- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #648
June 2022 NV/OR/CA Expedition Part 2 of 17
Dates of adventure: 6/3/22
A viewer tipped me off to some old ruins only a couple miles from where I was camping, so I headed up to check them out, figuring it would be a quick hike with not much to see. WRONG!! It turned out to be an amazingly well-kept little cabin...and a GNARLY hike to get there! This was the only time in all my desert hiking experience that I seriously ran out of water, and it almost turned into a survival situation. Many lessons learned on this adventure!

I know Dennis. A couple of weeks ago I showed him your video. He much appreciated not revealing the location and respecting his belongings. He has worked very hard restoring this cabin and all materials were carried in without the aid of machines or pack animals. Thanks for putting your comments in the log book.
I kinda worried. I wanted to say:. WH I'm in your house right now! I went home one time and a guy was just leaving with an armload of my stuff!😳. WH I love you 🥰
Nice scenery and colors😍
Love the way people leave things for people to use and trust them to be responsible for all the stuff left, makes the world a better place, keep up the good vids
What's sad it only takes a few messed up, bad people to destroy it. Lot of places like this are being locked up because of these problems. Destroyed property, used needles and other disgusting things found have caused it.
To see something like this, is extremely rare anymore.
Lessons learned... be PREPARED. Extra water is crucial, and enough food is important. Thanks for posting this one :-)
To be honest,
I think she mildly pushed her luck this time...
You have to be extra careful if you're on your own with no one backing you up.
Get a Sawyer mini filter $20.00 @ Walmart. Can of electrolyte mix, sleeves for individual serving there, pharmacy,GNC type of stores Much knowledge too . Jug of water in your truck, take a canteen to suit your dramatic license ! Hard candy keeps mouth "moist" Protect your heart young one, don't do it again. we take days off our lives when we try to "camel" it. Leading cause of stroke is dehydration. You'll never feel it coming I didn't. Bóom ! Your down. .Sonetimes ruined for life Take Care we need ya ! Many fans salute you.🇺🇸👁️🦇
@@FishMH ... yes, dehydration, including body cramping, can creep up on a person in a very deadly manner.
Avengerll , if she was less fit she'd have been scrood for sure.
@@FishMH Yes, always carry water, snacks.,food ,map/compass and a battery pack for the cell just in case
Even the most experienced sometimes drops the ball. Glad you are safe.
That cabin was the cleanest & almost elegant you have ever shown us. It was pretty scary hike though. Don't take chances.
That brilliant volunteer cabin, should be called the "desert rose cabin," because to see one in pristine condition like that makes it as rare as a cactus rose.
Young lady this find is a wow. The bear thing . Was goood . I enjoy the stuff you post is neet. I dont think my cabin is that nice . Ok it is good but I didn't backpack the stuff in. Thank you and your friend that pointed it out WOW. Blessings to you
A Desert Rose is a cactus flower? 🌵 I need to know....I go by Desert Rose...long story.
That second cabin was a dream for sure! very, very neat and tidy! The beds looked so inviting. Thanks for taking us along again, be safe.
I love that you know Tammy! Deep cut! RIP Debbie Reynolds
Major props to the caretaker(s) of this amazing cabin! Good thing she followed those horses. Note : get some sunscreen lotion in there.
Here is a short story... Story Musgrave (born August 19, 1935) is an American physician and a retired NASA astronaut. He flew on SIX space shuttle missions. But as the story goes that I heard, he was grounded because he was becoming too familiar with space travel and started doing his own unsanctioned experiments. The moral of the story... be careful because the more experience you get living in the desert, the bigger risks you will take because of your confidence. BUT... never forget... the desert doesn't care. :)
I met him while exhibiting at an astronomy-related trade show, where he'd been a speaker. I was trying to navigate a truck (26ft box, 35ft overall) out of the exhibit space and between parked cars where they shouldn't be. He saw that my girlfriend was having trouble guiding me through the maze, so he jumped into action and choreographed a path and each cut of the wheel which was needed to do it. Awesome guy.
My favorite story I've heard about him was that when he was 3 years old, his parents trusted his outdoor skills enough to let him go off into the woods alone. But on a cold, snowy day, his mother was worried about him staying out too many hours. When he went to take his very puffy winter mittens off to unzip to pee in the woods, he realized his mother had safety-pinned them onto his snowsuit, so he would have to go home to pee.
