Yes M103 is a wonderfull engine I owned a 300SEL with the 3.0L M103 engine, it was quite fast and even economical. about 1 litre per 10~11 Km I still have regrets for selling it....
In 2024, I regularly (every Saturday) drive my 1984 280SE along the expressways at 130kph for an hour at a time. It uses fuel - but the suspension and engine composure is sublime.
The Mercedes 6 cylinder is a great engine. The 260SE wasn’t available in the UK, I had a W124 300E which was an amazing car. I was always envious of W126 S class Mercedes.

It seems to me that the engine reaches those speeds without putting in much effort, but that is thanks to the improved aerodynamics. Wow, the Mercedes Benz engineers did a good job.
Don't use brake boost, it just makes the gearbox go crazy and shifts way too early and that only makes the 0-100 time slower. Just give full throttle, no brake.. Nice video!

I had like 11-12 L/km, but I am a faster driver. You can probably drive it below 10L if you hyper mile it. I know a guy with a 560 sel 299hp version he is at a minimum of 15L/100km even while watching his gas foot. Downtown 20+ is easily possible.

Lot of people in Germany prefer the 2.8 over the 2.6 because it has more power. They are reliable engines. I personally prefer the looks of the 2. series, so I would go wtih the 300SE. But overall all these engines are easy to fix and spare parts are cheap available. One of the cheapest ways to drive a good car is to drive one of them old Mercedes W190, W124 or W126. Saludos
The M110 engine is high revving and noisy. It goes through valve stem seals and guide rails. Many ppl like it. I find it too noisy for refined, relaxed driving.

I would just like to point out that since you drive vintage cars so fast, always check your tires before you ride them to see if they arent 20 years old :-) Because then it can backfire very badly at 200km/h, because they just don't hold up. Ich hatte damals einen Opel Senator 3.0 mit 177ps der war eine Rakete neben diese Schlaftabletten Mercedes 😂. Bei 210kmh waren erst Mal ca 4200umdrehungen der ist laut Tacho über 260 gelaufen. Auch nur 4gang Aut. Gewesen aber komplett lang und anders übersetzt. Autobahn Fahrten mit 180kmh usw waren sehr angenehm und komfortabel
Doesn't it feel underpowered with that tiny 2600 cc engine? I drove a W124 260E once and I was a bit disappointed by the lack of low down torque. Maybe that's why I prefer diesels (now driving a 25 year old W202 C220 CDI automatic).
It's enough for regular traffic, but it could be more. That's probably why people prefer the 300SE. If you want high torque on a petrol engine you need to go for a V8 at least. I love the W202 my first car was a C280 Sport.

Du hast anscheinend null Ahnung von Motorentechnik. Ein Verbrennungsmotor braucht regelmäßig längere Volllast- oder nahezu Volllastfahrten, damit sich Verbrennungsrückstände, Oxidationen und sonstige Ablagerungen lösen können und verbrannt werden. Ständiges niedertouriges Rumschleichen und Abrufen von minimaler Leistung ist der Tod für jeden Verbrennungsmotor. Kann ich dir den Kanal Motorenzimmer ans Herz legen, er erklärt das in mehreren seiner Videos. Dem Wagen geht es im übrigen heute noch hervorragend. Du kannst dir sicher sein das alle Fahrzeuge vorher warm gefahren wurden und keine Service Rückstände haben.
Wann wird das Material am meisten belastet? Richtig, wie der Name bereits sagt, bei Volllast. Mach das regelmäßig mit einem neuen Auto und schau mal, wie lange das Ding hält. Viel Spaß beim Ausprobieren.
For Chauffeur Service in Cities it is optimal- I loved it in the early 90s in Berlin and the surrounding ex-GDR, several days without a need to fill the tank. The 500 SEL we also drove was empty very fast. And you did not have much Petrol stations in 1990 around Berlin but daily 200 up to 500 Kilometers! With 120/130 km/h it is so efficient, a Golf with 60 hp did use more on this speed 😂! Mercedes knew about the needs of their fleet customers ….
Schwachsinniger Motor, die Leistung zieht er aus der Drehzahl und dann säuft er wesentlich mehr als der 300er mit 3l. Es heißt der 260ér sei speziell als Dienstwagen für höhere Beamte, und Bosse im öffentlichen Dienst entwickelt worden. Der Regierungsdirektor, Sparkassendirektor, etc. durfte den 300er fahren und alle darunter mussten den Wagen eine Nummer kleiner haben, damit es noch zu einer S-Klasse reichte gab es den 260ér. Die 500ér gab es dann erst auf Ministerialebene. Ein höherer Beamter hat mir das einmal erklärt, selbst eine 300er E-Klasse galt in vielen Bereichen schon als Anmaßung, wenn nur ein 230ér für den Job vorgesehen war.

It is a S-Class so really that is not metter about the year. People needs to know that.

I have the performance upgraded 1988 420SE. It makes 240km/h on the clock. I guess these are 220-225 something in reality.

This is the base model. of course it's a bit underpowered, but 0-100 seems quite good. The 2,6 M103 fits best in the 190E.
