Go-Go's - We Got The Beat (1980 original single version)
Written by Charlotte Caffey.
Produced by Paul L. Wexler and engineered by Jerry Napier at Amiga and GoldStar Studios, Los Angeles. Originally recorded for the Go-Go's 1980 5-song demo tape, but subsequently issued as a single by Stiff Records while the group was supporting The Specials on a tour of England.
This sped-up, punkier version of the song is much more true to the band's original Buzzcocks inspired sound, than the slowed sown and slicked up version they would do for their debut albm "Beauty And The Beat" in 1981 with veteran girl-group producer Richard Gottehrer. What many people don't remember is that this version of the song is what started the Go-Go's phenomenon by crossing the Atlantic to America and becoming a huge underground dance hit. On the basis of import sales alone, this single charted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Dance Chart - an impressive feat for a then unsigned band.
I have this single. I called record stores all over SoCal looking for it after seeing the GoGos play at the Roxy. I finally found it in a store in Long Beach--about an hour's drive (in rush hour traffic anyway) from where I lived. I nearly wore it out that first night (and drove a couple of friends nuts). From the moment I saw them at the Roxy (before their IRS contract) I knew they would be huge. Thanks for putting this up. (Note the original line-up)
Minus Elissa Bello
With The exception of Elissa
I bought mine at Zed Records when they were in the corner of a small strip mall on 7th Street. They stocked all punk and new wave imports. Nothing mass-appeal. Good times!
Yeah, miss the days of actually hunting and finding the true treasures out there in music. I still play my "Diehard Romantic" by Exploding Parakeet 7". Great times.
Technically the ORIGINAL lineup was Jane, Belinda, Charlotte, Margot, and Elissa Bello.
I grew up with the album version and this is so much better!. Wish I could go back in time to 1979 or 1980 and see them live in LA !
yeah it IS very garage sounding... which makes it MUCH better in my book...
they were a punk back b4 all the bubblegum
I love punk rock and I am a huge fan of The GOGOs
Very cool, sounds more pure and not over produced. even though I like both versions.
This sounds like The Sex Pistols with Belinda singing. This is freakin' great!
WAY BETTER than the Album Version. POWERFUL!
This is the original that features the original bassist Margot Olaverra. Very historic!!!
I love me some Kathy Valentine, but you can her how much more punk and tight Margot is. The Bass really drives this song. Margot did a great job on this. Gina is fantastic as alway.
Agreed. I love Kathy too but Margot + Gina they had a really solid rhythm section….the energy they bring gives me goosebumps.
Much better than the standard version. ✔
this and the live version in urgh a music war blow away the hit single version.
Interesting version to a classic. Don't believe I ever heard this one before. Nice. Thanks for uploading this rare gem.
+defiantone this is the original version; go go's were originally a punk band back in the day.
robin212212 Thanks for the info. Appreciate it much.
On this day in 1982 {January 23rd} the Go-Go's performed "We Got The Beat" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'
One week later on January 30th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100
It reached #3 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart and #29 on the Australian ARIA Singles chart
The three weeks it was at #2; the #1 record was "I Love Rock and Roll" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}
urgh a music war..........love the gogos.
I have this single. We used to dance our asses off to this! Kicks the LP version to the curb and stomps on it!
any version the gogos sing of this song totally rules!!
Hey! This is far better than the LP version!!
More of a punk edge with this version. Love it!!
I have this 45, bought as an import so many years ago. Thanks for the share.
wish i still had mine! = (
Yeah still have mine.
I still have mine too! B-side is How Much More.
pure magic
BOTH versions are awesome. Actually I think on the better known single the bass sounds clearer. In any case the tune in itself is a win.
I loved their original sound when they were a Punk band!
Such a great band!!
There's a much cleaner sounding CD version of this as one of the B-sides on "The Whole World Lost It's Head" from 1994.
Nice version never heard it before this was before the Go-Gos were famous
Sick! Love the garage factor. Belinda used to hang out with the Germs.
Yeah because she was the first drummer for The Germs
Trousers?
@@alecbilicki8520 indeed her best friend in high school was Terri Ryan who became Lorna Doom RIP in the Germs
The Go Go’s are punks.
