I will forever have a soft spot for this movie. My grandparents took me to this when I was a kid and they *never* went to the movies. Ever. It just was not their thing, but their friends mentioned it being so much fun with their own grand kids so my grandparents surprised me by taking me to see it. I loved it. It was fun, had a lot of action, and quite a bit of comedy. And around this time Will Smith rose to stardom. Bad Boys, Independence Day, and Men in Black made him an A list actor. Loved him in this.

For such a silly movie, there is some really excellent acting on display. There are also a few moving and thought provoking lines of dialogue. "Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Tommy Lee's delivery of "Try it." is somehow very powerful to me. Also Tommy Lee's speech about a smart person but dumb people, ending with "Imagine what we'll know tomorrow ," is so deep it almost seems out of place in this silly little movie. Great film.

The actor that played the alien with the pregnant wife (she gave birth to the cute little squid thingie), Patrick Breen, was also in Galaxy Quest, playing another squid alien (he was the one who told Alan Rickman's character that he always thought of him as a father figure. Which makes me teary eyed every time.) And has Vincent D'Ofrio ever been in a bad movie? I don't think so. Loved him in "The Cell". Oh, also Tony Shalhoub was in both movies, too, an alien in this movie (he got his head blasted off and then it grew back) and was the crew member in Galaxy Quest who had an alien love interest.

9:34 You know it wasn't until years after seeing this the first time that it occurred to me exactly why J was standing out here. He was literally pointing out that Zed had not actually told them anything. He was saying that they were the "best of the best", but he hadn't actually told them anything about why they were there. The shooting range part shows that he's willing to look past outward appearances as well and, to quote a cycloptic ninja, look underneath the underneath, which would definitely be a plus with MIB.

    • @austingillum4807
      @austingillum4807 2 роки тому +1

In the shooting range, everybody else shot anything looking like an alien. The MIB deal with aliens of all types every day. Most living a normal life going about their business. Don't want someone who just wants to shoot anything weird looking he sees. Want someone who can determine what might actually be a problem.

Fun story about the Universal Studios ride:
Universal Parks have their own version of Imagineers, whose job is to figure out how to add that special "oomph" to each ride. Like on the old King Kong ride, when the Kong animatronic roared it also shot a burst of banana-scented air. Or how each ride has a fun interactive element to waiting in line, which keeps you entertained and gets you in the mindset for the ride.
Well, they'd opened the MIB ride in Orlando, and it was getting lukewarm feedback. To see what was wrong one of their engineers spent a day just riding over and over, taking notes on what other passengers were enjoying and when they lost interest.
Everyone loved the majority of the ride and the zapper game. But everyone felt the ending, where you get eaten by a giant bug, was kinda lackluster. The rest of the ride was so interactive and engaging that a static mouth-shaped door and some smoke machines didn't match up to the immersion.
So he drove around the Orlando area to Wal-Marts, Eckard Drug, Sam's Club, Home Depot, and all sorts of other stores and bought as many humidifiers as he could fit in his car, and a bunch of extension cords.
The current ride has a more efficient setup, but after adding some cheap humidifiers to the air conditioned ride suddenly made the air in the bug's mouth feel sticky and thick, adding a tactile sense to the experience. Without having to do any major redesigns, they fixed the biggest complaint about the ride experience.
Incidentally, as a former Florida resident I would have just cracked the fire exit and let the natural humidity do the job.

So much to say, but just consider this. "Men in Black" came out 25 years ago. Yes, actually, it was July of 1997, but considering we just started 2023, it's fair to say 25 years. It hasn't been beat. The special effects are not "dated." The script, the plot, and the humor are so spot on most people don't even care the movie actually _is_ set in "present day 1997." It still feels fresh.
    This isn't a science fiction film, it's a treasure.
Plus, the more you delve into this movie -- how it was made, how it was written and rewritten, how they almost cast completely different actors, but we all agree NO ONE could have pulled off the chemistry of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith -- well, suffice to say the movie exists as its own testament to one of its internal theme, "serendipity." If you don't know what that means, in short, it's the happy "accidents" of life that build up to something wonderful that in hindsight you realize, "Whoa! Was that ... destiny?"
You don't believe me? Again, consider this. Research it and you'll find that Tommy Lee Jones was the THIRD person to be considered for "Agent K," and Will Smith was like the fifth considered for "Agent J." Here is what's so doubly funny about this. No only were both in their prime, not only did both embody the spirits of their characters, and not only did the two of them have a phenomenal chemistry that both were eager to have a sequel, I present again, "What IS this movie?" Why, it's "Men in Black.'
It's about an para-normal organization shrouded in mystery and anonymity.
And what are the names of the actors?
    Smith
    Jones
Truly, could anyone have written this moment of serendipity better?
Oh? It WAS planned? It WAS!? Oh, COOL! Yeah, sure, I'd LOVE to learn more. Just look at this pen you say? Um ... it looks famili...*POOF!*

