Raccoon family in the hollow log den

  • One of our mama raccoons moved her 5 pups into the hollow log den in early June 2020. They stayed for nearly a week and then moved to the West Den, which is a little more spacious. We were thoroughly entertained by watching them, and we hope you will be, too.
    The mother went out each night and also sometimes during the day (it was pretty crowded in the log, and we sympathized with her desire for some peace and quiet). Most of the time, though, she was in the log with the pups, nursing them, nibbling on them, and keeping them neat and clean. Like all the raccoon families we've been lucky enough to be able to watch, they were playful, happy looking, and endlessly patient with each other.
    In the West Den the pups have room to run around and spread out a little. They still prefer to sleep on top of each other in a big furry pile, but when they're awake they practice their climbing and acrobatics skills. If we can capture some good video, we will produce a sequel and add it to our website (TexasBackyardWildlife.com).

      They truly are. They are smart, they are curious, and they're very sweet (unless you're abusing them). They jump up onto our laps on the deck so they can explore what's on the table. They know us and recognize us, and we know and recognize them. The relationship we have with the raccoons is totally different from the relationships we have with the other critters.

      A Neighbor used to leave her garage doors slightly open, and fall asleep. Raccoons would go thru them to the back of the property thru her place. She moved.
      One night we thought someone was knocking at our front door. We opened the door, and a family of raccoons were on the steps growling and hissing as tho' asking WHY the neighbors doors were shut. 😊
      Funny creatures.
      Thanks for showing us what they do in their nest.

      We have security cameras set up all over our property so that we can watch the wildlife. We created this den out of a huge hollow log and put a camera in it when we were setting it up. The raccoons and foxes constantly explore everything - they're extraordinary - and we knew it wouldn't take long for them to figure out that the log was hollow and would make a safe, dry home. We were delighted when the raccoon family moved in. They were such fun to watch. None of the animals seem to be bothered by the cameras, although they do lick them from time to time which somewhat spoils the video!

    Do you find optimal environments near you and then set up your camera or are any of your video areas staged and made by you"? I love your videos!🧡!

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  3 роки тому +2

      It's a mixture of both, really. In this case, a neighbor gave us the hollow log and we set it up with a camera inside, a little light, and another camera outside. Most of the time we're just putting cameras along busy trails and in or around natural dens, but some of the dens and all of the bird boxes were made by us.

    I want to talk about the “jackhammer” behavior as the raccoon kits were nursing.....this is a very common mammalian nursing behavior! Some may hammer really hard (lambs, kids [goats], foals, deer, calves, and raccoons, etc) and kittens and puppies (domestic and wild) push and scratch as they nurse. Why?? _Because they’ve drained that breast and they want more milk!!_ When the babies, push, claw, or hammer, more milk production is stimulated, and they get to keep filling those bellies! When they were infants, my sons actually pushed against me from time to time when they were nursing, but they did NOT jackhammer, lol!

      I grew up on a sheep farm and the lambs would almost punch the ewes when they were nursing - it looked painful sometimes. The baby raccoons amuse us because it's such a rapid movement - they look like little road construction workers.

    Where did she have her babies that she had to move them?

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  3 роки тому +1

      We don't know where the babies were born. Aren't they beautiful, though? The raccoons and the foxes move their families quite frequently. Maybe the fleas get bad after a while? We had a fox family here last year who moved from den to den almost every day. They had itchy little fox feet.

      @@TexasBackyardWildlife This behaviour is common in meerkat families too. Supposedly, it helps them to avoid large predators. Fleas and ticks is a good hypothesis too. My guess, it is both and maybe something else.

      I don't remember now to be honest. 4 or 5 hours, though, probably. When the babies are really small the mama won't take them with her. By this time of year they're quite big and they're all running around after their mamas now. They are extremely cute.

    • @TexasBackyardWildlife
      @TexasBackyardWildlife  11 місяців тому

      Raccoons are wonderful little creatures and not at all dangerous (though they will defend themselves if they're attacked and they have sharp teeth). They are very intelligent, and extremely inquisitive. They investigate everything. We love living with them here. When we sit out on our deck in the evening, the raccoons come and go, hoping that I will give them a peanut or two (which I always do).