I remember hearing this version on 92.7 WLIR Long Island dare to be different
WLIR and WNEW FM, The good old days!
Damn…I love this sludgier version
This was their first single (b/w "How Much More"), released on UK's Stiff Records. "If it ain't Stiff, it ain't worth a fcuk" was their classic t-shirt slogan! Because of early KNAC/Long Beach and KROQ airplay in 1980 they got noticed and signed by I.R.S. Records...and the rest is herstory.
Excellent Garage Power Pop gem.
I have this 45; bought it right after I heard it a dance club in 1980.
Vintage Gold
Wow! Much more punkier than the 1981 version!
I like version better its more punk sounding
they started out as a punk band
Amen to that
mononucleosis
Margo is out here in LA... flying low and avoiding the radar
this version is way better than the one that was released on their Beauty and the Beat album!
I totally agree the Go Gos went to a main stream sound! The rest was history!
And there are other versions as well. On the original (first) vinyl pressing of the IRS album "Beauty and the Beat" this track had NO PIANO, which they added to the single version mix, and which appears on all subsequent pressings of the album "Beauty and the Beat." If you have a real first pressing of the IRS album, you'll notice the lack of piano, and a short 2-measure bass riff that precedes the chorus (about 45 seconds in). But I enjoy ALL these versions. Cool stuff, and takes me down memory lane...
But....lacking the drum intro? You gotta have the drum intro with this song.
Wow. I'm a huge huge fan and I've never heard this.
This is like when you're wife comes home with a totally different look like radically different hair/glasses or something. You know deep down it's still the same great woman but it's like you're seeing her in a whole new way. Can't believe I never heard this cut, it kicks ass!
Dottie Danger
Got this on the original Stiff 45.
I had this record, it was the first single that came out before the mainstream version. It was way better than the mass version.
this shit is AWESOME. TU 4 POSTING!
What I wouldn't give to have this vinyl!
look up the go go's discogs on google, scroll down to their singles and there it is
I am on Discogs....duh! I am going to buy one this weekend. Cheers!
oh k i didnt know good for you cheers
Copy in the mail on it's way to me! :)
Oh hell yeah !!!
Better than the polished version. Love it.
yeah we got the beat
Thanks for post. I had heard there was a different version years ago, but didn't ever expect to hear it. Did The Go-Go's release an EP with Stiff Records or was it just various singles?
I'm a bit late to the game, but it was just this single with Stiff
Ps thanks for upload
Still have my 45. B-side is How much More. Both sound so much better than the Beauty and the Beast versions!
Thanks for posting this.....
Can't wait to hear it debby cover version would be awesome she singing on new style 2012 I luv this song :o
I LOVE YOU BELINDA
Nice. Never knew they recorded this on the Stiff label!
I luv it!!
This is the loudest song in my playlist
Uuuuuuhhhhh ( this is at the Same Speed or maybe even slower than the later version )..
I wish they had kept this sound over the pop thing they went with soon after.
My Sharona
Back when they were punk
i love Belinda!!!
Is Margot on bass?
Epitaph1334 Yes
What ever became if Margot? She's like the Beatles Pete Best, cut at the last minute
and missed out on fame. Wonder what here take and the change to Valentine was?
Check out the band documentary on Amazon. Very interesting!
??
Can the internet make me a power puff girls video of this song
that was the first time Kathy played live with them... Margo came down with mono and couldn't get out of bed... and the rest is Herstory ;)
'Odessey'
Liked the video to put it above 666 likes
The demo version (1980)kills the rest. .....
This does kill the rest. It's not a "demo" per se, but an actual UK single released a year before they got signed by Miles Copeland's I.R.S. Records.
Radio rebel copied it :|
I get the feeling that some people would like this even if it was nothing but white noise. "I don't go for that pop crap. I love nothing but white noise. I make the music with my mind because I'm an advanced hipster. The unwashed masses make me sick. I'm so much better than they are. I'm so far above the rabble that I might as well be God."
Replayability it makes you one of them making this statement
actually she's in NYC
lol
why do you think I said who cares.? LOL
who cares
pretty good for a bunch of broads
Pretty good for *anybody*
