from a Lego first impressions vid. Great job!
The silent waving of the arms and look of exasperation while the promo video plays pretty much sum up everyone's thoughts about this set.
It says in the description on the Lego website u can swap out the eyes for blank pieces for a more abstract appearance, so the set is literally perfect for me
That was the most entertaining set preview I've seen! :D Can't wait for more people react to this set.
Also, since the frame and the painting are easily separable, I can see the frame being highly desired and repurposed for other art pieces, and the Mona Lisa filling being dumped on Bricklink as a part pack.
Nice color assortment. It'll look good in my spare parts drawers.
Yang, I love your reviews. You are always so relaxing to listen to, and in my opinion very objective usually. Between this review and the Tuxedo Cat one, you've made me laugh alot too, I'm not used to seeing these strong reactions in your videos. Additionally funny: you convinced me I needed that cat, but not this one, where before, I was thinking the opposite
"Nice frame."
- Mr Bean
Love this review! Critical and honest.
I had the same first impression. Creepy! Everything else about the set is nice. Great effort. But the heart of the Mona Lisa painting is "the face" and this just doesn't work as the Mona Lisa. I think this is one set Lego should have scrapped if they couldn't fix the face.
Where's that random shorts youtuber who claimed they were gonna bring back chrome gold pieces for this set? Told ya they wouldn't! 😂
Just buy a print and glue or adhere to fit in the beautiful Lego frame. Magnifique!
Glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought... Vigo! 😂
It might not be a great rendition of the Mona Lisa, but the way the face shifts with every angle makes this a _great_ living painting. Slap a Harry Potter label on it and beef up the summer wave, it's a win-win Lego, hit me up.
Not even Redd would sell you this. Your reaction to it was hilarious!
I feel like this is an example of a set that, on a technical level, the mosaic background, the frame texture, the shaping on the hands, IS really strong. BUT, technical prowess does not equal good aesthetics or translation. Like you can look at it and tell that's The Mona Lisa™ built in LEGO™, but it doesn't look GOOD. It doesn't look like something you wanna hang on your wall. That said, if it sells poorly and goes on a significant discount, people who need drum lacquered gold pieces are going to have a field day with it.
It looks like Weird Al. . . . I think I need to add this to a rewatch list with the Galador videos 🙂😆
You have to get this for review Jang! The assembly and review videos would be comedy gold!
It's a portrait of the elephant man
This could be the best Jang video I have ever seen 😂
Looks like Rocky from the movie MASK
My initial reaction is the word ‘Nerm!’ And that’s not even a word. My second reaction is in response to Jang’s reaction. It looks like the Mona Lisa took someone’s face and is wearing it as her own face.
My favorite Mona Lisa fact is that she's SUPPOSE to have eyebrows, but some restoration effort wiped them off.
It feels like the eyes follow you
Hilarious! Funniest video I’ve ever seen you do and spot on.👍
Hahahahaa. Haven't seen jang in this much janguish in a while
