Got this from a forum and I think he pretty much hit the nail on the head.
The song is about Dream Theater and their influence on progressive rock. The first 13 and a half minutes of that song sound very similar to pink floyd, yes, genesis, the beatles, and many other progressive rock pioneers. This is done on purpose, considering that they started the genre, so Dream Theater started the song by playing their music very much like their influences - "i never wanted to become someone like him" basically means Dream Theater, when they were young, never wanted to be like their influences because they wanted to be independent. However no matter how hard they try they will end up being just like them in some way, although still original - "Then all I swore that I would never be was now, so suddenly, the only thing, I wanted, to become, to be someone just like him."
The next part of the song is sort of a metaphoric explanation of how Dream Theater became like them, other than that there is not much i can explain.
At about 14 minutes into the song, a strong, very progressive metalish riff comes into play, and that is where the line "Isn't this where we came in?" (sample from Pink Floyd The Wall) is heard. The basic reason for this quote is to explain that at this point in time (around 1989), Dream Theater opened the door to a new genre (Progmetal, for those of you who dont know). Now Dream Theater realizes that they will always be like their fathers, and yet original, so they pay homage to their influences in this section.
Some of the lyrics in this section :
    - Sailing on the seven seize the day tripper, diem's ready
...sailing on the seven seas: OMD song
...seize the day: famous DT line from A Change of Seasons
    ...day tripper: Beatles song
...diem's ready: Carpe Diem from A Change of Seasons
-Jack the ripper, Owen's Wilson Phillips and my supper's ready
...jack the ripper: Judas Priest song
...owen wilson: if you dont know this youre retarded
...phillips and my: not sure lol
    ...supper's ready: Genesis song
-Lucy in the sky with diamond, Dave's not here ive come to save the day
...lucy in the sky with diamonds: Beatles song
    ...daves not here: Yes song
-For nightmare cinema show me the way to get back home again
...nightmare cinema: antonym to Dream Theater, and also a joke band they made with Derek Sherinian (former DT keyboardist)
    ...home: Dream Theater song
-Eugene Gene the dance machine messiah, light my fire, gabba gabba hey hey
...gene gene the dance machine: TV character from the 70-80s
    ...machine messiah: Yes song
    ...light my fire: Doors song
    ...gabba gabba hey: Ramones song
-Hey hey my my generation's home again
...hey hey my my: Neill Young song
    ...my generation: The Who song
...home again: Dream Theater song again
The next part, Intervals, is about the songs on the album Octavarium itself.
I need not explain, just read this:
    1. The Root of All Evil
    Root
Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath
Remove all obstacles from our path
    2. The Answer Lies Within
    Second
    Asking questions
    Search for clues
The answer's been right in front of you
    3. These Walls
    Third
    We try to break free
    Long to connect
Fall on deaf ears with failed muted breath
    4 .I Walk Beside You
    Fourth
    Loyalty, trust, faith and desire
Carries love through each darkest fire
    5. Panic Attack
    Fifth
    Tortured insanity
    A smothering hell
Try to escape but to no avail
    6. Never Enough
    Sixth
    The calls of admirers
    Who claim they adore
Drain all your lifeblood while begging for more
    7. Sacrificed Sons
    Seventh
    Innocent victims for merciless crimes
Fall prey to some madman's impulsive designs
    8. Octavarium
    Octave
    Step after step
    We try controlling our fate
When we finally start living it's become too late
Root second third fourth fifth sixth seventh and octave are musical intervals, thus the name of the section. And all the songs on Octavarium are on different scales spaced interavally: Root of all evil is in F, Answer lies within is in G, These walls is in A, I walk beside you is in B, Panic attack is in C, Never enough is in D, Sacrificed sons is in E, and Octavarium is in F, therefore making that album a full circle.
TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM basically means that the band cannot be different or independent anymore because they have already defined themselves.
    A perfect sphere
    Colliding with our fate
The story ends where it began
Notice the first note in The Root Of All Evil is an F, well the last note in Octavarium is the same F, making it a full circle and saying that the story ends where it began musically as well.
    This song = pure genius

    So you come full circle....

    • @gregmendonca1719
      @gregmendonca1719 4 роки тому +6

The 1st song is Root Of All Evil (ROOT).
The 8th and last song is Octavarium (OCTAVE).
If you listen to the last piano note on the last song (In The Name Of God) on their 7th album (Train Of Thought), it's the same piano note as the beginning of Root Of All Evil on their 8th album. Tying these albums together.
Additionally, if you listen to the static at the end of last song (Scene Nine: Finally Free) on their 5th album (Scenes From A Memory), it's the same static at the beginning on the first song (Glass Prison) on their 6th album (Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence), tying those albums together.

Couldn't find the OP that led me to this reaction, but I wanted to inject some positive on this thread since negativity was spewed.
I found Kel and Rich about a week after my wife filed for divorce. It makes sense our marriage survived hell for a long time, but didn't make it in the end. Your mind, body and soul still goes to a very dark place with the death of a relationship you poured everything into for almost 17 years. From what I've been able to gleen from your channel, both of you were previously married and lost a son. I may not be exact on this but your relationship has actually provided a light at the end of the tunnel. It is an example that sometimes life beats the crap out of you, but there is hope for love, joy and happiness to re-emerge and sprout anew. Keep doing what you do, you are an inspiration to more than you may realize.

