  • This is definitely one of the greatest prizes I ever gave away in my career. On June 1, 1991, KOME listeners won the chance to sing live on stage with the Doobie Brothers during their final encore song, "Listen to the Music". Here's how it happened.
Through our affiliation with Pat Simmons when he was on our live "Breakfast Club" show (also here on my channel, "South City Midnight Lady"), we came up with the idea of having our Blazy and Bob Show listeners call in and audition for a chance to sing at the concert. It appears there were 12 winners, along with Bob, our live band the Blazers. When Pat did our live show, he mentioned this idea. I told him I played guitar and he invited me to take part in the afternoon soundcheck. Doobies drummer Mike Hossack told my best friend, Dennis Coulter, drummer of the Blazers, that he could play his drum kit that night, too! (The Doobies use two drummers.) You can see me far right with my Fender Strat, and Dennis on the drum set to the right. We were both at the soundcheck. That's where the other drummer allowed Dennis on his, and Michael still on the kit to the left. (Bob is singing in front of Dennis' drums in the full shot.).
All of the listeners also won KOME t-shirts. A funny thing happened during the slower part of the song. A few of the guys broke ranks and stepped up right next to Tom Johnson's microphone. You can clearly hear one of them almost taking over the lead vocal. (There's a close up at 2:54.). There might have been some alcohol involved there, too. Those guys stayed there the rest of the song. The picture here seems to have been taken when the band comes in after the vocals only, maybe around 4:22.
One of the first times I was ever on the radio as a teenager, I did a character voice over the phone for a nighttime DJ's show in OKC. The joke was about "The Captain and Me" album cover from the Doobie Brothers. I never would've imagined that I'd one day PLAY WITH the Doobie Brothers live onstage, along with Bob, our band, and radio listeners that were getting their own rock and roll experience of a lifetime! I'm so glad after all these years to share the audio that was provided to us from the Doobie's sound guy. I hope they discover this video and enjoy themselves all over again. Let me also mention the Doobies' Tiran Porter, who was getting a good laugh over the entire thing. Yes, radio contests and stunts were silly. But this one turned out to be priceless.
A huge thanks to Doobies manager B.R. Cohn, Pat Simmons, and the Doobie Brothers for allowing all of us to be a part of that homecoming Bay Area tour finale!
Special thanks to Ron Nenni and Dave Wohlman, without whom, things like this wouldn't have been possible.
Thanks to the many KOME listeners that made this possible just by rocking along with KOME, San Jose and the Bay!
