As a dressage rider I already know videos like this are as close as I am going to get to GP jumping. Even so. It really was a treat to hear how knowledgeable and appreciative the audience was. And how airy those single rails were! Those jumps must have taken a perfect approach to leave them in the cups
That man gives incredible full seat half-halts! That was an awesome ride! In a hackamore none the less! I am thoroughly impressed. Though some of these daft buffoons that are commenting have no place or business doing so, and know nothing on the subject. The horse is obviously well collected, his seat is nice and well ridden, and they jump beautifully.
hey, i'm from hamburg, where this derby takes place. they don't change the annually "Hamburger Derby" course, because the course is kind of a tradition. each year thousands of people come to watch riders riding this course.
what an amazing little horse, tries his heart right out for him! the rider is amazing too, you can really see their partnership through the way they listen to eachother :)
It's not a french link snaffle, child, look again: it's a jumping hackamore - works on leverage bringing pressure down on the horse's nose to encourage the horse to lower its head. There's no bit in his mouth at all. Haven't read the other comments to which you are referring, but this was very well ridden indeed!
This rider obviously knows his horse well, and if your really paying attention you can see that he never interferes with the horse's movement, he never hits back in the saddle, and look at his reins over the jumps, the horse is by no means being caught at the mouth or his jumping being hindered by it. This guy knows what he's doing.
lol this is awesome!! Bitless too!! What a talented horse :) and the victory 'arms in the air' at the end was great!! :D (lol almost ran into the other rider though XD)
@artex6 He isn't holding him back. He's getting him collected to make the taller jumps. If you let the horse have a really long stride before a tall jump, they'll probably refuse or at least knock a rail or two off, since the horse will jump wide and not up.
"Derby" courses in show jumping are kind of like a mini event course inside an arena. If you search for "LaBaule Derby" or "Hickstead Derby" or "Spruce Meadows Derby" you will see similar (if not more challenging) jumps. I love the Derbies - best test of scope, athleticism and training there is!
fantastic! The stirrups are so much longer and the position so much more upright than I'm used to seeing. Nothing wrong with that -- I'm looking to see what I might incorporate into my riding and this is intriguing.
I ride western so I don't know that much about jumping, however, this horse and rider are a great team. They fit. I would love to try it over (maybe) 2' jumps. Looks like fun!! By the way, this horse is not being abused or mistreated in any way. He is doing what he loves.
@artex6 "knock so many jumps down"? really? It was one jump. Could you do that course and not knock any of those jumps down? He was holding the reins tight to save up the horses energy to go over those jumps. I hate people who are jealous of other riders and take out their anger on them.
How about when everyone has been and done that particular course and not knocked one fence down.... then gone and learned about that particular horse and its needs...you can come back and critisise =) at the end of the day he may not ride like your style but he must be doing something right! and everyone rides differently, for all you know, that horse may need a firm hand... maybe if he drops the tight contact it gets insecure....maybe its tossing its head because its excited...you dont know!
OH okay!!! I'm new to the sport so I'm glad to read this because I sat here saying to myself as long as the horse or the rider didn't fall at 2:18, they're winners in my mind. That scared me so much I reacted loudly!! I know I can't be a spectator at one of these events! :)
The horse is in a bitless bridal so one can assume it has had mouth issues. The rider is brilliant accurate and assists the horse perfectly, the horse in return gives his absolute best, the results speak for themsleves.
@artex6 I'm guessing you don't watch much show jumping? They all pull on the reins to stop the horse from messing up the strides by going too fast and his spurs give an instant reaction which is what you need on a course like this besides I don't see him kicking when he comes up to a jump, he leaves that to the horse-which I might add was very excited hence why it bucked going over that jump which was what knocked it down, the only jump may I add.
I'm italian, i rode in 78_86, against raimondo d'inzeo -my teatcher- 25 years ago, in international show jumping (Roma 83,85,86. And not so many others). To be a man of horse so many things have to be cleared, with you and the horses, before to speack. It's easy to criticize, ride and canther on an oxer 150X190 first of a triple, and then came back here and tell me.
Holy shit that was a hard course! Hardly any oxers and the posts was freaking tall! Plus it looked like the water jump was a piece of cake for the horse. They did really well in this round.
My horse would love this. If they were smaller and we knew how xD He loves to jump-he was bred for it. He would so get a kick out of doing a course with smaller jumps like this~
Is he riding that in a hackamore!!! That's impressive. I couldn't do this course with a regular bridle, let alone a bitless one! Extremely well ridden!
I have a question for those people who know this course and this Derby way better than I do. I just watched a video that had this same exact course and was labeled as an '09 run, so would I be correct in assuming that this particular Derby is held annually over the same exact course? If this is correct, then why (with the exception of the bank drop) do they not change it up a little? I would think if riders run the same course year after year it'll seem rather monotonous. Just curious. :)
Everyone is commenting about his equitation and the bit and the spurs but are we not going to address that he almost caused a collision while yucking it up with the crowd 😂
Hello if any of you new about horses you would have noticed that he is riding in a Hackamore, a bitless bridle so the horse doesnt give two hoots about the rider pulling on his head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
natürlich sind reiter und pferd angespannt bei so einem Parcour! Außerdem bracht er eine gewisse Spannung auf den zügel um das pferd zu kontrollieren. wenn ihr den Parcour besser geritten seit, dann könnt ihr gerne meckern
If every equestrian was this sensible.... There would be so much more positive energy in this sport! We need this to combat the elitism. I thought the performance was fantastic regardless :) Lovely horse.
cross cantering into that first in-and-out! haha maybe a little bit of a stiff rider but who cares.. he handled that horse beautifully and what a talented horse that is!
I don’t see why so many people are being pissy in the comment if he didn’t hold his horse back then it would de gone to fast and been dangerous, it’s not uncommon for any rider to wear spurs and if the horse was really THAT uncomfortable it wouldn’t have gone round the course
I can't give a definitive answer, but it looks to me like the second horse was spooked by the incident. His rider reined him in to prevent him from bolting, so he was only able to react by shaking his head. I'm sure he was fine after he calmed down and realized no harm had come to him.
Oh I know all about shanked bits/hackamores and stuff. I ride both english and western, and in western riding a bit with a shank is required for horses over three (unless it's a hackamore).
Amazing! Well, this is called "Spring-derby",? But it's not a classical show jumping (different obstacles and so). Does this discipline has a different name? What is this? :D
meiner meinung nach ist das wegen dem hackamore... der reiter zieht ja richtig... das drückt dann ja richtig auf die nase... um dann dem auszuweichen schlägt das pferd mit dem kopf... aber hast recht :)
@artex6 Ok first of all, you must not be watching this horse because this is his headset. I believe "I've watched many horses jumping!" is the correct form. And if you think you're all that why don't you go ride this exact course and horse and then come back and say something. This horse could need this rein support so he has something to work against so he has more power. I think you need to learn how to ride.
@MileyJonas Im not jealous! I am very happy with my riding. I think of the horse. if you look close enough you would see that horse is very uncomfortable! and you don't hold the horse back when your at a jump you do that in between. Its obvious he needs work!

