- One of the best examples of the "Verismo" genre in opera (verismo meaning realism) in which the characters live and breathe with raw emotion and passion.
Puccini was one of its foremost exponents; and his opera "The Girl of the Golden West" is an actual "horse-opera" based on David Belasco's play, set during the California Gold Rush. Here is the hair-raising confrontation between the title-character and the Sheriff, over the life of the bandit whom she loves. Superbly sung and enacted by Barbara Daniels and Sherrill Milnes.
The entire performance is available on DVD from Deutsche Grammophon and also for streaming from Met Opera on Demand.

It's sinful that the MET did nothing with the great success of Miss Daniels whom I got to know personally quite well.
Her MET career was essentially over after FANCIULLA after which she went to Europe. I have no idea what the
problem was but MISS DANIELS should have become a superstar but the MET just let disappear from the MET ROSTER,
one of the most abysmal things ever in MET history. It's still something over which I have never forgiven the MET. WHY DID
THIS HAPPEN is the million dollar question? Barbara Daniels career was essentially over at such a young age.!

Who is the conductor?
It's Leonard Slatkin a few years before the Met fired him after his disastrous unprepared performances of La Traviata.
