    One thing that I liked about this scene is that, when later on you discover the pilot is a civilian volunteer engineer, it makes sense the shift of Chief's attitude towards him. At first, Chief is the strong silent type: he treats the pilot the same as he would to any other soldier. He orders him to follow his instructions, doesn't listen too much to the pilot's concerns, reminds him about their duty as soldiers and stays silent (or sometimes, directly ignores) the pilot's questions and efforts to talk to him. My guess is that, it's because Chief's thinks he's a soldier, he expects the pilot to be prepared, both fisically and mentally, to act cording to the military training he's supposed to have received. That's why I think he tells him "Enough" with an imperative tone in his voice when the pilot is complaining about the situation. "It's your job. You're a soldier. Suck it up and behave and do as you're expected to".
    However, once Chief's gets to know that the man in front of him is not a soldier, nor even a trained pilot, and sees him break down and fall to his knees and cry, Chief realizes he's not dealing with a frustrated soldier but with a desperate and scared civilian who has endured a hell that he was probably aware of to some extent, but not trained to withstand. And then, Chief's changes his attitude and talks to him with a little bit more of touch while encouragung him to keep going. This scene was good.

    “How have you ever failed?”
    Ironically, for the first time really ever, we witness Chief completely fail in the opening scene against Atriox. Completely beaten and broken and tossed to the void. This pilot saves chief, and in the process humanity, and it takes Chief to remind him of that.
    Thanks John, it’s been a rough year. Never thought I needed a Spartan to tell me it’s okay to fail.

    • @zacharygilmore1075
      @zacharygilmore1075 3 роки тому +121

      And yet he does open up to the Weapon about this later. I've never heard Chief sound so defeated against a single enemy, like Atriox is suddenly this force on par with Gravemind.
      Yet Chief will fight him again anyway, even knowing how he had been completely outclassed. And that's courage.

      @BleedingUranium 2 роки тому +11

      @@_spooT Yeah, John using those two as his activation codes/passwords was incredibly fitting. And it also serves another purpose: My using Samuel's name, he's forcing himself to remember the first friend/Spartan he lost, as he contemplates killing his current companion. It forces him to acknowledge the weight of what he's doing.

I think it’d be really cool if one day, long in the future when they finally send him off, they finally show him breaking down if for a moment. His first encounter with the flood shook him to his core. As it would any man. All the dead marines he passes by saddens him deeply - especially the ones that die specifically for his cause. He’s been seeing human planets be glassed, wiped off, billions of people exterminated, countless deaths, countless kills for years now. No amount of augmenting will overpower that.

      For me, it was in Halo 4 when one of the terminals during one of the later missions blows up and Chief isn't able to extract Cortana from it, causing him to yell out for her in a very concerned tone. And then of course, that gut-wrenching ending with Cortana sending Chief back to Earth after he detonated the nuke. The pain in his voice is so incredible.
      All that being said, Halo Infinite is also great at further humanizing Chief and making him more relatable.

    This scene is even more sad when you find out more later in the story. Fernando Esparsza was a civilian volunteer engineer if I recall, and when he found out chief had “died” to Atriox during the attack he got scared and ran and stole the pelican because of how much of an unkillable hero to humanity reputation chief had/has, and thought if chief had died, they were all doomed. He was mostly correct, in that they were doomed, but chief wasn’t really dead. When he says he belongs in there, he means the wreckage of the ship dead with the rest of his crew mates he essentially feels like he abandoned out of fear. That’s why he says he should be left with the rest of the garbage. He feels like a coward who shouldn’t have lived, and doesn’t deserve to be alive while his crew he left to die. Makes it even more heartbreaking when you combine that with the fact that he saved one bullet for his pistol he gave to chief at the beginning of the game. A bullet he most probably meant for himself. Without finding out chief had lost to atriox, he wouldn’t have run and would have stayed and died, and without him running, chief would have never been picked up and saved. They’re both alive because of each other in twisted ways. This game’s story wasn’t perfect, but damn if there weren’t some really, really good strong points.

    Dude this scene made my eyes water and have a shaky voice just because it really hit home for me. I don’t really care how cheesy, dumb and childish it is for what I’m gonna say, but man seeing this really meant a lot to me.
    Master Chief has literally been my childhood hero since the day I very first played Halo 3 when I was in 1st grade; it was my very first true game I had played too and spent a lot of time on. I just now finished my 3rd semester in college now and I’m about to turn 20 soon. Although he’s very quiet and faces a million challenges that don’t seem like he could handle, he will always get the job done and that’s why I’ve always felt like I could be him, or sometimes am like him. However in reality, we aren’t of course, and seeing the pilot break down into pieces for owning up to what he’s done and how he feels about himself to someone he considers and is near-perfect, MC is still human too, no matter how different he is socially, emotionally, and physically.
    I think growing up now has made me realize the challenges I faced in the past, currently, and in the future and those failures hurt a lot, especially when it cuts deep or puts you in a severe problem; it feels like you’re the one at fault or nothing is in your favor, and that’s where I can feel the same emotions as the pilot, especially being scared.
    But when this scene played out, and hearing Master Chief saying that quote of making mistakes broke me. Hearing him say that literally felt like he had said THAT to my face and reminding me that it was okay to fuck up or have something bad happen and feel hurt or scared, but the fact is we gotta keep going somehow to reach the better aspects.
    Sorry this was a lot to whoever reads this; it is pretty weird since it is just a game and a character; it was obviously directed to the pilot, but I don’t know… hearing a person who is one of the most perfected, as well as flawed humans to exist in the Halo universe, and being my childhood hero, it was heart-warming to hear him say this.
    It felt more like a reminder to me directly, especially now as an adult, that it’s okay to hurt, be scared and even fail; just the one thing is you gotta keep going and do what you can to make right or better.