Brilliantly done by rider and horse, what a wonderful jump on his horse. An amazing round on a difficult course. Well done and thank you for sharing.
I love this horse! His legs spring off the ground so well that he doesn't even need to be scopey, he must be really athletic! :)
Wow that is so cool. The jumps are so high and the horse just flys over them. Wouldn't ya love a horse like that
hey, i'm from hamburg, where this derby takes place. they don't change the annually "Hamburger Derby" course, because the course is kind of a tradition. each year thousands of people come to watch riders riding this course.
love the horse and love the way this guy rides :)
he is such a great horse with a lovely character too :)
what an amazing little horse, tries his heart right out for him! the rider is amazing too, you can really see their partnership through the way they listen to eachother :)

That horse oh my gosh! It can jump I just ugh its amazing
Dude's leg hardly moves over these massive jumps!
Absolutely!!!!! he ride perfect on the wall....
lol this is awesome!! Bitless too!! What a talented horse :) and the victory 'arms in the air' at the end was great!! :D (lol almost ran into the other rider though XD)

Lisa Smit.... The horse is in no pain and the rider is amazing!!
I love how he's so excited at the end he almost crashes into that horse at 3:46 haha priceless!
That horse absolutely pings. Gorgeous horse beautiful ride. And in a hackamore! Wonderful.
Great horse !
What sort of bit is it ?
Gorgeous ride.
fantastic! The stirrups are so much longer and the position so much more upright than I'm used to seeing. Nothing wrong with that -- I'm looking to see what I might incorporate into my riding and this is intriguing.
The single dislike is from the man who he almost collided with into after his victory gallop.
I ride western so I don't know that much about jumping, however, this horse and rider are a great team. They fit. I would love to try it over (maybe) 2' jumps. Looks like fun!! By the way, this horse is not being abused or mistreated in any way. He is doing what he loves.
such a lovely horse and rider combination!!! :)
I'm standing beside him every day ;) he's lovely :)
Is this horse a stallion by any chance? If so, what is his breeding price? Thank you!
all i can say... he knows his horse and it pays off... amazing form
@artex6 riding is not just slowing down and speeding up...it is you that needs to learn how to ride
he was so happy that his horse was so good :) that course was his dream :)
@artex6 "knock so many jumps down"? really? It was one jump. Could you do that course and not knock any of those jumps down? He was holding the reins tight to save up the horses energy to go over those jumps. I hate people who are jealous of other riders and take out their anger on them.

