Is Metaphor ReFantazio Persona 6? Or Something More?

- With Metaphor: ReFantazo's demo being right around the corner, I keep seeing a lot of different takes online about people saying that it's a "Persona clone" or "nothing like Persona and people who disagree just don't understand games." I think that while both sides of this conversation have legitimate stances, like with most things I think it's safe to say the truth lies somewhere in the middle. So today I want to look at the ways this game does resemble Persona and event Shin Megami Tensei and why people who make these claims have a lot of ground to stand on, while also pointing out how well Metaphor does to break itself away from these titles. So I really want to answer the question: is Metaphor: ReFantazio just Persona 6? Or something more?
This is a video I have been working on for some time now and since I started working on it, two more videos on this topic have popped up and so if you want to hear some different perspectives on this topic here they are:

I filmed this video a couple weeks back and since then a lot has happened! I you want to see other great videos covering a similar topic from other awesome creators like Nishquik Pops and JohneAwesome I have linked those in the description - So CHECK THOSE OUT TOO! And I want to know: Have you been enjoying demo? And has it changed your opinion on the game at all or just reinforced your thoughts?
Thanks for the shoutout!! 😁😄
@@nishquikpops Of course!
just stumbled on this thanks for the shoutout 🤠🤠
This game is to Persona what Bloodborne was to Dark Souls. And that was a fucking fantastic thing.
This is honestly an incredible comparison.
I know it is super over said but it really feels like this game is to persona what Elden ring was to dark souls. Where it takes elements from all of their games made up to this point and puts all of their best qualities together into its own unique thing. How ever you slice it…I am extremely hype for it. Enjoy the game guys :)
This is the best comparison I love the medieval setting and the break from the high-school bullcrap the game is great
I've seen a lot of "why Metaphor isn't fantasy persona" videos, but I feel like none of then focus on what I think is the most obvious and important difference.
SMT and Persona are both creature collection games like Pokemon. Metaphor isn't, it's a job based JRPG.
To me, this is a massive difference.
@@Creslin321 THIS. I literally had a line in this video calling Persona Pokémon but didn’t want to risk Persona fans yelling at me so I cut it. 😂
@@ThoughtBubbleYTlol I hear yah. To me, SMT and Persona have always seemed heavily inspired by pokemon.
@@Creslin321 smt existed before pokemon
@@rickyhonablue236 fair point! So Pokemon was probably inspired by SMT in that case.
@@Creslin321 More specifically, it was inspired by Dragon Quest V, and Dragon Quest V was inspired by SMT.
Something more. Plain and simple.
I have played the Demo, and I still feel there is more to it than that. Yes, it does take some things from Persona, but it takes from other Atlus titles.
And Archetypes clearly are more than just Personas too and even Demons in SMT. The only major similarities is that they are inspired by Carl Jung.
2:30 the social stats in this game are needed in Will’s goal to gain the support of the people. Which is especially important because, as an Elda, he is the most looked down upon.
The Royal Virtues in this game, unlike in Persona, actually tie in with the story IMO. Because again, these traits are necessary if Will wants to earn the respect and loyalty of the people over Louis.
TRUE
PD: sorry, i just agree completely with u
the funnist thing with the Jungian Psychology element is that within it personas and archetypes are practially opposites.
Persona fans when they realize that P1 and P2 exist: 😰
Also Atlus when they realize that P1 and P2 exist: 😰
@@ThoughtBubbleYT I mean atlus had put out music DLC for the games and the p2EP PSP remaster came out the same year as p4g
@@KatelynTeathey remade 3 before they did 1 and 2, that says a lot
@@Pikaru-c4u there was a lot of demand for a P3 remake even above a P1 and P2 one.
P2 and P3 tied the poll for a remake but reload was already in development by then
@@Pikaru-c4uthey did a survey and made the winner. 2 was tied. 1 was behind that followed by 4. Technically persona 1 and 2 were already remade. The PSP ports are significantly different. Same gameplay but those were technically remade. We needs ports.