I hadn't heard about him ever being grounded. I wonder if his "extra experiments" had anything to do with the fact that he always was on the lookout for UFOs when the shuttle would be in darkness but could see sunlit space nearby, like looking for satellites after sunset.
Same lesson applies to aircraft, mines and firearms. Get complacent with them, get careless, get killed. And life goes on for everyone else.
A day pack is light enough to make the difference.
Water, king cake, matches, space blanket, heat can, light, knife and garlic clove.
Papermap and compass.
Solar power pack too.
dude shes in owens valley look above her 4 runner the next morning mt whitney right there
@@Jaantoenen a garlic clove?
I enjoy just watching you be yourself Wonderhussy. I admire your integrity, your respect for other people’s property and the world in general, and your devotion to the truth. You’re one of my most favorite people.
OK Sarah I'm not going to preach to you being prepared. I've found myself in the same situation, being a man and a Marine I could do no wrong when hiking. If you got hurt it would be like one of my own children getting hurt, I would just die. That was an exceptional cabin hike, that is a place I would love to Camp for a week. Thank you for all your hard work to bring us these great places, you rock Sarah. 👍👍👍👍👍♥️🇺🇸⚘

Omg.... I haven't heard that song in 36 years. My dad passed away in 86 and he use to sing me that song all the time. Thank you! ❤
😥💔😥
keep up pushing the limits and eventually you WILL get into deep trouble. None of us want to see that happen but you are the one to take necessary supplies on hikes...or not!! An individual hiking alone is enough risk, to not have ample water, food and a back up plan....oh my
Sara you are on the edge.
She had a backup plan. That spot call an emergency helicopter device.
Please, next time, borrow water from the cabin- it was most likely clean enough and would have saved you had you faltered, fainted, and failed to get help right away. They had more than enough for themselves and the "love" people would have insisted you take the water, I am sure. lp
@@daveandrade8189 ...and if you don't want to drink it use it as a cooling agent. Pour some on yourself and let evaporation do it's thing.
@@erikk77Smartest comment so far. I will remember how usefull undrinkable water is!
@@BlueSky-ff4oy
The only sure backup plan is self-reliance, imho.
I love when you sing and drive, your the best!
Being in the desert as much as you are, I would never expect you to not take enough water on a hike.
She explained how that happened.
Whenever you don't take "extra" water & food you are not taking enough. Bc life is an unpredictable schmuck.
The first sign of heat illness is fatigue (been there, done that). For me the desert hiking outfit has evolved into oversized light colored, light weight material, long sleeve shirts and long pants, a big ball cap, preferably with the neck drape, or a big piece of light colored muslin for a shemagh. More skin exposed to the sun means more water lost out of the body. The pack holds one gallon of water, with electrolytes. Trekking poles and a headlamp for traveling at night, when the humidity is higher. Can’t be too careful out there, especially in summer. Enjoy your work; stay healthy!
Never ceases to amaze how a petite gal, such as yourself, drives and hikes around rugged places on the edge (and middle) of nowhere - alone! Just watching this episode has me wanting to crash on the couch from exhaustion (and drink a gallon of water!).
DENNIS here, age 79, skip the water but I am going to take a nap. The stamina this lady has amazes me all the time.
I’m hoping that she packs a Dirty Harry gun. It was good to hear that her sister is waiting to hear from her, cell phone and SAT phone too? I think she has said in the past. But face to face with trouble I would not doubt she’s covered.
There’s so many places she goes that I wish she wouldn’t go alone to those places. I’m sure she tells her sister where she’s going and when to expect her return.
small people can be very hyper and efficient. My whole family has women like her. They just go, go, go and they are fearless like her. American advertising tries to convince people women are weak or need male strength. Nope, as you can clearly see. Wonderhussy proves all that wrong.
Yes, a partner would help in case of snake bite, accident etc. Said that to my friend who scuba dives alone, and he is okay drowning if it happens.
This was an adventure that should have been attempted in the late Fall or winter.
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING,...AND WOULD HAVE DONE,...WERE I EVER INCLINED TO ATTEMPT THAT! (a lower temperature would make something like that, somewhat more enjoyable)!!!
It is so easy to get dehydrated. I remember one of your past videos when you went with some friends and one got very sick from either altitude, lack of water or something and another when a girl lagged behind because she was not accoustomed to the strenous hiking. I know you are very physically fit, but dehydration or an accident could be deadly. Take care. We all love you and your videos.
