Global Mountain Bike Network What would you do if you wanted to shorten your brake hoses? I hate cables/hoses flapping around so I would like to know how to make them shorter and neater
Hey gmbn I'm having trouble doing whips I've watched all your videos, here's why I'm having trouble. When I do them I turn my wheel just like your supposed then I try to whip the back end out but as I do that my back wheel hits the lip of the jump. If theirs any suggestions please tell me.
Great job, Andrew! Good information and an easy-to-follow explanation. You looked confident and delivered a good episode. Time to hit the trails and get some action videos in!
Fantastic description. Helped me switch from european to american style brake arrangement on my son's new bike from Chain Reaction Cycles (Vitus). Thank you for excellent tutorial. Worked like a charm.
If by European you mean left hand>rear brake and right hand>front brake, that happens only in the UK. In the rest of Europe, and the whole world for that matter, is like in the US: left hand>front brake & right hand>rear break.
Awesome explanation. I ride dirt bikes and have just picked up a new MTB and it is equiped with hydraulic brakes and I needed to swap my front and rear brakes. I put my front brakes on the right side..
The description is perfectly accurate...your interpretation was the issue here. If it was replacing hoses, the video description would have said 'replacing hoses'.
Cool. I've done this on my last car, a Rav4. Not quite the same thing, but on that I actually changed a caliper and bled the brakes. It's really not hard to learn with great videos like these.
I like the video simply because you used the English 'cable tie' rather than the USA term 'zip tie' like everyone else on here, even though they are from the UK ...👍
Thanks so much for the instruction. I am an Brit expat in the Philippines so no useful LBS. I knew it must be possible to change from left to right. I have successfully correctly orientated the brakes on my wonderful brand new Giant Fathom 29er - Thanks
This video is what I needed thanks!! I’ve been learning how to wheelie but the rear brake is on my right hand making it harder to feather the brake and throttle….but now I’m good!!!
Brilliant instructions on how to change the hoses. I had avoided messing with hydraulic brakes forever as I deemed it more dark arts of bike maintenance. With this guide, the process was a breeze. One thing I'd like to add is the front brake section: put something between (I used a plastic block from the bleeding kit, designed for this purpose) the brake pads before you start pumping the lever in order to remove the air bubbles. If you do not, you might have challenges fitting the wheel and brake disc back as the brake pads/brake cylinders might be too much out.
Just a note, you started squeezing and tapping the front lever / hose before the front wheel was back in. Only do this if you have a bleed block between the pistons to stop them pushing out! Or put the front wheel back first, making sure not to drop any fluid onto the rotor.
Charlie Ward Great pick up, I noticed that too. For people who don’t know, its difficult to connect his comment about don’t squeeze the brakes at the beginning of the video to him pumping the front brakes (left side) to get the air bubbles out and later put the front time on. I had assumed he put a brake block between the disk brakes to prevent them from closing tightly on each other.
Couple suggestions. 1. Use a proper flare nut wrench, not an standard wrench, on the brake line fittings. 2. When you bleed and compress lever, slightly crack the brake line fitting you removed earlier and let fluid seep along with any air bubble, then tighten before releasing lever. Repeat a few times. That tapping of the brake lines is worthless.
Thank you. I ride motorcycles. And for the life of me I don't understand why the front brake is on the left on bicycles. Time to switch them thanks again.
@@MrDeceptacon88 yeah bikes are motorcycles. Bicycles are bicycles. I don't refer to bikes as bicycles. Sorry just a thing with guys who ride bikes err motorcycles.
@GMBN I've recently asked you to make a video about how to change the brake hose and you said its a good idea, but by that, I didn't mean how to swap it, but rather how to completely remove an old damaged one and then exchange it with a new one. If you'd be able to make a video about that as well, that would really nice.
poolehart my brake hose was losing its side wall strength and always dilating when pressure was created, thereby reducing the force on the brake pads and the braking power. You may have something similar.
In industry yes flexible hose's are lifed as a general rule 5 to 7 years for ground equipment and 10 years for aircraft, although i have a set of hoses about 17 years old on one bike still working good, never even bled them.
You may need to swap brake hoses, when You decided to test 580mm bar, with bar ends, AND tried also a narrower grip position - for future bar trim, and then trimmed down the hoses and shifter cables, just to decide to go back to wider bars, and THEN found out trimmed hoses and cables are not long enough now ha ha ha. Did exactly that. But gotta say 580mm bar was enough unless I was going downstairs on an angle at low speed. I just gone back to factory 680 bar. It gave me discomfort in the past and wanted to try if it still will after riding some more this season and getting used to the load on my hands.
4/12/2021 I swapped the front caliper with the rear cause it has leak at the bleed port when strong braking is applied, I modulate braking in the front with no leak at all, thanks this video save me some money.
I really like the new presenter, but do we will have riding video with him ? And if anyone have already swap his hydraulic brake hoses, does it was hard to be used with ?

Hey Dotty love your channel and thank you for all the great information you put out. I recently purchased a bike and yes it has hydraulic brakes, and yes, I am the one that wants to replace the old looking black brake cables with snazzy red to make the bike pop. Since this is hydraulic and my first, I have watched several videos, but none show to remove the entire brake cable off the brake, replace with a new cable, then re fill the system with the appropriate amount of mineral oil to be able to stop the bike. Do you have such a video, is this not recommended? I have yet to find a total cable replacement video, only a switch side type. Is this even worth the process? Thanks again for all you and the great team you have there at GMBN do for the common Joe.

please create a video on "how to swap Gears", When I swap the rear break from right to left, I think it would be nice if I can swap the rear gear shifter from right to left hand .. I think this is hard, but you guys can help us...
I need to remove fairly new xt brakes from my nukeproof and fit on a new frame. If i disconnect the hose like you did from the brake and drag it through the frame will I lose fluid? Rather not bleed them if possible
Why on earth would you have the right lever operating the rear brake????? Maybe riding motorcycles also would change your mind. Just my opinion. Great vid. Excellent info.
This video came from the UK where the right hand lever is usually for the front brake, therefor Doddy's lesson came from the start point of right lever = front brake

This video made me feel like an idiot with what I did haha. Bleed your brakes anyways tbh It makes the brakes so much freaking smoother and better. Just my 2 cents :) thanks again for th video helped me out alot
Hi! Great video! I have Shimano brakes, M4100 lever. I want to do this on my bike. I've heard that the olive has to be changed. What size olive do i need? Or are they all the same size? Also, do i have to change the insert? Thank you!
Hey! It should be exactly the same process and you shouldn't need to change olives or inserts :) If in doubt your local bike shop could do this for you really quickly and for not much cost!
@@gmbn Hi. Thanks for reply! I'm sure i can do it myself, looks easy enough. I'm just a bit worried that they could start to leak if i use old olive. Ok, i'll give it a go. Thanks!

How about a video on actually replacing a hose. Both the lever and caliper ends if there is a difference. I'm working with a Tektro system.

Gotta say, reusing an olive is sketchy AF, but it's good to know it is an option and can be successful, at least sometimes.
Easier than I thought it was, thanks 🙏
Make sure you put the wheel back on BEFORE you touch the levers when bleeding the brakes! Or it can be hard pushing the brake calipers back in!
