      She didn't refuse to change, she literally couldn't, because Master fried her regeneration ability, apparently.
      Also, that's really fitting - Missy turned good, but Doctor never discovered that, so she also did it without witnesses, without the reward.

    • @AubreySciFi

      @GhostPlay - Oh the Master will be back at some point. The Master always finds a way to come back. The Master spent years as a withered husk at one point searching for a way to extend his life and/or restart his regeneration process. The Master always finds a way to go on living. That's why I found that BS of him refusing to regenerate during the 10th Doctor's run so ridiculous. It seemed so out of character. Although these two stabbing each other in the back certainly works.

      @TeeJayDesastron 5 років тому +2

      @@epiccarrot88 Well, since she evidently remembered to bring that piece of tech with her she may just as well have remembered what happened later on and took some countermeasures. The Master aka Missy is a long time character of the show and usually has a trick or two up his/her sleeve.

      @epiccarrot88 5 років тому

      @@TeeJayDesastron I mean, she really didn't remember much about what happened. It's the same reason the Doctor never really remembers what happened when he meets one of his past selfs. When you time travel your memory tends to get hazy when you cross your own timeline.

    You know, with the exception of Paul McGann not getting at least 1 television season as The Doctor, the biggest "what if" missed opportunity Doctor Who will ever have was Capaldi not getting a 4th season as The Doctor with Missy as his companion (alongside Bill and Nardole). I feel that would have been the ultimate TARDIS team as you would have the tragic hero (Capaldi knowing it's his final season), the romantic foil (Missy trying to be The Doctor's friend again), the exposition (Bill), and the likable comic relief (Nardole).

    Growing up Capaldi was a huge fan of Doctor Who, specifically the First Doctor. During Capaldi's run we've seen him bring back so many old school elements of the show like the stern grumpy side of the Doctor, and the classic Daleks, mondasian Cybermen and a bearded Master. For Capaldi's last episode it made sense for him to share screen time with his favourite Doctor, the First Doctor, which is pretty much why they brought David Bradley back considering he played the part so well in that Docu-drama.

He’s written by far the most stories of any writer, and only one was a pretty big miss for me (Doctor, Widow, Wardrobe). AubreySciFi I’ve never been bothered by his approach to the First Doctor. It’s just a bit of fun, and we know it’s not really supposed to be taken too seriously. He could’ve removed maybe a couple of the sexist jokes, but outside of those comments I think his use and portrayal of the First Doctor is pretty well done. He also gave him a better final line.

      @@lucasdolding6924- Not meant to be taken seriously? That's not the way I read his performance there. (Not totally David Bradley's fault of course. He was written and directed to do it that way.) but, If that episode was your only experience of the first Doctor you'd think he was a sexist douche bag. And as someone who's seen his era I don't think it does Hartnell's Doctor justice. I wondered why companion Bill even bothered to hug him near the end as he'd been such a jerk the whole time. And this adventure was taking place at the end of his run not the beginning. Hartnell had an arc going from touchy and sometimes abrasive to warm and endearing but one who never suffered fools and could sass people who needed it. (But Hartnell always counterpointed it with humor that offset the negatives even in the early days. I saw none of that in Bradley's performance in TUAT, or the recreated scenes in AAISAT. I get the impression that he never reviewed Hartnell's episodes or he would have seen that. The only performance of his as the First Doctor that really was spot on IMO was for his Big Finish adventures. "The First Doctor Box set". Anyway, it's up to opinion either way, and if you were satisfied with TUAT, that's fine.

    One of the things I love about Peter Capaldi as the Doctor is his passionate speeches. The way he delivers them got to me more than any speech by Matt Smith or David Tennant. Him telling the Masters why he does what he does spoke to me as a person who tries to do the right thing.

    Ah... Well here we go, nearly there. You have definitely watched the second part by now and are probably on the next Doctor.
    This finale was the hardest for me, largely because Peter struck a cord with me that no doctor ever had. I grew up watching Doctor who when it started in 2005. 10 was my undisputed favourite until series 8. 12 didn't click with me for a long time, but just through dialogue with him and Clara everything clicked and made sense. His character ark is I would say, undisputedly the best Doctor who has ever had. Look at him in the Episode "into the Dalek" when he treats people like collateral's, and look at him in this episode. And it all makes sense, they way he has grown, and how he has done it.
    This was supposed to be 12's final episode, but the new showrunner was not ready to start, and if they didn't have an episode they would have lost their slot on Christmas Day (which it turns out didn't matter because the new showrunner Chibnall said they had "ran out of ideas" for Christmas specials - but anyway) Moffatt said he would do one last episode at the last episode (to save Christmas!), and we got Twice Upon a time.
    You are absolutely right about Missy, Gomez was fantastic - my favourite incarnation of The Master Point blank. Regardless of how people feel about Jodie as the Doctor, Michelle Gomez proved, changing a Time Lords gender can be absolute perfection. Missy was and always will be truly glorious.
    One of the saddest things is that the Doctor will never know that Missy was on her way back to help him. That cuts deep
    Thank you for sharing your reactions with us

