I think the thin line is, WHY does your media have this "mature" content? Something like Hatred IS an example of an empty cash grab trying to sell itself on 2edgy4me controversy with no real point to it. But there's a difference between "this sucks and you probably shouldn't have made it" and "you shouldn't be ALLOWED to make this". For Harvester, there's a very clear purpose to it, and while I don't think it's all in good taste even with the excuse of satire, I can respect that there's a vision.
having done my thesis on the moral panic of the 80's/90's, i have to say Harvester captured it well. people (mostly over-concerned parents) just CONSTANTLY scapegoated on new forms of media (the rise of DND, heavy metal, video games) while ignoring the more legitimate issues...despite coming out a little late, these irrational moral panics are certainly still relevant. great video, btw!

I've watched a few videos about Harvester, and I gotta say, yours is by far and away my favorite. I love this video so much, ive seen a lot of vids abt harvester but they usually just tell you what steve does during the week and rush through the end game calling it dumb and poorly implemented but you explained with detail every character and also mentioned the allegories of the endgame
That’s part of why I was really excited to cover this game! I’ve seen a lot of people write it off as dumb or just violent… but I’ve always really appreciated it and don’t think it gets enough credit for how clever it actually is haha.
Another way of looking at it is that the game is actually dumb and poorly implemented. It's all over the place tonally. There's a lot of amateurish writing that pads out the playthrough because the whole idea of violence in media is too shallow, nobody could sink teeth into it. Why have a long preachy segment if it's a serial killer simulation? To whitewash a lot of random gory and violent bits? I think so. Why so much wackiness' if the ending is so straight-faced about the simulation and the serial killer stuff? A normal person just gets disgusted with this content and presentation.

@@early-tv thank you so much for making this video btw, Early. You uncovered stuff that I totally missed in the game, for example I never thought to type about the peephole and confront Stephanie and the dad about it 👍 really awesome stuff
I think that 'I Have No Mouth and Must Scream' is much more disturbing than Harvester. It is less...clumsy, in how it applies the hatred and agony. I also find many Japanese horror games to be much more intense than western ones, especially those of the eroge variety.
When Loomis start saying how that broomstick went up In him I fuking lost it it was funny asf!!!! 😂 all the times I looked at retrospectives about this game never heard that line.
It was the mid-90s, so being a proto Redditor was counter culture to boomers/soccer moms screaming about everything being Satanic. That said the Satanic Panic boomers at least had justified reasons to exist (read about the Finders) before they devolved into ban Heavy Metal/Pokemon/Harry Potter.
I would say that the game is great. The first part when exploring the town is the best part of the game. It does go downhill when you go into the Lodge with the combat. Other people have already looked into the game in the eyes of a game designer but I will say it anyways, the first part you are not really doing any combat. Sure you can, but there are no controls or teachable moments that you could fight someone to death. With the Lodge being info dump to info dump that normally ends in a fight, it does leave the player more braindead than paying any sort of attention. I think if it wasn't rushed it would have been a more smoother game. But overall, still a great game and wonderful to see anyone that haven't played it play it.
I think it would have been a bit more digestible if the game wasn’t split 50/50 between adventuring and combat. The last bit with all the fights shoehorned in can be a bit of a slog.
I watched a playthrough of this game when I was definitely too young to be watching it but I've loved it ever since then. I love to see people still talking about this game the vibes are so weird and scary its immaculate horror.
I’m 20 minutes into the video and this has me so intrigued that I might have to buy it and play it before finishing the video especially seeing that it’s less than £1 on steam
It’s a crazy experience! It can be slightly frustrating sometimes but nothing terrible, definitely worth a playthrough especially since there are so many different options 😆

Thank you, I really appreciate it!! Happy Halloween!! 🎃
It's so strange how this video turned out to be one of my comfort videos. Your voice is so soothing, and while the contents of this game are so disturbing, I'm always so weirdly drawn to how absurdly dark it is.
I've listened to this video like 3 times already. Great work! :)
I think "Decrepit" fits that game better than "violent".
Ah harvester, what an awkward piece of 90's FMV nostalgia.
First video of yours I’ve consumed.
And it was very well put together! Sub earned!
Tried to stream this game before and Chat just did not get the hype 😢 I really loved this game, disturbed me to the core
It’s definitely not for everyone and I totally understand why. I’ve always loved the atmosphere in this game though, it’s so unique haha. One of my fav games.
48:48 the bird disappears 🤣
lil peek 👁️🫦👁️
I was waiting for the lodge guy to say, "I'm gonna get you Gadget!"
When Loomis start saying how that broomstick went up In him I fuking lost it it was funny asf!!!! 😂 all the times I looked at retrospectives about this game never heard that line.
So many of those lodge rooms just feel like you're trapped in a room with redditors my goodness
23:22 this dude must know the mystery of the druids
Nice video, Harvester's covered a LOT and this had fresh takes, great details and spot on jokes!
"Tonight, the bake sale commences..." 😂
great video. don't appreciate the cheeseburger jumpscare with no warning, however.
🍔
Whoa watch out here comes another one
This is a very good breakdown of the game's themes, good job. Earned yourself a sub.
Why does UA-cam keep suggesting your videos to me from time to time. And why do they have so few views with such excellent quality?
I watched a playthrough of this game when I was definitely too young to be watching it but I've loved it ever since then. I love to see people still talking about this game the vibes are so weird and scary its immaculate horror.
something hilarious about hearing Dr. Claw say "Tonight the bake sale commences."
@@early-tv the game is bonkers but I’m loving it
It is quite funny how Dad's room is censored and after the mum/shotgun bit it's not ... can see all that spicy detail!
It was then I realized the hope for monetization was but a pipe dream and I didn’t finish any censoring from then on out 🤣🤣
@@early-tv Fair play. I can imagine censoring those cheeks, and nonsense would be mentally draining. Still a brilliant video.
This is a hell of a video to start off with watching. Love your sense of humor and commentary! Subscribed!
Oh my favorite bird youtuber (Yes, even above Shammy) has posted :D and in time for some ultimate spookyness? :O
Hey, just discovered your channel thanks to being a fan of this game. And I have to say, I really dig your style of videos. You're honest with your thoughts, give the game time to speak for itself with the footage, and you're pretty funny to boot. Legit, you're one of the most underrated people on this platform, and for that, you've earned yourself a like fam.
😎👍
VR for serial killer training...was not on my inho card for this game...