I love your reaction to this movie, which I have always been fond of since its creator Lowell Cunningham is a good buddy of mine. I had the entire run of the original comics he wrote (which were different in tone, but still good, and Lowell had no issues with the changes they made for the movie) that he autographed for me back when the series was first released in 1990-1991. I'll still see him around town at times, usually at a book store, just a low key geeky dude (seriously low key. When interviewed by the local paper he simply referred to himself as the local nerd who made good) in one of his many beloved and cool bowling shirts. 😀
Smith and Jones do a great job in this movie, with Jones playing his usual too calm to be real self while Smith was typically over the top. Just a fun dynamic, and Linda Fiorentino was always an actress I liked and she did a great job as the ME. As a side note, she and Anthony Edwards (Goose in Top Gun) were fun to watch in the all but unknown movie Gotcha!, which is another favorite of mine.

I'm glad you enjoyed this movie! It's a personal childhood favorite of mine, and I'd say the song is equally as iconic. People seem pretty split on MIB2, but I enjoy it overall. It definitely takes a bit of a different direction from the first one, but it's got the same general feeling. The scores of both movies are highly underrated and they're among Danny Elfman's best in my opinion,, right up there with the Spider-Man movies, his work with Tim Burton, and the theme song he wrote for Army of Darkness!!
Unfortunately, I haven't seen MIB3. :( I'm not 100% sure what people generally think of that on or MIB: International.

The actor who played the alien with his head blown off that grew back also starred in a tv series called Monk. It's about a private detective in San Francisco that has long term memory loss but could recall details in every crime scene to solve a case. He used to be a police detective until he was injured. It's also a pretty funny show as he tries to struggle with his memory loss.

That wasn't Monk. Monk was the one where he went a bit peculiar after his wife was murdered. He is a compulsive-obsessive Neat Freak, Germaphobe and afraid of just about everything. Also he is a brilliant ex-cop private detective. The description you gave sounds like the show Unforgettable.

Good, very entertaining movie. The only thing keeping it from being over-the-top GREAT is the linear nature of the script. It they'd spent a little more time and come up with some legitimately interesting twists, it'd be on my "top ten" list... but it's still a great choice for when you need one movie everyone will enjoy.

Love this movie. Honestly never put it together until now that the actress who plays the coroner is the same actress that plays the lead in my favorite Kevin Smith film Dogma(Linda Fiorentino) lol. Incidentally, if you've never seen Dogma I strongly advise it for a watch as well. It's a bit more crude than your standard fare but also witty, thought provoking, and extremely hilarious and unlike some of Kevin Smith's other works it functions perfectly as a standalone movie. Also it's got the late great Alan Rickman playing as The Voice of God so there's that too lol

Speaking of Kevin Smith, I would also suggest the entire View Askewniverse as a whole, including including Clerks (1994), Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Clerks II (2006), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019), and Clerks III (2022)

@@alextan1478 Oh, no doubt. I just recommended Dogma because of the actress coincidence and it's also a good microcosm of the type of sometimes juvenile, sometimes cerebral comedy Smith uses as well so it serves as a strong entry vessel to the View Askewniverse. As you've shown there's content for days from there :D

Fun reaction, Addie. Men In Black (1997) is one of my favorite sci-fi comedies. Even I discovered this movie after riding MIB Alien Attack at Universal Studios Florida. The spin level on that ride is more intense compared to the Cat in the Hat ride at Islands of Adventure, which is calmer. You're definitely gonna enjoy its sequels Men In Black II (2002) & Men In Black 3 (2012). BTW, nice color coordination with your sweater. The Squarespace ad with your image square in space at the start and the way you said "Oops!" at 24:39 was hilarious.

Instead of listing every movie these actors have been in, just stick with the best. Will Smith was in Independence Day. Tommy Lee Jones was in the Fugitive (although his best performance was in the miniseries Lonesome Dove). Vincent D'Onofrio was in the first half of Full Metal Jacket; he was also a great villain in the first season of the Netflix MCU series Daredevil.