    I am both happy and sad I watched this.
    Sad because it's a spoiler and I've only got 2 days left before I get to play this game...
    But happy, because this was so heartfelt. I honestly wanna know more about Echo 216 now. Knowing he's who he is... Just understanding that he's just, someone who wants to go home. I think that hit me the hardest, since in times like he's living... home and comfort is all anyone ever wants. To see the emotion of him giving up like that, and Chief renewing what little hope is left is what makes this 4 minute scene so impactful.
    No more spoiling for me... but damned if I wasn't happy I watched this. Gosh it feels wonderful to have that normal human touch to these sci-fi moments. Just a regular person, scared out of their minds and wanting to just, head home. It gives a renewed interest as Chief to push through and make the reality of home.

      so ye...its not that I want to say that I do care about multiplayer side of Halo more now than campaign but I have to be honest with myself. I likely wont be playing Halo Infinite campaign for long while yet because I would have to catch up with story first and multiplayer is free2play anwyay so thats why I do care more at the moment how they are going to improve and expand multiplayer side more

    THIS is how you develop master chiefs character. Not a brooding machine like 4, 5 and even the Paramount show, but an empathetic man who understands he is a symbol of hope to many and if he gives up, they will too. It can feel like a burden to carry others hopes on your shoulders, but I think it goes beyond responsibility and becomes inspiring and motivating that you have the power to bring out the best in others with just your presence. If we had more positive role models not just in media but in our personal lives I think we could all benefit.

      @@jams1942 I respect your perspective on things, but like I said chief is not a one man army, he is no hero, he is a soldier, protecting humanity does not require one man to do all the work he could not fight an entire army alone, not without help, he is been fighting along side with Marines, Spartans and friends all the way, only to lose most of them.
      Chief was saved a few times by his allies, he was saved by Cortana from firing the halo ring, Chief could have been responsible of destroying all life if Cortana was not there for him. Arbiter, he saved Miranda Keyes from Tartarus before he forced her to fire the Ring. The Spirit of Fire, even as they are MIA they stopped the Banish for using the Ark to activate all the Halo rings. Cortana saved Chief from the Didact and from the explosion, Lasky helped chief to get inside the Composer. Noble 6 and his team brought Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn, and even stopping a Covenant ship of destroying Keyes's ship. Samuel saved Blue Team and sacrificed himself to stop the Covenant and buy them time to escape when they were inside the ship, John would have done the same. Captain Keyes did a mental battle to prevent the Flood of finding Earth. Besides, in Halo 4 Chief could not do it all without Cortana, in Reach if it wasn't for Noble 6 Cortana wouldn't have been with Chief, in Halo Wars 2 and 1 if it wasn't for the Spirit of Fire the Banish would have gotten all the rings in a early stage before Infinite or even letting the Covenant of a mass army/fleet of Forerunner ships, if it wasn't for Locke Chief and Blue team would have been taken away by Cortana. All of these, were not always his doing, and most of them were sacrificed to stop the enemy to accomplish their goal, Chief couldn't even take on Atriox himself.

      John-117 and Jorge-052 were both highly empathetic Spartan IIs which makes them highly unusual.
      Spartan IIs and IIIs were detached from normal human marines and humanity generally.
      John-117 cares about his fellow soldiers and is often considered a symbol of hope in the UNSC Marnie corps. He lightens up but chief sees himself as a soldier first and before his confession that’s how he saw Fernando Esparza/echo 216. After he realizes he’s dealing with a civilian he tries a different tactic to rally him.
      Jorge-052 was way more openly emphatic much to the chagrin of Emile-A239. He was showing compassion for a woman who’s father died at the hands of the covenant showing the greater concern for her well being over the mission at hand. and Emile remarks “big man forgets what he is sometimes” and Jorge replies with a simple “she just lost her father” even for a Spartan II he displays a lot of compassion for regular people which is off putting for a Spartan III such as Emile

    There have been a handful of scenes in games that brought the beginning of tears, but this scene has to be the best one that brought them enough to dabbed them.
    343 Did a fantastic job of filming and animating this scene, and the voice actors get a MASSIVE applause for the spectacular emotions in their voices.
    Chief being calm and collect, as well as omitting his failures and his role.
    Echo-216 (SPOLIER: Fernando Esparza) for making a believable line delivery on how the UNSC has been scattered, and like he said "Crushed. Beaten. Broken. Useless." Hits in more ways than one. After the Infinity is destroyed and Master Chief thought dead, the UNSC believed where fighting a losing battle. Add on top that he omits that he's not only a fraud but also stole the Pelican and wants to be left in the graveyard with the other scrap......damn that hit hard....REALLY hard. He believed that he wasn't good enough after having lost everything. But with some encouraging words from both Chief and Weapon you can see when a weight of everything has been lifted off his shoulders ( 3:20 )
    All in all out of all of the scenes in this fantastic game, this is my favorite
