    This is a superb cursory breakdown of the round kick. When I studied TKD (in the late 80's and early 90's) I had to learn power and variations by meticulous trial and error. Back then, more often than not, I met folks who never learned how to use the translational and angular momentum of the body or how to recruit larger core muscle groups to generate power. Done properly, a round kick can deliver tremendous power with surprisingly little movement and seemingly little effort. I was 5'8" and 138 lbs but I was known for having a round kick that hit like a hickory plank. I noticed many bad round kicks coordinated as if the guy was swinging the weight of his leg with just the strength of his hip as if he were using his leg like a club. (I called them, “bucket kicks”, because they had all the wasted energy and efficacy of swinging a bucket of water) I learned how to vary the lead step and pivot to alter timing, angle and power. I experimented with my body mechanics to discover multiple ways to deliver this kick. Back then it was hard to find instructors that could explicitly break this down for you - you simply practiced and sparred until you either got it or you didn't. I think round kicks are beautiful when done properly. Back when I was in top form I felt I could repeat round kicks on the heavy bag with power indefinitely while a lot of other guys were weary from kicking improperly. It’s not fancy or flashy but there’s so much wonderful subtlety in this class of kicks. Now, decades later, I see a lot of folks in MMA throwing proper round kicks, that might not look impressive to an untrained eye, but I can tell have power. But back the early 90’s that kind of knowledge, skill and conditioning was like having a secret weapon.

    • @danielhounshell2526
      @danielhounshell2526 4 роки тому +1

      A lot of TKD guys have a bad habit of getting to the chamber, then kicking, rather than making it one natural, continuous motion like it should be. Some kicks do need you to do that, such as a side kick or hook kick, but most don't. Having that bend in your leg as you kick does give you a bit more power though, and a full chamber can allow you to trick your opponent, or even check a kick.

    Chambered round kick is heavily used in ShanShou as well. My ShanShou coach exclusively teaches chambered round kick instead of Muay Thai roundhouse. But after a couple of months of training in MT I found Thai Roundhouse much easier to excute and land in practice and generally deliver more damage.

    Awesome kicking pal after watching the leg break clips it's put me off kicking lol only joking I use the defences to leg kicks lol kickers love em I try and step in to stop space and angles to the kicker to grab and push etc I try and take the centre line of the body through the head to the feet like a steel pole through the head to the the floor .nice video mate as always but for me I use the video for techniques and also counters to it I think to be a kicker most important is speed because your at some point your on one foot and some kicks both feet are off the floor back kicks you're heads facing the wrong way.sorry it's me being me lol.im 44 now so high kicks I don't bother with. going to train the technique in the video you put up awesome for power and low kicking in the street total destruction technique total respect for you Ramsey as always true martial artist 👀👂👍

    Hey Ramsey, quick question for you. I train boxing but I’m Chinese. Weight lifting helps me gain muscle in my arms, legs and chest but my hands and wrists stay small. I’m told thin wrists increases my risk of injury and lowers my punching power. How do I get around this? Any way to increase wrist size?

  • @worstresponder
    @worstresponder 6 років тому

    Interesting you how you said to throw your body forward into the round kick. At my Muaythai gym they teach use to arc your body back while throwing it. By leaning back you engage your leg muscles more and you have more balance. Plus you stay a little bit out of reach of your opponents counter pouch. Though having said that your method engages you torso muscles and could possibly be slightly quicker. I'll have to try it out next time I'm sparring.

    Question - I come from a tkd background, and was always taught to swing the leg so that the power transfers from the turning of the hip down to the foot, like you're trying to fling your flip flop. (We were still taught to connect with the shin) Recently I've been exposed to more Thai style kicks where the knee leads the foot and instead of "rolling" the force down the shin, the leg is straightened almost like a side kick. Both seem to hit quite hard, but they seem to be a different quality of force. Thoughts?

  • @rfllnsdlvr
    @rfllnsdlvr 6 років тому

    hi, ramsey. i've been practicing krav maga for some years BUT i'm love with your videos. you're absolutely right about your thoughts on self defense (one must be aware of its limits and not be overconfident about one's skills by training not realistic fights). however, here where i live i think the krav maga gym is the most appropriate for my purposes on martial arts and it seems to me that it can help me on simple self defenses situations (nothing about knives, guns, multiple atackers etc).
    this video on kicking power was wonderful. thanks a lot and here comes a doubt that i hope you answer: what do you think of kicking using for impact the ball of the foot instead of the shin? at my krav maga school i learned that for not-fighting-athlets-who-train-100-kicks-per-leg-every-day, the ball of the foot is less prone to accidents as those you have showed on this video since the bone of the ball of the foot is more resistent than the shin. what's your opinion on that?
    one more time, thank you for your videos and congratulations for your work!