    Wonderful reaction to one of the best stories in Doctor Who history!
    Nice little fun fact: the former companions "speaking to him" ("DOCTOR!" "DOCTOR!"...) is a nice reference back to the 4th Doctors regeneration into the 5th at the end of "Logopolis"!

    There are so many callbacks to classic Who in this episode. The flashbacks to previous companions echoes the regeneration from Tom Baker (#4) to Peter Davidson (#5). The Master was in that story too. Logopolis was the episode. Hard to believe that was all the way back on 21 March 1981. Would you like a Jelly Baby? :)

    Well, Capaldi's first Doctor when he was watching the series as a kid was William Hartnell's Doctor, and he's also a fan of the Mondasian Cybermen. So, Peter got two presents at the end of his run. Being in an episode with the 1st Doctor and being in an episode featuring the 1st generation Cybermen. Also we had a nice call-back to two classic series regeneration related stories in the final TARDIS scene of this episode. When the Doctor flashes back on his companions that was a nod to the 4th Doctor's Regeneration scene in "Logopolis" (Now available on Blu-Ray, in the season 18 box set!). And when he wakes up and says "Sontarans, perverting the course of human history!" that was the first line that Tom Baker's 4th Doctor ever said post regeneration in "Robot" (Also, now on Blu-Ray in the season 12 box set!). Then of course the obvious new Who regeneration references "I don't want to go" and "When the Doctor was me".

    About David Bradley being in it: there was an interview with Steven Moffat where he says exactly how he got the idea. He was struggling with ideas for a Christmas special as he had planned for the series finale to have Peter Capaldi's regeneration. Then at some convention there was a fan question about bringing back previous Doctors. He said he would like to see the personality clash with the first Doctor, but joked that "William Hartnell doesn't return our calls" (he died in 1975), at which point Peter Capaldi suggested David Bradley. At that point Steven Moffat realised exactly what to do for a Christmas special.

    It was Capaldi who gave Moffat the idea of bringing David Bradley back to play the 1st Doctor.
    It was an iterview at New York ComicCon one year. Moffat talked about how he thought it was a shame that William Hartnell was dead because he couldn't return to the show, and Capaldi casually said that you could get David Bradley instead. Moffat thought "yeah, you could"...and did.
    The footage of that exchange is on UA-cam somewhere.

  • @Domino2097

    at Comic Con once Steven Moffat was asked what he would most want to do if he could do anything and that was to do a episode with the first doctor.... Peter then replied "Why don't we just get David Bradley then?" and there you go Twice Upon a Time.... although this episode also wasn't meant to be as Peter was suppose regenerate in this episode but Chris Chibnall decided he didn't want his first episode as show runner to be a Christmas special so Steven finally got his wish due to happenstance

      I agree. The same type of people (not necessarily the _exact_ people, but the same _type)_ were shitcanning everything that Steven Moffat did after RTD left and now they're singing his praises and have turned their negativity toward Chris Chibnall and Jodie.
      Here's a prediction: Fast forward 4 or 5 years and these same types of people will be whining about the _next_ showrunner and whoever the Doctor is while talking about Chibnall and Jodie in the highest regard. It happens every time like clockwork.

    Great reaction, hope you survived the xmas special and Peter's/Moffat/Gatiss/Murray Gold/ Everybody's goodbye. I'm sure you know by know, but basically Doctor1 didn't want to regenerate at the end of his run (which featured the Mondassian Cybermen) there is a continuity gap in the episode as filmed/shown on TV between when he defeated the Cybermen, and then suddenly was in the TARDIS regenerating into Doctor2, so the was neatly tied into that. Also, Peter Capaldi always wanted to be in an episode featuring the Mondassian Cybermen, and Stephen Moffat really delivered in these two! Peters' speech was awesome, the end of the Master/Missy, so apt.

    What makes the Doctor's final stand feel so impactful is that we so rarely ever see him in direct line-of-fire. The Doctor often only beats his enemies by outsmarting them, either by talking them down or turning their plans back on them; the fact he's facing these Cybermen head-on shows you that he's _finally_ out of options, that the only thing he _can_ do is fight until he dies.