Probably the coolest thing about Octavarium is how it fits within the album as a whole. It calls back on musical and lyrical themes detailed in previous songs (this is the last song on the album) and subtly revisits them. Also, the stream of consciousness section in the middle is chock full of song references to a lot of their favorite bands and they flow together almost like word association. Check out some of the information available about how the song and album is all tied together, it’s kinda mind blowing.

Listening to this song is like feeling the arrival of a gentle fairy, and also the appearance of a cruel monster. I am sure God is in all the harmony of Octavarium songs. Quite an emotional song especially the middle section (which is centred round Robin Williams/Robert DeNiro movie 'Awakenings'- which i would advise a watch if not seen). I cry everytime i hear this song. (I am a metalhead of 40yrs listening to the best music on the planet. All genres like your good selves. But a lot of bands still catch me unawares. Anyway great reaction. You guys are great.
    Keep it real
    🤘🤘

Dream Theater - Illumination Theory ( Live From The Boston Opera House )..Is another amazing, moving 20 min Masterpiece...with Choir, Orchestra and 5 distict parts....Awesome! Rich has probably heard it as they play in concert from time to time. But a great, emotional ride ..building..building and Killing it at the end..."what are you willing to live for, die for and kill for?"... Beautiful!

    Nerd facts...
DT will often revert back to older songs with their lyrics sometimes.
This album, Octavarium, isnt a concept album but the songs reference each other a little bit. There are a 8 songs on this album and starting with the first song, The Root of All Evil, the songs move up in octaves. Until they reach the final 8th octave, titled, Octavarium. The first note of, Root of All Evil, is the final note of the last album, Train of Thought. And the beginning of Root of All Evil is the ending to, Octavarium. The song, Octavarium in the middle section towards the end, they give 7 references to the prior songs on that album until they reach the climax of the 8th octave. And finally, this song is about, the band not wanting to become like the other progressive metal/rock bands before them. Not getting in that groove of what it means to be your "everyday progressive band". But throughout the years, it inadvertently, ended up happening anyway.
Ok, I'm done lol I loved your reaction!!!

Hi guys, trust me, one of the KEY performer in terms of accessible screams is Devin Townsend. One of the best vocalist in the world, clean and harsh and emotional.
Easiest songs to access his screaming abilities :
    - stormblending
    - kingdom (live EMGtv)
    - grace live retina circus
    Then mandatory
    - dead head live at Royal albert hall
    - deap peace
    - bastard live royal albert hall

It is so delightful to see Kel's reactions to the orchestra parts in the ending... I think I can imagine her hearing what she played all her life but this time put together with the power and strength she said it always lacked for her.
And it's equally delightful to see you, Rich, always so happy to se her realising she loves metal. I wish I could do reactions like that with my girlfriend, but she thinks metal is too loud haha
You're both lucky to have each other and thanks to let us see a bit of all this love that exists between you.

After hearing Octavarium, please listen to Trial of Tears - I swear this one they play live all the time, but has a bit of Rush beginning. Beautiful lyrics and music that will take you to somewhere else for 13 minutes! Wonderful long solo guitar/ keyboard instrumental section too!

I love the song and your reaction to it. I also kinda like the fact that the end of the previous album is the beginning of this one. The DTalbums from 1999 and to this one are kind of intertwined. Metropolis prt 2: Scenes from a Memory --> Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence --> Train of Thought --> Octavarium

Great reactions so far and I really appreciate your analysis in the end on most of your videos. This particular album has some background story and is quite more complexed than at first glance. Wikipedia explains it better.
"When starting to work on what would become Octavarium, Portnoy noted that it would be their eighth studio album. This sequence mirrored the octave on a musical keyboard: each octave contains eight naturals and five accidentals. Portnoy suggested that they use that concept for the entire album. When writing, the band delegated each song a different key. Sound effects were placed between songs to connect them: for example, "The Root of All Evil", written in F minor, and the following track, "The Answer Lies Within", written in G minor, were connected by a sound effect in the key of F♯ minor. The album's lyrics and song titles featured references to this concept. Portnoy cited the titles "The Root of all Evil" (referring to the musical term "root") and "Octavarium" ("the octave of the octave") as two examples of this. This made the album a cycle in itself, allowing the band to have a clean start with their next album."

Haha you're wonderful. Regarding the screaming i'd say White Cluster by Opeth has a very tasteful ratio, with the overall arrangement being what's focused on most. A truly beautiful composition in my opinion.

One of the best bands to listen to with harsh vocals is Opeth.
The song 'Bleak' is a perfect starting point for those not used to the style (like me at first listen), and it has clean vocals to balance things out.

There is some good screaming in Faith no More because Mike the lead singer sprinkles screams here and there depending on what album your listening to. I'd suggest songs off of "Angel Dust." Alot of great singing and screams when needed.

I used to have a real problem with James LaBrie's voice (it sounded like he was being lazy and frequently half a tone off) but as I hear more Dream Theater (and Rush are no more), I am losing that reservation. This is an awesome song.