They are probably gonna port those.
very nuanced take. much more complex topic than one might initially think.
Thank you! I think it is really interesting because I think there are a lot of opinions that have some pretty decent rationale behind them about the game but people just don’t like taking other people’s perspectives into account.
The main character of metaphor looks like the child of aigis and door kun
Honestly you’re not wrong.
After playing the demo it's truly something else and feels super unique! Can't wait to play more 😎
See after playing the demo I agree it is definitely - full-send it's own thing but I something that surprised me was that that going through dungeons, while visually different, feels SO similar to palaces in Persona 5 Royal down to the safe room functionality. Which isn't a bad thing by any means, it really does feel like they took the best aspects from so many past Atlus titles to create this classic-in-the-making.
Yeah persona fan gonna call every atlus game persona yet ignoring persona 1 and 2😂
I thought Persona started at 3? 🤔
I feel like this is probably about the same convo that was had when Persona spun off from SMT. I think Metaphor is the latest, most polished iteration of both Persona and SMT mechanics, and for me, that's perfectly fine. In fact, it's exactly what I want and expected. Atlus has a way they like to make games, and most people who play their games come to these games for that familiarity and faith that they'll be rewarded with the elements they like to engage with.
That being said, I think the themes, story presentation, character tropes, vibes, and setting are a huge departure for the team, and thats whats really going to elevate this game to the next level. The demo already has way more and better produced FMV's than at least the first half of any Persona/SMT game I've played. I can see some people bouncing off this, but personally, I'm already overjoyed to see this much focus being placed on the narrative. The VA is really good, and as per usual, the non-voiced lines are successfully written in the voices of the characters' personalities.
One thing I think is kind of funny is how in Persona games the MC is the coolest, most handsome guy in school, and so far in Metaphor the MC it utterly reviled and despised (quite shockingly tbh) by pretty much everyone lol
Well, Joker did have negativity behind him, and that’s mainly because of false claims.
Here, everyone hates Will because he’s an Elda, a race which is looked down upon by the king of Euchronia at large.
That being said, not everyone hates Will. In fact, many sympathizes with him and vice versa because they probably went through the same thing. Even if Eldas are the most hated, discrimination is still everywhere even among the non Eldan people
I’ve described is like:
Metaphor is to persona and SMT
As Elden ring is to dark souls and blood borne
Definitly its own thing. Its so awesome, such a combination of everything atlus has done, in a good way. I loved the demo and cant wait for the full game.
The demo was so peak. Two weeks is close but so far.
Refantazio looks stellar even if you're new to persona and smt, I'm sure it'll appeal to all sorts of jrpg fans
I'm really excited to see what its actual reception looks like in a couple weeks!
@ThoughtBubbleYT I'm just excited to get my hands on the game, being a persona fan played into the hype but that trailer in june 2023 is what sealed the deal for me
I think it might be a Persona 5.5, as in Atlus is testing some ideas for Persona 6
I love the game demo, I like the idea of archetypes and music. I like the potential combos you can have with your archetypes. I’m looking forward to the full release, I also like how you can continue if the main character dies.
The fact that the MC dying isn’t an auto game-over is literally so nice.
After having played fully through the demo, it's actually a lot more similar to Persona than I realized based off of the pre-release information. I think it's clear The Atlas would like for us to think of this as its own independent franchise, but at the engine level and thematically, it is more like a fantasy / medieval themed SMT then not. Something akin to the last Bible when compared to main line. We see traditional SMT attack names show up and the antagonist is a Lucifer (Louis is back at it again) stand in. The seeker is a pretty direct analog to t
the fool, as both fit the same Jungian role. Heck you can even have a Jack Frost use tarukaja after getting an additional press turn. Based on the way dev's talked on this going in I was definitely expecting it to be more independent from the rest of the Atlus lineage then is the reality.
