I'm currently studying graphite in art school and was feeling completely lost cause I'd never really thought of graphite as an art medium itself and only ever used it for sketching. This video was super helpful and it made me excited to try more techniques with my newly bought graphite pencils. Thank you so much for sharing! =)
I really appreciate all the work and hours you put into this video. It's very informative and entertaining. As a returning artist, I want to say thank you for reminding me of things and showing me new stuff I had no idea about. Thanks
I clicked on the video to learn more about different types of pencil, and I feel like I saw weeks worth of drawing courses in 20 minutes. Awesome. P.S. one additional blending method: it's not professional but I went through the entirety of my childhood blending with just my index finger.
Bad idea. Your skin contains oils which can affect the way the paper takes the graphite or how it allows erasing. Use a blending stump or put a tissue over your finger.
I use a tissue like Kleenex over my finger for blending. I use a big fluffy makeup brush for eraser crumbs, or a small ostrich feather duster. I love my little Tombow eraser! I use an electric pencil sharpener, mostly because its so fast, and I am impatient! I always start with the eyes, too. Its nice to see them looking at me as i complete the rest of the drawing. I almist feel that we are friends by the time i finish the drawing. You can reduce the graphite shine by using a matte spray fixative. This is a very helpful video! Thank you!
Thank you so much, this video is the perfect whistle-stop tour of graphite drawing: detailed but concise. Really appreciate the thought that has gone into making it. I am a beginner and have been lost on where to start, and these simple tips and techniques are perfect foundations to practice before getting into the heavier stuff. Cannot thank you enough!
I seriously can't belive this only has four thousand views! I know you are going to go far with this channel, very professional, clear and concise. Thank you very much!
Well I have been through a great deal of videos. This was very helpful. I usually am a painter/ water color artist. Being color blind has been my wall as the wife will tell me what color next by picking them for me. I've decided to go to graphite sketching to which will help me be free of asking what color. I just ordered a full set of graphite pencils and can not wait to exercise your video. Thank you so much.
What a wonderful drawing. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge on how to use graphite pencils. Just what I need. It will be so much easier and fun to make a drawing after watching this video. Ann from Norway
Black Pencil!!!! GENIOUS! Thank you so much for sharing this video- this has helped me massively. I make graphite pencil/watercolour hybrid pieces and was convinced I could only sell prints because I was burnishing my graphite pencil to try to get some dark blacks. Of course, this ruined the drawing and made it extremely reflective! So I’ve been scanning in my drawings and bringing back the darkness using Adobe. But now I see that it is possible!! Thank u tonnes!
That's why I made this video, to share everything I know and help other artists. Honestly I was doing the same things like you a few years ago, I almost gave up graphite because the frustrations were too much and my photos always looked so faded.
An eraser shield is one of those things that can be handy too. Although I suppose they take a bit of practice for exact placement of those highlight spots and picking the right masking shape? I don't see too many people using them while drawing in how-to videos. Some drawing kits still seem to include them. It's also good this video gives scrap paper some mention for cleaning blending tools, because some neglect to do that. (Ditto for dealing with loaded erasers too.) And obviously a clean piece also comes in handy to protect things if you're the type to rest your hand while drawing. And fine sandpaper or emery cloth can also be handy, if not helping to shape some pencils past the usual sharpeners, a clean bit of sandpaper can also rough up blending stumps to make them more fuzzy/softer if desired. Last but not least, is that a painter's brush (the kind you find at a hardware store - as opposed to typically smaller artist's brushes) with long enough bristles can be used in lieu of an artist's erasing brush if you go light on the pressure while sweeping with it. It's an option if online ordering isn't always convenient, as some stores don't always carry a wide selection of art supplies.
Thank you so much for doing this vieo. I am inspired to drawer as a hobby and following that passion so this helps me get to my goal of drawing because i love it
Thank you for this in-depth beginner tutorial! God knows I need it right now in AP Art class because I can't just use the media I'm good at in every art piece I'm making for the portfolio.
Thank you so much for the video, you are an amazing artist, I'm truly honoured to be present in this era where artist like you exist... I do have one question if you mind answering does black pencil work ON the graphite shading?
I wish there were a way to attach a photo to my post so I could get some honest feedback and critique. Several years ago, I took a drawing class and really enjoyed it but it’s been so long ago, I’m starting from from scratch. Thank you for this helpful video.
Damn dragos… wish there was a download button! So humbly informative!! By the way, with someone with ONLY 4b pencils and cotton buds… (I could do all this too?)
Question, Why when teaching for Beginners you did NOT start with a Light circle/oval for the head, and for the body. and divide where the center of beak is sort goes with line of the eye. which usually falls in the center. INSTEAD you started out with a semi tracing of your completed bird? Doing this encourages beginners to FORGET doing circles, but put tracing paper over you completed bird , and go over their TRACING OF YOUR BIRD ONTO THEIR PAPER , having a far better non learning, on their own to do a bird they see that is NOT a photo or drawing..?

I also used to use my finger to blend but sometimes I left stains because of the
oil of the fingers.
I still do lol but yes I will try his way next time
