Music : "Clair de lune" by Django Reinhardt's quintet... dont Sydney Bechet à a clarinette ??? J'en suis presque sûre, mais pas tout à fait.
Absolutely beautiful. RIP to the greatest guitarist in the world.
So fucking beautiful, the more I listen to django, the more I can't believe how talented he was. Another master piece.

Il est 3 heures du mat', je viens d'écouter quelques excellents guitaristes dans la tradition de Django. Et puis je choisis au hasard dans ma liste des morceaux que Django joue lui-même... Un monde de différence, rien à comparer. Rien que dans sa façon d'exposer le thème Django impose les émotions, nous emmène dans son monde de beauté. Le goût exquis. Django, plus d'un demi-siècle plus tard, nous remplit encore de bonheur. Merci, mon frère.

Gorgeous. Amazing how Django overcame his handicap to produce such fantastic music. Europe's first great jazz musician. So sad that he died at just 42 years old but at least he made loads of recordings for us all to enjoy.

I was expecting a rendition of Debussy's Clair De Lune but then again, I suppose a lot of songs have been written with moonlight in mind.
I was expecting it to be based on Debussy's work as well lol
Clair de Lune is quite frequent theme in art. You have Beethoven and one of his most famous piano sonatas, then Verlaine and his poem, then Gabriel Fauré, who just literally composed music to accompany the poem to be sung by baritone with piano, then Debussy and here Django! 🙂

Amen Mick! That solo is a great example of that. None of his young devotees today can nail that particular solo on Claire Dr Lune with the finesse or precision that Django does! But I dearly love and respect every last one of them for giving it their all. There is no greater love than keeping Django's music and memory alive!

There's a lot of Django compilations out there (naturally enough since his recording career predated the arrival of the LP: they were all 78s with a maximum of 3 minutes per side) but it is rare to see ones focused purely on his quintet w/clarinet (1940-1947)

Well, I can't say that I get it, but I'm glad you had a laugh :)
To your point though, I didn't say that I could teach anyone to play like Django, just the intro and the chords of this particular song. Furthermore, I can't imagine that the idea of some song or style of playing is unobtainable can be good for one's own playing. I've learnt loads of things that previously seemed impossible, and I'm sure you have as well.

Si j'en crois l'édition intégrale de chez Frémeaux, ce morceau "Clair de lune" est de Django lui-même, l'enregistrement est du 16 avril 47 à Paris et c'est bien Michel de Villers à la clarinette. (+Eddie Bernard au piano, Joseph Reinhardt à la seconde guitare, Willy Lockwood à la basse et Al Craig à la batterie.) (Django est mon idole depuis l'enfance…)

Cette musique a été composée par kosma pour le film clair de lune ( René Clair je crois ) dans lequel django jouait. Hélas ce film n' est jamais sorti et la bande a été perdue. Il reste cependant quelques photos du tournage

Merci pour la video. Je viens d'assister a un concert dans l'ouest du Massachusetts, Django en Juin. "Manouche" (le mot correct, j'espere) est la meilleure musique. A mes oreilles, le francais son comme la musique and et la poesie. Une belle langue et une belle pays. J'ai visite trois fois. Je souhaite que je pourrais comprendre une conversation francais mieux.

Now this is a bit special.
There is nothing common between Django and Gipsy jazz. Sound, melodic flow, emotion, intensity, Django brought it to a miracle. Most gipsy guitarists reduced it to a gimmick.

Django is Gypsy/Romani of Russian gypsy ancestry which is more than evident in his playing ,phrasing and tuning , he's style and technique is nothing to do with Spanish/Flamenco Gypsies .This is lil known fact but one that is very important to fathom his mastery and brilliance.He grew up listening to old Russian gypsy songs from old country, he learned to play guitar by playing those fantastic folk songs and romances.To educate yourself I'd strongly advise anyone to browse youtube for Russian Gypsy songs in particular guitar playing and mastery of it There 're some truly great players equal to Django's talent.
