  • Having your brake cables the right length is important for routing and aero purposes, but working on hydraulic brake lines can be a daunting prospect! Disk brakes have certainly brought an added complexity to servicing your brakes versus the cables of old. In this GCN Tech Maintenance Monday, Alex will walk you through everything you need to know about shortening your brake lines for both Shimano and SRAM groupsets.

    Have you ever shortened your brake hoses yourself? How did it go?

      Many times. You can remove the brake pads before and push out the pistons a bit more than normal. After shortening the hose, you have a bit of fluid at the lower part of the system that can help to push any air that might have gone in up into the reservoir. Poor man‘s bleed.

    Top tip, when cutting the hose have the hose pointing vertically to the sky then there is less chance of fluid left in the remaining hose dripping out, like it could if cutting horizontally.

    At 3.22 you mention about greasing the nut and caliper thread. If u just put grease on the nut then the thread will push out the excess grease leaving none being pushed inside.
    I'm was a plumber and we used this trick on all thread pastes or flux

    I have! I just switch out my mountain bike Sram Code brakes for Shimano XT brakes and needed to shorten the hoses. I have the Park Tool cable routing kit which made running the new housing internally easy. During the pandemic I worked in a warehouse building bikes, I got tried of using other people dull housing cutting tools so I invested in a Jagwire Pro Hydraulic and Needle driver which works really well.

    Wouldn’t the reverse threading do exactly what you say it does not Alex? The reverse threaded olive is turned while being tightened onto the barb in exactly the sense that would loosen the barb… Maybe it is to prevent attaching the olive from over stressing the threads that the self threading barb digs into the hose? I suppose those are pretty delicate so over tightening is worse than slightly turning them out while attaching the olive? In any event, thread things the correct way!

      @SlimPickins_07 2 роки тому

      @@nathanielhawkins6756 you are turning the nut to the right, the friction from that would tighten the barb, not loosen it. If the barb was regular right hand thread, it could loosen it.

    • @nathanielhawkins6756
      @nathanielhawkins6756 2 роки тому +2

      @@SlimPickins_07 that's what I mean. If you want a new olive but to leave the barb in place loosening the reverse thread olive by turning clockwise would only tighten the barb. Either way I can't see how if both threads are standard that one will unscrew the other.

    • @SlimPickins_07
      @SlimPickins_07 2 роки тому +1

      @@nathanielhawkins6756 it would be the nut that would unscrew the olive when installing the line. The barb is in the line tight enough that you don't have to worry about it coming out.

      The official shimano tool is useless as well. Shimano’s barbs are just absurdly overtight for what low system pressures there are. It’d seem the blocks with a mallet is still the only way to go.

    It is 100% sure that air will go into the system when you cut the hose so my experience is that your system needs rebleeding. Always wondered why SRAM delivers their calipers and shifters allready bleed when 95% of all new frames is made for internal routing.
