- This day of kayak fishing ended on a very high note. I was not expecting to catch a striper this size in the middle of the day in August, and I didn't even have my 1st person camera on when it happened. Earlier in the morning I searched some boulders for sea bass then moved to a ledge for fluke. Could not find much on the ledge so pushed out a bit further for seabass. On the way in, I just took one drift over a good-sized boulder with the 5.5" Elias shad, not expecting it to actually work! I left the fight uncut so you can see how quickly I brought her in, and on very light gear too. tidal coefficient 77

haha thanks Paul, only bc the current was close to slack. the 8lb braid helps, that and the whiptail shad has little resistance in the water. just thankful i got her in and she swam off good in the warmer water 🙏

Amazing bass, always trust your instincts. Nice to hear that you tell yourself the same things I do when a nice fish gets away. "He was probably foul hooked" or it was probably just a fiesty short. I know it helps me sleep better at night. 😂
hahaha Bob, thats hilarious. It so true, that one fish was a def a good one but I kept playing it down in my head exactly like you said. 😅 that bass was using that boulder as the leeward side blocked the fast current, it was textbook

perfect release bro. The one thing that is so upsetting about the slot size is some of the cows don't always revive after a long-fought battle in the current, being gut hooked from inhaling a bunker chunk, etc etc. You did that perfect and nice catch. 46 inch probably 36lbs
Agreed! That’s the plus to an artificial and being on a kayak is you really can chase them down or manuver around as needed. For some reason this one gave up quick but I’m happy she did so the reviving process was much shorter. I’m with ya though, the inability to keep a big fish in the event it’s gut hooked is not ideal, especially for chunking. Thanks for the weight estimate, good to know
@@PeterRanieriII Yeah it's tough when someone we take fishing catches the fish of a lifetime (aka 40+) its tough to not boat it for pics so as to keep it alive. But then again maybe the slot size reg is why we are catching so many monsters on the Sound This year? Who knows? Whatever the case This is our best North shore season in forever so the complaining is at a minimum lol. Keep up the good work my arms and legs get tired watching you paddle all over the sound!
it really was the best year I've had in the sound for bigger stripers too, maybe the slots are helping, maybe the fish are just moving around differently, who knows lol, but I'm def ok with it continuing in this direction. Yea the slot hurts the charters the most I think and the scenario your talking about not even being able to take it out for a quick pic, thats tough. thanks 🤙
Pete, stop stealing all the sea bass off of those boulders, i plan on fishing over there next week once the wind dies down. This past weekend fishing for stripers in the sound i had 3 fish from 33-39 inches, 3 fish from 40-44 inches, 5 fish 45-49 inches, and 1 fish right at 50 inches which was the biggest striper i had ever seen.
haha Miles I left you some for sure. Thats crazy man on the stripers, way to go. The stripers just get so much bigger with every inch it seems after like 44" - thats an amazing weekend seriously! I have no doubt you be able to find the seabass if your able to find stripers like that lol

Hey Paul, thank you and its very cool to hear from a non-angler that clicked on my video. Recently, about 1-2 years ago, NY state implemented a slot size requirement to keep striped bass meaning it has to be within 28"-31" in order to keep it and you can only keep one. So this fish was actually too big to keep legally. But even in the years prior to this law I never really kept big ones since they are breeders and they don't taste as good as the smaller fish.

Is there a reason why you keep messing with your drag? Do you need new washers? As far as sea bass in the sound go, yes, nothing like they used to be but looks like they’re making a comeback. Of the hundreds I’ve caught over the years (mostly wrecks off the south shore) my PB was just under 6 pounds. It was absolutely beautiful, I remember it well. Mount Misery shoal, circa 1978...😢
@@josephmunch724 it’s a very valid observation. I really don’t know why I’ve picked up this habit last few years. I think the super light line 8lb test making me want to adjust according to the fish. I do think with light setups it’s worth adjusting depending on the fish throughout the fight as they get higher off the bottom to let it be a bit looser but I prob do it too much. That’s pretty awesome to hear about them being around back then like that. Haha at least you have that memory

Definitely liked how the jigging worked on the SB, they are, to me anyway, the best eating fish (along with tautog) we have available locally. Thirty years ago, when my buddy got his boat, we started wreck fishing off Fire Island. There was a 100 fish bag limit, which was easily filled if you kept the small ones. We didn’t bother with anything shorter than say 13” or so, and would usually take 40-50, then spend the rest of the day processing. They also make outstanding fish stock.
Now, what is it, 5? (I haven’t checked the regs) which is equally absurd. I really hope things balance out at some point.
Anyway, I’ve subscribed, do you have any video showing your rig setup? Looks like so much fun.

Hey Steve, this outing was a little east of northport but yes you would be fishing very similar bottom over there. Wherever you move to I promise you will catch fish as long as you study super specific local places near you!
yes I agree the creation of Fish Finders has given everyone to learn about the contour of the bottom and to also see lines which represent some kind of movement = some kind and size of fish

for real, its head was so massive lol. Yeah man I thought the same thing, she tired very quickly. I think its the low oxygen in the warmer water. she surfaced right in the beginning of the fight which was interesting as well

I love this little motor. For the price that it cost me to set up, it’s amazing and helps me get around easier but I did have to do some tinkering. I do have plans on getting an xi3 though…

@@pastapaul150 I mean it depends on the weather of course but typically the weather windows are easier to predict in the western sound so I’m pretty comfortable there going 5+ miles offshore, but in the middle sound maybe 2 or 3 miles and the eastern sound less than 1. The eastern sound I’m not very familiar with and the wind seems to pick up quicker

the hobie compass 2021 and the passport 10.5' 2021 are the 2 that I have. The passport is kept at my parents place, that's why i use it there a lot more, its much easier to launch off that beach

thanks, yea I've never tried that area but always thought it would be a good place for fluke. You have that big ledge there with the river outflow seems ideal, thanks for letting me know! Just tough for me these days to explore new places, wish I had more time!
Are there special beaches to launch from or can I just go to any north shore public spot and send off
if you can find a public access beach on the north shore then yes you can just typically launch from there. They may have certain areas that they prefer you to launch (like not if front of roped off swimming areas) but yeah in general any beach will public access will do.
