Something that I noticed while hearing mauler mention Boromir's role as a protector, is that in the final battle Boromir doesn't have his SHIELD. A tool mainly used for protecting. He left his shield behind (that's how Aragorn noticed that Boromir is missing) to go after Frodo. Symbolically abandoning his role as a protector to chase after the ring. In the final battle he only uses his sword(still to protect Merry and Pippin) but if he still had his shield, if he retained his role, he might've been able to survive Lurtz's arrows(maybe). This is just another tragic and excellent detail for Boromir's character. God I love these movies!

18:43 Pippin is clearly not the brightest of the 4 hobbits, but I love that they gave him this little moment to deliver some compassionate words of wisdom. He sees how so much of Faramir's self worth is tied up in his father's perception. In a way it mirrors his own self-doubt given how much Gandalf initially berates him for his incompetence. Pippin also has strength of a different kind.

But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.

But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea’s mouth.

Ooh, a supercut of the sons of Denethor! I’ll admit that as a wee child viewing the trilogy more than a decade ago, I held a rather low opinion of Boromir and next to no opinion on Faramir. It is thanks in no small part to the elucidating exploits of Longman and company that my opinions on the trilogy in general and the brothers in particular have both been heightened dramatically.

Two of the most amazing people I've ever seen in any media I've experienced. So many layers of characterization, so much emotional impact, and every single thing connects beautifully to form such a deep story.
I latched onto Faramir first as a kid, because of my dad's experience. Having been similarly treated by his own father, and after watching the Vietnam War needlessly consume so many lives, he identified quite heavily with Faramir. The reluctant soldier, with qualities too often ignored or cast aside.
Now, as an adult, I still shed tears not only as Boromir fights beyond the fear of death and ultimately falls in defense of the hobbits, but also when Faramir is pointlessly sent to his death after being told he's worth nothing in his own father's eyes. Both are simply masterpieces in storytelling and character writing.

We can only imagine that at Dagor Dagorath, when all of Good and Evil are to fight one last time, that Boromir and Faramir aid Aragorn in helping beat back the forces of Morrgoth and Sauron so that Turin can drive Gurthang into Morgoth’s heart.

Regarding Boromir or Faramir going to the Council, in the book, it's pretty clear that the Powers That Be intended for Faramir to go. Faramir had a dream several times with a prophecy telling him to go looking for the Ring and the rightful king of Gondor in Rivendell, and his efforts to tell Denethor about it fell on deaf ears. Finally, whoever was sending Faramir the dreams gave up and sent the dream to Boromir, and when he told Denethor, he was allowed to go. Boromir had an adventure of his own getting to Rivendell, but he won through. Basically Boromir went to Rivendell because the Valar went to Gondor asking "Can Faramir come out and play?" and Denethor refused to let him. So it just might be that things would have gone better if Faramir had been allowed to go, as per the original plan. OTOH, his conversion, and presumptive survival, would not have swayed Denethor much. Faramir letting the Ring be sent to destruction in Mordor, or acknowledging Aragorn as the rightful king, would not have had much impact on Denethor, and only confirmed his worst suspicions about the "wizard's pupil" his son had become. And if Boromir snatched up Frodo, Sam and Gollum in the wilderness of Ithilien, IDK that he would have let them go as Faramir did.
Also, at the Council, the thought was floated that Rohan might be in league with Sauron and providing his armies (and the Ringwraiths) with horses, and Boromir shut that down straight off, saying no way the Rohirrim would ever serve Sauron or give their horses to an evil master.

IT's certainly far from the best of the Netflix shows, but it's not as boring as Jessica Jones, at least. The biggest issue with Season 1 was just how little fighting there was for the majority of it. IT needed an additional antagonist for the early parts of the season. Some lackey of some sort.

Boromir and Faramir work so well because of how human they are. Aragorn is closer to John Heroman, and basically a superhuman in the LotR setting, but those two encapsulate so much of the common man fighting this seemingly unstoppable darkness. Their combined story being a more classic tragedy.
Boromir obviously standing out the most, especially due to how well characterized he is. He genuinely cares for the hobbits, and while his "antagonism" and inevitable fall is displayed pretty clearly, it's given context to make you understand why. All to end in a heroic, but still tragic, sacrifice that also helps push Aragorn's character forward as well.
Really, I think a lot of it also just goes to Sean Bean as an actor. My mind always goes to him voicing Martin Septim in Oblivion. While the main quest is pretty basic, Martin was always a highlight for me due to how well his VA work is done.