wow. that steep drop would be difficult enough on it's own, let alone with a good sized jump just one stride after it. very impressive
OH okay!!! I'm new to the sport so I'm glad to read this because I sat here saying to myself as long as the horse or the rider didn't fall at 2:18, they're winners in my mind. That scared me so much I reacted loudly!! I know I can't be a spectator at one of these events! :)
Bloody amazing! the jumps are sooooo big!
The horse is in a bitless bridal so one can assume it has had mouth issues. The rider is brilliant accurate and assists the horse perfectly, the horse in return gives his absolute best, the results speak for themsleves.

That was a very good ride I have no idea what you are talking about.
Too busy show boating to notice another rider
Hello if any of you new about horses you would have noticed that he is riding in a Hackamore, a bitless bridle so the horse doesnt give two hoots about the rider pulling on his head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he's tall and it's short enough cause his position is really good! the horse has a gorgeous jump tbh
It seems the slope gets steeper every year.
natürlich sind reiter und pferd angespannt bei so einem Parcour! Außerdem bracht er eine gewisse Spannung auf den zügel um das pferd zu kontrollieren. wenn ihr den Parcour besser geritten seit, dann könnt ihr gerne meckern

Bravo ! bravo ! bravo !
cross cantering into that first in-and-out! haha maybe a little bit of a stiff rider but who cares.. he handled that horse beautifully and what a talented horse that is!
Wow its amazing how much Trust the Rider Put into the Horse amazing I thought 4" 3 was high ..................
Excelente recorrido

that's amazing!
3:47 does anyone know why the other horse shook its head like that after the almost-crash?
I can't give a definitive answer, but it looks to me like the second horse was spooked by the incident. His rider reined him in to prevent him from bolting, so he was only able to react by shaking his head. I'm sure he was fine after he calmed down and realized no harm had come to him.

muy bueno mis felicitaciones..
simply amazing.
warum ?
So no one is gonna comment on how dangerous the hill is?
holy shit that horse is good!!!!!
Breathtaking!
Wow! He's a brilliant rider! I soo wouldnt canter my horse down a drop that steep! And then he threw both hands into the air :P
the first horse looks like joie on war horses, i love jumping
sehr effektive gebiss-hackamore-kombination.
His horse is in a hackamore
I kind of died inside when he galloped right at that other horse
THAT IS INSANE!!!!!!!
Anyone know if the bit used is a shank or a hackamore?
Isla Campbell It's a mechanical hackamore.
Nice ride.
That is NOT a french link snaffle lol. Look at the shanks.
Phenomenal horse!!...flying high again!
meiner meinung nach ist das wegen dem hackamore...
der reiter zieht ja richtig... das drückt dann ja richtig auf die nase... um dann dem auszuweichen schlägt das pferd mit dem kopf... aber hast recht :)
hackamores are evens tronger though sometimes then a bit, and seeing by the shanks coming off of this hackamore its quite strong lol
I love riders in military uniform
@artex6 Ok first of all, you must not be watching this horse because this is his headset. I believe "I've watched many horses jumping!" is the correct form. And where does he reward the horse??
After he finishes jumping the course. Then he'll take the horse out for pizza and beer.
No time for that...he's too busy show boating.
a french horse , no ?
he's riding him with an hackamore and a regular bit, he combined it :)
@suesnyder411 yeah, but in these derbies it's not unusual for the winner to have one or more fences down.. they're SO hard
haha dieses Pferd wird wegen diesen Fehlern nicht geschlagen ... Er liebt seine Pferde überalles !
He's not even using a bitted bridle!
he tought he's going to die so he gave everything normally he's not riding like this ;)
@MileyJonas Im not jealous! I am very happy with my riding. I think of the horse. if you look close enough you would see that horse is very uncomfortable! and you don't hold the horse back when your at a jump you do that in between. Its obvious he needs work!
Sierra Dewald he’s clearly not harming the horse!! He’s using a hackamore, you are the one who needs to look closer, have a nice day though
When you're in the jumping and riding stirrup
you could see its mucles too! Realy amazing horse
Horse and rider WOW!!!!
haha nice victory gallop at the end
Das müsste Verboten werden. Das arme Pferd! Die Gebisse sind der Horror! !!
that was very well ridden!
Awesome ride!
Genio
@olivia4nier he was 3rd place.
Luxembourg 🇱🇺
orgueil is much better with an hackmore :)
TIP!!! hij moet die teugels niet zo strak geef hem de ruimtee!!
