I have been looking for the Bradlees commercial from 1984 forever! It was filmed at the Swampscott, MA Bradlees, and I am in it at the end!! I was so glad to finally find it on here...thanks for posting it!
I need to get it on DVD. Then I'll watch it every Christmas. I don't like watching it on TV now. They cut it up for more commercial time. Which is a little counter productive to the story's message when you stop and think about it :P
Wonderful collection of commercials! This really brings back memories because my parents taped Mickey's Christmas Carol the same year, so many of these commercials are on that tape. I'm pretty sure the only unfamiliar stuff are the local stores/news, which makes sense. I LOVE the Christmas stuff. The M&M's one was a fave. This just needed an old Folger's one somewhere, haha. Thank you, Adam! :0)
I had so much Rainbow Brite stuff when I was little, including Starlite and Murky Dismal. Good times. That Pinocchio ad is insane. It's got some intense parts in it but it's not THAT bad. Even when I was little, I didn't think it was scary. In fact, it was one of my favorites (still is).
I got that Crystal Barbie @ 3:05 for Christmas that year! That was a great christmas that year.. got so many cool 80's toys. Hard to believe it was 30 years ago already
--I remember my parents taped the first airing of "Mickey's Christmas Carol"! --McDonald's commercials back then were epic. --I'm DYING at that Cabbage Patch Kids game. --They really utilized those "Wizard of Oz" songs in the Rainbow Brite ads, didn't they? --Ah yes, that's why I buy a car. So the color goes with everything in MY wardrobe as well, BARBIE. --....Did I spy a young Julian McMahon in that "The Sun Also Rises" promo?
Thank you. Now I know what I missed out on. I have this (almost) exact airing on Beta, but the only commercials we have are McDonald's and Rainbow Brite, Starlite, and Lurky. I guess my parents were watching while they were taping this one (I was only two years old at the time). And I say almost exact, because of different markets. These are from Boston, and I'm from DC.
I used to have a Rainbow Brite doll when I was a kid. I even had her horse Starlight. I didn't have the Lurky doll though, but I never wished I had him.
+darksilverdreams To answer the Bradlees question, what finished the chain off for good (after having emerged back in profitability in the late 1990s after a few years of previous struggles) was the 2000 economic decline that did in most of the "dot-coms". Also regarding wondering why they failed while Stop & Shop survived, funny you brought that up considering that Stop & Shop owned Bradlees from 1961-92.
That's when I saw Pinocchio in the theater (I was 5). It was actually like my favorite Disney movie until "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast". That despite all the scary scenes (I fully agree: the promo is like for a horror movie).
Omg, I know I’ve heard that song from the Children’s Hospital ad. It’s going to bother me until I figure out from whence it came. You’re not alone; it is familiar. Edit: I think it was used in some Fisher-Price ads.
only Barbie would think of matching her car w/ her clothes the 2nd Rainbow Brite ad had some awesome copyright infringement that Cabbage Patch pop-up game creeped me out wasn't that Pinocchio preview a little...heavy-handed? love the Disney Xmas cartoons the McDonald's ads of this period were amazing lots of good jingles in this one-Bradlees, Mickey D's & esp. M&M's why does the Bradlee's ad talk @ Cabbage Patc dolls, yet show dogs instead?
It's Thom Bray from the NBC series "Riptide" advertised in the same promo. I wouldn't expect the average person to know that, but Fred Armisen was only 18 in 1984 and didn't even have an IMDB credit until 1998.
Wow... I was watching this as it happened that very night, and I actually remember!!

These bring back so many wonderful
Memories. 💕
If commercials were still like this, I'd NEVER mute the TV.
"Mickey's Christmas Carol, wow, that takes me back, when it was new, the good old days

jesus so 84 was it's first eairing? i'm 31 and i still watch it every christmas. tradition. :-)
The people in the McDonald's commercial looked really jazzed about eating McDonald's burgers. Gotta love the 1980'S advertising.
Ah, back when Mickey's Christmas Carol wasn't cut up for more commercials >>

Who else loved Goofy's "YAHAHAHAHOOWEE!" scream? Crystal Ken doll, now known as "Sparkly Vampire" doll,
Ah, I had Crystal Barbie, too! In fact, I think I still have her, somewhere, packed away at my parents' house.
I uploaded some breaks from NBC's Mickey's Christmas Carol airing from 1987.
I used to have a Rainbow Brite doll when I was a kid. I even had her horse Starlight. I didn't have the Lurky doll though, but I never wished I had him.
5:19 - I recognize that song from some of those Golden Book Videos!
That's awesome
My Sister had Rainbow Bright, and I am not ashamed to admit that I had Murky lol
omg! the melody in the barbie commercials is from the seeker's song, "georgy girl." interesting.
oh boy a real big mac
Holy Crap! BRADLEES = my childhood! :-D
Pinocchio is definitely a nightmare fuel...

I think they should go back and replace all films that used the "Wilhelm scream" with the goofy scream!
I can't believe a Rainbow Brite commercial used a Wizard of Oz song.
Me neither. The company must've gotten permission from the studio to use the music. Otherwise they would get sued.
@LikaLaruku yea, tell me about it, they did that alot then, heck i think they still do,
I think so. Go find it on DVD or maybe on demand and see

Edit: I think it was used in some Fisher-Price ads.
I wonder how many kids actually had or even wanted the Lurky toy.
You'd be surprised. I know a lot of my friends had one. It was a big, soft puff ball. It was a fantastic stuffed animal.
only Barbie would think of matching her car w/ her clothes
the 2nd Rainbow Brite ad had some awesome copyright infringement
that Cabbage Patch pop-up game creeped me out
wasn't that Pinocchio preview a little...heavy-handed?
love the Disney Xmas cartoons

why does the Bradlee's ad talk @ Cabbage Patc dolls, yet show dogs instead?
@franzchick66 oh yeah, they used that melody for years
in the mcdonalds ad, did anyone else see the coke truck?
Diet Coke?
Nah...it'll never sell! ;-)
Who is that at the 4:42 mark...it looks like Fred Armisen?
It's Thom Bray from the NBC series "Riptide" advertised in the same promo.