I love those games so it's far from a bad thing though 😅
Yeah it is VERY heavily influenced by the other titles. Which I definitely don’t mind, but it’s impossible to ignore.
It’s crazy they made the protag look similar to makoto lmao
I'm an old man. It still takes me so long to remember people are referring to Minato when they say that 😅
I log it under the same way I think of SMT and DDS. There are similarities, but one is doing its own thing apart from the other. I am interested cause it does seem to be more morally grey than persona, but as grey as SMT mainline.
I'm really excited to see where it goes from here!
I've heard a lot of positive responses to the demo so far. That's VERY promising. I agree with you that this is taking the best parts of Persona and applying them to something new, along with importing Digital Devil Saga's battle system and working in traditional RPG classes. I like how they extended P5's "people's voice" system to include the party/class combinations people cleared quests with... but I worry that if there's imbalance, they'll devolve into everyone using the same thing. (Or perhaps worse: most people sticking with the default options even if they're not great, this happened with Fire Emblem Engage's deployment rankings) We'll see.
The comparison in the thumbnail is vile 💀💀💀
didn't even think about the similarities, however their personalities are completely different
But i can see the Makoto one, specially with the 'finger pointing at the air' suicide attack and Metaphor's protagonist doing that same one in the official art
I thought the comparison was so funny that how I could it not be pointed out? LOL
Maybe spoilers from the demo:
Just beat the demo and I swear at the end of it there's a video where the protagonist shouts "Persona mastered" and there was an archetype called Devil Summoner and Jack Frost was there. And also when I looked at the prince injury flashback I think one of the attackers was the Pink Papirus woman (Caterina?) Like wtf is going on here lol. I kind of have to buy the game to find out now lol.
"Dance Masked Dancer!" - Junah Metaphor Refantazio
Truly one of the quotes of all time
If you don't get the reference its to Ann Takamaki's Crit quote
They are showing some new gameplay at yesterday tgs, maybe you can analyze them? Any video about this game is good while waiting for the release date
The things that are most like persona are the "awakening of power" for your party and the velvet room / mores room (can't remember the name). I just wish on a narrative level they could have found a different way to do it. That's my only complaint and it's small
Yeah, there very definite echoes of Persona riddled throughout.
It's a spin off imo. It's definitely doing It's own thing with the characters and story, but it has to many of Personas gameplay mechanics to not draw that connection. I like it personally. It feels familiar while also being new and fresh.
I don’t know that I would call it a spin-off but it’s definitely HEAVILY inspired by the work they’ve done with Persona. I think it’s wild that some people refuse to admit that people who draw those parallels have pretty solid rationale for it.
@@ThoughtBubbleYT I still haven't beaten the game, but having played more I still say this game is a spin off of Persona. In the same way Persona used to be a spin off of SMT. It's doing it's own thing, but still tied to it's origins. Given that it's a job based rpg system and not a creature collector like SMT or Persona.
I'm calling it now the main protagonist is going to be with Gallica o-o
Just based on the demo, it feels quite different as you don't have that school schedule dictating everything. It ends up more like an RPG with a time limit. It especially feels like Final Fantasy before it became more futuristic with a lot of great Atlas systems.
And I say this as someone who found SMT V to feel like Persona with all the interesting bits shaved off in a way SMT IV didn't thanks to the school setting and interactions with classmates. SMT is the Future franchise, while Persona is the Present franchise (with Metaphor making a play for the Past franchise), and SMT V blurring those lines with an illusionary present day location moved into Persona territory and kept making me want more Persona mechanics instead of being a pure SMT experience.
I really enjoy the freedom of doing what you want to do during the day without something like school being a constant anchor. It feels very freeing.
It's Digital Devil saga with some persona mechanics.
