  • For this episode of Stimming's 15 Minutes with … series, we take a closer look at the Moog Grandmother, a semi-modular analog synthesizer with a built-in arpeggiator, sequencer and spring reverb tank.
Here Stimming experiments with this relatively new addition to cult favourite Moog’s synth repertoire, released in 2018 the Grandmother merges together the sonic possibilities of semi-modular synthesis within its signature robust hardware framework and keys. The monophonic synthesiser can be played immediately with no patching required while It’s reconfigurable front panel allows users to dive deeper. Enjoy!

I think this is the happiest I've seen Stimming during a fiddle around with a synth, not because other gear doesn't have its perks, but because the Grandmother never takes Stimming out of the flow - the momentum. He rides the momentum of both limitations and possibilities with the Grandmother and it's non-stop fun, which is the holy grail of a what a musician looks for: to stay in the flow of creativity. Great video!

The Matriarch is a contemporary classic. So is the Grandmother. But the Matriarch just has such a great tool kit. Especially if you use Eurorack at all. It’s amazing and so fast to use. And four oscillator bass sounds? Forget it. Pick a small kickdrum because your bassline is gonna be huge. Started with the GM and had to step up to the Matriarch because i got addicted. 😂

I really liked the filter and some things with the sequencer, but it wasn't enough for me, it has good moog bass sounds that remind me of the model 15, but that's it, I didn't like using it for precusions, although it does a lot good drone sounds.

The only flaw in the Grandmother/Matriarch is having the keyboard CV/gate outs /Euro outs/etc. (worse on the Matriarch) on the back panel and not even labeled on top. The CV and gate outs are on the front panel in the ARP/SEQ module. The euro out is on the back, but I usually patch directly between the GM modules and my rack modules anyway unless I want to run the whole output through a module like Beads (or a bunch of other ones I don't have yet). You can patch the LFO to your rack's VCA or filter, you can patch your rack oscillator into the GM's filter, etc. with no need for the Eurorack out.