I'm so happy when Sarah post her video's....when I'm done watching them, I can't wait untill next week. Thank you so much wonderhussy! you always make my day!
That cabin was definitely a palace in the desert. Loved seeing the wild horses.
A pack rat midden is otherwise known as a pack rat nest. In any case, you should have taken water and food from the cabin- that is what it is there for. You could replace it another time.
That is the cleanest, tidiest cabins I have ever seen. Stay hydrated Wonderhussy. We don’t want to lose you. Thanks for the video. Keep em coming Happy Trials 👍😎👍
Most excellent adventure. Always carry more water than you think you will need is the best advice, except when water is plentiful. I have turned a few friends onto your channel because well beautiful people (a1960's 70's thing) enjoy hearing amusing diatribes about journeys. Keep on trucking/hiking.
She wasn't in as much danger as she made out. She's an experienced desert hiker so she's not inclined to lose her wits. She's day-hiked Whitney so she's in excellent shape. Thirsty and fatigued is all.
I'm never going to think of Goldilocks and the three BEARS the same way ever again.
This is the only desert cabin that I've ever seen in this pristine condition...thanks to volunteers...the remoteness keeps it from being trashed...
nice job Wonderhussy...you need a water bladder to do this kind of exploring...keep safe...
She has one! I've seen her use it on "long hikes."
Yippee!!!!!! Wonderhussy Wednesday👍🏻🥳
That was a fantastic cabin! Thanks for practically killing yourself to share with all of us!
Have a great week/weekend❤️
Hello Ed🙌
Marvelous adventure!
Nobody can say you didn't take the route less traveled.
The critters must hear you coming a mile away! LOL!!!
Every horse in that herd was looking at you . . ..
Lol ❤
All Wonderhussy videos I have seen so far have been amazing , but this one is super amazing, she pushed it close to the limit !
So much fun. You, the adventures and Carne Asada Fries ROCK! Stay hydrated, nourished, be safe. May you develop a million plus followers, and the revenue they bring. You deserve every cent! 😄
Wonderhussy... you had us all in a panic on this fun little trip! But then relief came over us and we settled with a smile, when realizing you'd still be around to post new videos! (I knew you had it all along!) Your beauty is astounding and your smile is truly cherished!
You should take a handheld GPS and extra batteries, plenty of water, such as a hydration pack, snacks, and maybe a flashlight just in case you are out in the remote desert later in the evening. You could mark the location of where you parked on the GPS so you can get back to your vehicle. Being out there alone isn't the best thing, but obviously, you made it back to your vehicle. Planning is very important.
You are still the adventurest Shara that has kept me interested in following you on all of your adventures. You make me proud to have someone like you to show me all of the wonderful places I would like to see. Thank You. 😎
Thanks for having me boondock with you. I enjoy wide open space myself.
Beeee careful!!
As someone who grew up in the Mojave, just recently (the last four to six years) I started wearing snake gaiters. Especially when I'm walking through wild desert. Rattlers just do too good of a job perfectly blending in with the ground and some don't warn you they're there. Out in the middle nowhere, away from any immediate help, to me it's just not worth the risk of a viper encounter without protection.
Don't get me started on water! 😅
Hello
And some rattlesnakes have been evolving to not rattle and give themselves. away
That cabin is amazing, props to people who put it together, that place is a gem.
The 3 Bears was comical. I laughed too hard!
You have to be more careful. I've done my share of hikes in the desert and the heat and dehydration can sneak up on you fast. I got heat exhaustion bad enough I had to get an I.V.
That is one sweet cabin! Glad you made it back safely!
I love watching your hiking shows
I also love the desert but don’t have the lungs to do
it anymore
I’m living vicariously thru you
Thank you for what you do
Andy
Hi there. I have recently found your channel. I really enjoy the adventures you go on. But more importantly your bright light that you emit into the World. Your channel is successful because of your bright personality, creativity and awesome editing. So listen to the Universe as it gave you a warning to be a more prepared Girl Scout on your next hike. As you ARE hiking in the Desert. You're an amazing Woman! Stay safe as you have so many people who love you. The World would not be the same without you. It truly wouldn't.
I have never seen such a clean cabin... what a gem. so glad you are ok... you look so tired after that big hike... and rightly so... love your videos - big hug!
Hello Debra👋
The hussy can sing . We need more !!!