I like metaphor better because its not highschool life. Tho the whole afternoon night thing makes it seem stagnant. Like i got 9 days of that before taking on the dungeon instead of other rpgs where you move to the next story beat. I still enjoy it for what it is lol
I’m tired of this . we never say Red dead is gta western clone. Stop this nonsense
Fair enough. I agree it's not a clone! But a lot of people pretend they don't understand why people compare the two which is equally head scratching.
Yes we do it is a just western gta, just like how elden ring is just open world dark souls. Metaphors is persona 5 with devill summoner and smt sprinkled in and thats great
It’s okay, at least we got something to talk about until the game is out, it’s a pain to wait
@@_CrimsonBlade Not as much as this game. Stop this
it's like shin megami v and persona 5, but different
It isn’t
It own thing
While persona is slower and more character focused
Metaphor just drops you in and leave you to understand all of it
Idk I'd say as for the combat system to me it feels more like digital devil saga then persona. I can understand the comparisons but I feel the game is more similar to smt then persona
Is it called Persona 6? No. So bad title. But good content as always.
I dunno, I think the title asks the question posed in the video pretty well, so I’m overall happy with it! And thank you so much!
The most derivative original IP I've seen. If any other company made this, no doubt Atlus would sue.
Have you seen Pokemon?
I want to play full game so much. But I'm too poor to spend 60 dollars on the game 😔
Played demo, it was amazing, I'm really hooked up
That’s fair. Hopefully you can save up to get it in the future,

Twitter discourse is that the writing and story is garbage
I haven’t played the demo but I hope it’s not that bad…
I been hyping this up lol
I feel pretty safe in saying the writing is not garbage. I’ve actually been very impressed with how good I’ve thought it has been so far. Definitely give it a shot yourself, but don’t let Twitter get to you!
Whenever a new game is coming out it gets hate. That's the way it is. Plus it's twitter, the vocal minority. The minority will pray on the downfall of everything
@@rickyhonablue236 Truer words have never been spoken.
Garbage? Not even close lol those twitter nerd are the same people who love garbage stories like elden ring a game with zero story or characters
People that shit on this game's writing probably frequent deviantart or furaffinity as their main source of literature rofl. They are literal armchair writers that have no idea what world building, theming, or foreshadowing is.
Metaphor excels at all of these things btw. I think the Metaphor devs got an actual writer to do the story this time around like they did with DDS.
Don’t care how good it is, since Atlus will try to sell it at full price with a Royal or golden version a year later. I’ll wait 5 years or longer if I have to until it’s half price or lower for the FULL VERSION. Had enough of paying Atlus twice for the same F’in games. Persona fans you enabling and screwing up Atlus just like Bethesda fans screwed up Bethesda, just like BioWare fans screwed up BioWare, etc. NO THANKS, ATLUS! I have no FOMO for a turned based slow singleplayer JRPG. It can wait.
No!
Persona 6 will be much better than this.....
Metaphor it's just another "meh" JRPG that will be forgotten in 1 year!
Well. That definitely is a take. I can’t agree that it is either “meh” or will be forgotten, but I can totally see why someone who likes the vibe of Persona might not be as into it.
Played the demo. Hated it. Idk why a modern game looks worse than a game from several years back. And I saw nothing in the demo’s story that made me want to play it. To each their own
I'm sorry you didn't like! I personally really loved it, but like you said: to each their own! I'm glad you found out before you spent any money on it!
I love how it look i hate photo realistic graphics and how could you hate the story we only got to see the prologue 😂😂 you’re probably a last of us fan what not enough gay characters to relate too?
@@_CrimsonBlade This is such a weird comment. I’m guessing this gay stuff lives in *your* head rent free
@@ThoughtBubbleYT yeah that’s fine, I don’t know why having an opposite opinion about a piece of media has to be confrontational. I’m sure it’s a good game, it’s just not for me
@@Dank_Engine For sure, like different people have different tastes. And that’s fine. Too many people try to make it way bigger of a deal than it is.
