  • I've wanted one of these for years and while looking for something else found this one on Big Ship Salvage bigshipsalvage... - they were up front and noted that it needed work.
    It's actually in very good condition. When it arrived I did some basic cleanup and replaced six of the bolts on it. I found a gear whose taper pin had sheared off and the good people at Langills Precision CNC langills.com/ got it replaced perfectly. There were also a few issues with the shutter/muffler assembly and some detailed cleanup and replacement of a small part resolved that issue.
    The gears and some of the bolts were lubricated with marine grease and the siren was assembled and everything worked great!
    This particular siren appears to date to around 1938-1944. The wood handle is original to the machine.

      Thank you, David! I've wanted one of these for years and accidentally came across one in a place where I wasn't looking! I'm planning on doing another video on the dissassembly, restoration, and reassembly of the siren.

    Tried this out at midnight. Neighbours loved it so much they were banging on my door and screaming with joy. Even the police wanted to join in.

    My dad had one of these in his garage (he served in WWII) and when we were kids my friends and I used to crank on that thing. It had high and low notes, like a “siren”, not one steady note like this one

      My Grandpa had one. Korean Vet. it had a baffle/vent thing that you could open and close and it would really bellow when you opened the slots.

      I got a small version of these just yesterday.
      It’s more like the standard hand cranks,because it has a little handle

    I always thought all sirens needed an electric speaker!

      Nope, this one is very old. It was built between 1938 and 1944 and it's 100% hand cranked! No batteries required and it makes a heck of a lot of noise!

      I don't know about the autocorrect - it's not a setting in You Tube so far as I know.

    Is this the UK is this what air raid wardens used ?

    • @GoldRushMedia2023
      @GoldRushMedia2023  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it is! While I am unsure of the manufacturer of my siren I've found it is identical to the clutchless Carter-Secomak sirens manufactured in the UK from 1938 through 1943 (possibly even later). But at the outset of the war in 1939 this would have been a very common model in use throughout the UK. The clutchless aspect of this siren was its flaw. The handle keeps spinning as long as the blower spins and if you try to slow it down with the handle you can easily shear off the pins holding the gears together. Thus you see me let go of it once I have it going.
