  • Is there anything better than an animal with personality? Earlier this year, I had the absolute pleasure of taking John @ Art East Quilting Co’s class on pet portraits, and since that class I’ve been hooked on him, his classes, and his unique animal quilts. Today we are talking about his quilt story, and the inspiration behind his charismatic animal quilt patterns.

This was just an exceptional interview. I was unaware of him as a designer and have just fallen in love with his quilts.
May I please make a request for the future. I had a real difficult time hearing him speak. When this happens with other you tubers I just click on the closed captioning to compensate. You did not have this available on this video. Could you please do this in future videos. Thank you.

Karen, I love the blouse your wearing & it blends in w/beautiful quilt on background. He's pretty amazing, not to have sewn, and to jump into quilts! I've sewn clothes for my daughter, kitchen items, doll clothes, but quilting frustrates me... my hand is so unsteady and it involves math! I believe it was a blessing for him to have not sewn other things before quilting!

Amen! I’ve intermittently sewn since I was 12 years old, but during last year’s lockdown, I couldn’t stay in my home one more day without going nutty, so I signed up for a quilt class-spur of the moment. At 52, it was time to learn the “proper” technique to sew some specific things.
The day before the class started, I went to the shop for my fabric, and any random supplies I had not accumulated over the years, and wound up spending $120 on fabric for my first go. I then realized I didn’t LIKE how some of the fabrics played together, and long story short, I bet I have $300+ into JUST the fabric. 🤣.
I DEFINITELY made the “fabric choices” mistake, and if I’m being honest? When I quilt now, i read the pattern from start to finish multiple times. I also start with the base fabrics using Your lessons on color and value. I think Your trick to use a black and white phone pic has been the SINGLE MOST HELPFUL TIP I’ve ever gotten. It has visually balanced my projects.
I love your channel, and have been with you from almost the very start. Thank you for spreading a smile and experience in the quilting world. ❤️

So much fun. I have to have the goats! I know about tools. I have the very first pair of fabric scissors from home ec at age 13 - 63 years ago

Goats in Pajamas has been on my wishlist for a long time and now I have more patterns that I want. Plus, if I didn't have a conflict with the pet portrait class in September, I would have signed up already. I guess I'll just have to wait. In other words, thank you for this video. :) Love John's creative spirit.

Label those quilts. It is about documenting the time and circumstances. One I made from all
Blue scraps in my stash without buying anything , on a challenge from my sister. So I wrote about that on the label. It’s sew easy- I iron a white or cream scrap with a little sizing so it’s crisp, or iron onto freezer paper. I hand write on the fabric with a pigma permanent pen. Then I frame around that piece with narrow strips log cabin style, and press the raw edges under neatly. And hand sew it in the corner. Takes me about 30 minutes. Lately, I’ve found an even quicker method. I cut a square and press it in half on the diagonal. I write on the triangle and stitch the raw edges into a corner of the binding

Oh! Heat set your writing with a hot iron before sewing it on.

      That triangle idea is genius!

When I visited Angela Walters in May 2019, the featured quilt in her store was Goats in Pajamas. I bought the pattern, not realizing it was designed by a fellow Canadian.

A fun interview with John. His patterns look so cute. Especially goats in pyjamas. Are the blocks pieced, applique, FPP or a combination.👍🇦🇺

Thank you! All my patterns are traditionally pieced. My pet portraits are raw-edge appliqué.

After I retired, I was ask to join the only quilt guild we have in our county. I attended three meeting that I left depressed and crying (because one woman was so very rude to me). I gave up on being accepted into that quilt guild. I'm a loner; and, I'm not the only one who is a loner because of that guilt guild.

I like my time alone sewing but I learned a lot from all the women I met at the guild I was in. There was one woman who I had to tell to leave me alone and don't talk to me. She bothered everyone and gave the room a negative energy. I was the only one who had the nerve to tell her that. She left, everyone was happy. You should go back.

I am so delighted to find that the only outlet in California is nearby in the wonderful, historic town of San Juan Bautista. It is on the route from my house to visit the relatives. Will have to allow some time to have some excellent Mexican food at Los Jardines and stop at the historic bakery.