What a shocking cabin! I thought for sure you walked into someones home untill you found the log book. Beautiful hike too. Thanks for takin one for the team. Excellent video
as soon as the door opened i thought the same thing.
WONDERHUSSY -YOU ARE OVER THE TOP. LOVE YOUR VIDS.
Every Wonderhussy is an experience that brightens the day.
This is one of my favorites because it’s the one where you pick your nose on camera. So cool.
Wow that cabin is amazing. You have a good voice singing the Tammy song!!
Just now seeing this video (4.13.2023) and absolutely loved it! Keep them coming, Sarah!
soo glad you survived❤
you definetly deserve to treat yerself , thx for takin us along
I'm glad that the searchers didn't have to get called out to rescue our little hussy. Luckily, we don't have to wonder what she's think of. It's definitely the desert; her one true love.
What an AWESOME find.
I had a "survival" situation this summer too. I went down to New York City for the Fourth and caught the C train at the Port Authority Bus Station. I didn't know exactly where my hotel was (had it on my phone map but distances were hard to gauge), and got off at the 4th street station onto Broadway thinking it should be an easy walk and I wanted to get out on the city streets anyway after being away for two years and only once before in this part of town. I should have gotten off at Fulton just before Brooklyn and boy did I have a walk. Well everyone knows how rare toilets are in the City but boy were my feet exhausted and the sun hot when I finally found my hotel. Not exactly life threatening to be sure, and while I could have bought a water at any corner, I did not want to overtax my bladder. But were my feet sore!
In my youth I walked a good bit of the AT and other trails. Take along at least two bottles of water (drink one in, one out) and expect to get lost whether in cactus or concrete wildernesses. Please survive Sarah Jane, there is only one Wonderhussy and you are precious to us.
There's a reason NY smells like urine. You musta been the only one not peeing in the street.
So glad you made it back from that friggin hike and we didn't have to send the Saint Bernards out after you !! Awesome cabin !! Thank you Dennis !!
WOW, This is one stocked cabin, I half expected you to find a fully stocked fridge! 😁👍✌
OK guys & gals...what a great adventure video....which deserves our support! Thanks WonderHussy, will send you some support to help pay for the gas, etc.I'm 70 and live vicariously through your travels all over our great American West. Keep on traveling, as Rick Steves likes to say. We love you!
Sarah you have a great voice. I love it when you sing. Have a great day!
Dang! Wonderhussy, you've got guts hiking up there by yourself. Great show!
Wow you had a lucky escape!!
I would imagine you would want to keep the door closed even while you are inside to keep the chance of critters from sneaking in. And you should not let pride keep you from using the provisions that were at the cabin.
Agreed both counts.
I also felt uneasy about the open door. Could almost hear the stealthy sounds of little rodent foot prints entering the cabin... They are such opportunists - yikes!
I’m glad everything turned out well and you’re safe and thank you for the smiles that you give me every time I watch one of your videos
Glad everything worked out. Having miscalculated the distance from Point A to Point B a few times myself, I know how elated you must have felt when you finally got back to your car! Looking forward to many, many more wonderful adventures!
You were nowhere near the second spring at the head of the canyon. There used to be a jeep road to this prospect but once the area was designated as wilderness it has all but vanished. It constantly amazes me how different the terrane looks from ground level.
So glad your safe ... I think it's a fabulous cabin but yeah Its a scary to run out of water in the dessert ... Be safe... Goldilocks ....
I really do enjoy your videos thank you for bringing them. I continue to look forward to all your next adventures. You have a lot of courage. I don’t think I could do what you’re doing. But I do enjoy watching them. I used to live in the southwest and I enjoyed it immensely I went to every city in town in Arizona where are used to live in Phoenix. I saw a lot and even got to Mexico a few times. But I was always with friends and never alone. Keep bringing the great videos I’ll keep watching. Thank you! Good stuff!
More is always better than less. I'd rather have it, and not need it, than to need it, and not have it. Extra water, even if you think, It shouldn't take too long, is always a good Idea. Even having as many miles as Wonderhussy has put in, dehydration can sneak up on any of us. Real glad you're safe.
Mahalos for trekking waaay out into the desert and risking death to reveal such a wonderful and well cared for and loved cabin. Some of us need something to look forward to in this crazy dysfunctional world to get by. (Love the hat in black, it looks great on you if navy blue isn't available.) The desolate cabin is really amazing, and hopefully whoever went through the trouble will cross paths with you someday, and you will learn more about it, and why it is so special to them.
