  • Trying Hungarian Food in Budapest
    Yesterday, when arriving in Budapest, we bought a 24 hour ticket valid for bus, tram and metro, 🚃🚎🚇so today we’ve been crossing Donau exploring both Buda and Pest.
    😋 Travelling is trying traditional local food, and here in Budapest we had Pogácsa, Langos and Zöldséges Lecsó Puliszkával. The Hungarian herbal liqueur or bitters, Unicum, drunk as a digestif and apéritif, made us go “uuuuuhhhaaooo” 😝🥴😂
    Also, today we had an encountering, on distance, with the F1 driver Zhou Guanyu🏎, the relics of the city founder St Stephen (who died 1083)🫲, and visited a great place called For Sale Pub / 232211753510047
    Off course, and as being swedes coming from the land of FIKA, we figured it’s a must to embraced the cafe culture in Budapest! We had cake for lunch🍰😃.
    Unfortunately, we are only staying for another night in this, a little worn down but still, so very beautiful city, being half way through our 15-day journey, we are leaving tomorrow for a new country #51. See you in Croatia 🇭🇷👋

      Budapest pálinkas are nothing compared to Szatmár county peach pálinka. Fearsome to even mention the rasping strong Transylvanian ethnic Hungarian pálinka nicknamed bearkiller (medveölő). If you can survive all those, you're the real man 😄

    I was wondering what typical Hungarian food you will able to find that suits vegetarians, because there isn't many. I could not have recalled one when the video started, but the lángos is indeed one of them, nice catch! Even most of the scones (pogácsa) you have tried are made with pork lard (the most popular one is the one with pork cracklings mixed in the dough). Most (traditional) restaurants are not even trying and the ones that trying have rather clumsy attempts by somehow altering the recipes or just leaving the meat out. That is, if they can even comprehend the concept, I have even seen chicken ceasar salad as a vegetarian option :)
    I am not bashing Hungarian cuisine here, just pointing out if you are vegetarian, you cannot really take a proper sample of Hungarian food, unfortunately.

      Thanks for watching! We're glad you found your way to our channel 😃 You are absolutely right, there aren't that much to choose from as vegetarians. Apart from what we tried in the video (we even included side-dishes 😄) we couldn't find much to eat that was traditional. We're sure that there are tons of dishes we aren't aware of, so if anyone knows any other vegetarian food - please share 😀

    • @ThorTyrker
      @ThorTyrker Рік тому +1

      @@exploringplanethome Well, yes, we do not really use too much veggies in our dishes traditionally (there is this opinion amongst most Hungarians that vegetables are for feed the animals and fruits not end up as pálinka (local type of brandy) is a blasphemy :)
      So it will be mostly sweet kind of stuff, cakes and such, altough we have sweet dishes that are perfectly normal to eat for lunch or dinner. Plum dumplings (szilvás gombóc) are one of those, I highly recommend that, really delicious. Fruit soup (gyümölcsleves) is also a thing, very popular, sweet, very delicious, it's pink and supposed to be consumed fridge cold, perfect for hot summer days. Cottage cheese dumplings (túrógombóc) are also sweet, provided you are okay with dairy products - I guess you are, since you had no issue with cheese. Egg soup (tojásleves) is also nice although it is a hate or love kind of food - I happen to love it, a bit reminds me of Asian soups. Egg noodles (tojásos nokedli) are nice too, just make sure they will not sparkle some crispy bacon pieces on the top, as it is the custom. Mushroom paprikash (gombapaprikás) is the perfect way to try the most Hungarian meal there is but without the meat (you need to be sure though they used cooking oil and not lard for frying the onion). And you definitely want to try the chimney cake (kürtőskalács) - to leave Hungary without eating one is simply a sin.

      Many people are mistaken about the fact that in Hungary they only eat meat. In the middle of the last century, mainly due to poverty, there was a lot of meat-free food. Cottage cheese pasta (túrós tészta), potato pasta (krumplis tészta), poppy seed pasta (mákos tészta), semolina pasta (grízes tészta), jam pasta (lekváros tészta), paprika potatoes (paprikás krumpli), egg dumplings (tojásos galuska), fried vegetables, layered potato (rakott krumpli), stuffed egg (töltött tojás), a variety of noodles and dumplings, sweet and savory homemade cakes. I hope you had a good time here.With its 40% alcohol, Unicum is not considered a particularly strong drink in Hungary. Pálinka is usually 48-50% alcohol. Puliszka (polenta) is a traditional Transylvanian dish, which entered Hungarian menus from here. If you ever come to Hungary again, go to Lake Balaton. Balatonfüred, Siófok, Tihany, Keszthely are all beautiful places. A little language lesson so you don't get so lost. 😀 pogacsa is pronounced correctly = pogacha. The pronunciation of cs is the same as the last sound of touch. The other sound that usually causes problems is s. It is pronounced like the English sh. The English s is the same as the Hungarian sz. One more thing, if you've been here, try Túró Rudi.