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  6 років тому +1

      Round kicks with the ball of the foot require a great deal more practice than shin kicks. It’s going to be a much lower percentage attack most of the time, and unless you correctly articulate your feet, you run a high risk of breaking multiple bones in the foot. The bones of the foot are much more fragile than the shin.
      You might think that a sturdy reinforced shoe would solve this problem, however, such shoes would inhibit your ability to flex your foot correctly to land a round kick with the ball of the foot and cause you to kick with your toes instead.

    • @HardHardMaster
      @HardHardMaster 5 років тому

      Ramsey Dewey with feet wearing shoes, flexing your toes won't be an issue though and in fact for selfdefense, kicking certain parts of your opponent with the point of your shoe is very effective. btw toes can be conditioned to a certain point to safely and very effectively strike soft targets like the stomach, groin, and (although it's quite high level) even the throat. they need to be tensed on impact though and for many people this is hard to learn (shoes will negate this difficulty though). it's not a mystical fantasy technique, it really does work and it is practical if properly trained, and being kicked in the gut with such a ''spear'' foot turns you inside out.
      barefoot I've always found chambered head or torso (ribs, liver, kidneys) roundhouse kicks with the ball of the foot the fastest, most comfortable and for the torso targets the most effective. maybe there's also a certain tiny angle, distance and speed advantage to it.
      for leg kicks the shin is usually the most correct weapon, since legs are mostly tough and move fast so it takes a very high degree of speed and accuracy to use other striking points than the shin safely and effectively (not counting throwing knees to the upper legs for the short distance).
      I want to add that using the ball of the foot forces you to tense your ankle and foot which helps avoid damage. a lot of kickboxers and thaiboxers and TKDka kick with floppy feet, which in my point of view is always bad. plus if you miss a roundhouse kick with a stretched out foot just enough, the bridge or end of your foot may graze some hard part of your opponent and cause damage to your foot or ankle. striking with the ball of your foot prevents this risk.
      gotta add also I'm originally from the kyokushin and ashihara old school which might explain my point of view, but I have many many years in other styles and systems under my belt(s) as well, including TKD.
      I'm sincerely curious as to your opinion on everything I just said about kicks.

  • @romanporsche9455
    @romanporsche9455 6 років тому

    Quick question/ statement. I've never heard anyone make this point so I'll bring it to you. Do you feel that comparing martial arts such as BJJ and other B.S. (Belt system) Martial arts to Boxing and Muay Thai is difficult because Box/Thai Boxing don't typically use (B.S.?) When I see Black Belt Judo vs. Wrestling or TKD vs. MT it's always difficult when the latter lose, if they lose because there is no real way to justify or quantity how good that person "should" be. The requirements to go amateur versus the requirements to receive a black belt are extremely different. DO you have an opinion on this subject matter?

      i've seen more and more people use the low leg kicks in mma lately (i.e. below knee level), which funny enough is what I used to like, with my very limited experience, back when people would tell me that's not a great kick. You can't check a kick that's already lower than your high shin , obviously, though it's comparatively easier to dodge the kick by retreating the lead leg. It's much less risky though, I used it like a jab basically.

      You know one thing I'm seeing that I have heard some cotraversy is how you swing your arm out, do you feel like that leaves you open slightly if an opponent knows you are going to drop your guard as you swing your arm? One comment made a dabbing reference. I see you cover your face as you do it but you could still generate power without swinging so wide I feel, but that's just my personal opinion. You are older and probably fight alot more than I do but perhaps this detail will still prove to be useful to you!

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  6 років тому +1

      It absolutely does leave an opening, just as you pointed out! That’s another reason why it’s crucial to step to an angle off the centerline as you kick to avoid a counter strike.
      Yes, you can generate plenty of power without swinging an arm- but a lot of people have a very difficult time doing it.

      Pfffffff.
      I would install rockets on my feet, so when I want to kick I press a button in my hand and my leg goes BAMMMMMM. Like in Teken movie. Oh, I would get a surgery and get some steal plates on my shin so it doesn't break.

    Hey I love your channel. I have a question. I’ve been training TKD for the last two years under a 9th degree grandmaster. He thinks that kicking with the instep is foolish and that we only do it because of tournament rules. He said that if you ever actually needed to hit someone with a round kick you should use the ball of your foot ( sort of like a front kick turned on its side). He said with regard to shin kicks “your shin is a bat but the ball of your foot is a hammer”. This makes a lot of sense to me considering that the ball of your foot is the most durable part of your body (you can run and jump on it)! I don’t think that I’ve seen ball of the foot round kicks used much in MMA or professional kick boxing. Is there a reason for this. I know that my teachers’s father has beaten professional Thai boxers and I believe that he learned this technique from him.

    Damn so many snapped shins in one video. Make sure to condition your shins. Damn this makes me scared i have long legs and kinda thin shin bone. I need super conditioned shins.

      You need to set up your kicks so they don’t get checked. This can happen to anyone.

    My legs just broke from watching that. Gosh, that was brutal. That successful leg kick at 04:01 also looked like more like his opponent went home with a shattered meniscus and multiple ligaments torn than with "just" pain.