Young people are careless. Old people are careful.
With your angelic voice please sing all you would like. Especially such a wonderful song as Tammy.
Getting "lost" is really known as "Trail Development" 😆
Incredible cabin..dangerous journey..Your One Brave Lady ! Please be careful Sarah. God Bless (I Pray for your protection. )
Lee Vining is one of my favorite places on earth! Thanks for wearing the hat!!!
That cabin a true oasis in the desert.
Loved your singing, one of my favorite songs since I was little.
Gurl’ , your singing really got’ me’ ‘vibrating’ ⚡️🤣🐸
Good thing the three bears did not come home. (LOL!!). It really looks like someone has moved in. AWESOME cabin. Worth the hike!!
Glad you made it back to camp safely next time take more water and trail snacks. Incredible cabin you found. Thanks for your hard work in bringing us along with you. Many more safe travels wonderhussy.
❤️5 HOUR ENERGY I LOVE
What an outstanding cabin big cheers to the people who look after it
That was a well rounded trip. Glad you didn't collapse trying to reach that fantastic cabin.
They're old radio advertising used to say, "I'd walk a mile for a Camel!"
George Carlin had fun with that one.
In case you don’t already do this, consider carrying a Life Straw water filter.
Wow! Impressed again your desert navigation skills, great video!
What an amazing surprise 😲!!!
Wow! Wifey and I have never seen you get your butt kicked! A humbling reminder that Mother Nature's don't care! Glad you persevered!
Gotta be honest, Huss. There are some outdoorsers on UA-cam I've quit watching because they frequently exercise poor judgment or make horror-movie bad decisions. You're much smarter than that so I know you'll learn from this one. The desert doesn't give many second chances. I got heat stroke once while bushwacking in Nevada, after making the exact same mistakes and miscalculations you did. Every arroyo looked the same and doing multiplication tables in my head was the only thing that kept me upright and moving until I finally found my car. Took months to fully recover. Please stay safe. Like everyone else has said: water, food, shelter, rest!
Stupendous videography and story-telling. Glad you made it out!
1:47 You have an enjoyable singing style !!!!
Hi Sarah Jane, well that was fast drop. Thank you. I love the entertainment from years gone by. Dino
EMP. She is lost. Love to watch Wonder Hussy. She is beautiful, energetic and fun.
My daughter's bedroom got a makeover back in the early 90's and I bought her that bedding. I took one of the shams to the local hardware store and got all the colors matched to paint and took sponges and copied the print of the bedding onto the wall behind her bed. It looked really cool. Awesome cabin!! Thank you Wonderhussy!!
Oh how entertaining you are. I laugh so hard my stomach aches. Ty
Glad you made it back well! I have just recently discovered your channel and enjoying it very much! Stay safe and stay well and keep the adventure going! Please.
Interesting mix of trees in the area and so green. Love how you broke into song about the cottonwood and Tammy. You are so cute when you do that! Yikes that is a hard long trek with no food and little water! You are a brave, amazing, crazy young lady. Glad you made it safely. Love the cute tea kettle! The surprising interior of the cabin is amazing and comfy looking!! Well supplied! Love the saying you found and read( and the universe said). Wow everything was back packed up. The logbook had a lot of entries. Nice you left a page entry. One of things I love about you is how caring and good about the places you visit! It is nice you blocked out the name. Glad you made it back safely! That is one of things that I personally concerned about you is if you get into situation where you can't get back to safety and your car!! Stay safe😂!! I bet you slept well ! So sad you could not get to the Burger Barn after your long trek! Aww you have your colorful robe and enjoyed your Hotsprings. I love your hats!!
I think all the different hat colours look good on you tbh Sarah, it's nice to mix it up. Great adventure this one was. Take it easy ✌🏼❤️😁
Dreaming hot springs tonight.❤
So glad you're ok❤
Have been looking forward to this one (and all your other videos of course :>). On a different topic, I have been listening to the audiobook for Death Valley in '49 like you mentioned in your episode about that. It's been a very interesting listen, thanks for pointing out that history story.
I love your content. Please consider getting together with an adventure-minded posse when you take on these risky outings. Other vloggers I watch do this and the group interaction adds to the viewing experience. I am not questioning your survival skills but sometimes the unexpected can happen. Cheers.
