I was 19 when I saw Corelli in Fanciulla and got his autograph. He saw my girlfriend's teary face and reached out and touched her wet cheek so awed by her tears. Then he said "Will you come to Chenier?" Chenier is my favorite so 2 weeks later we saw Chenier.

I’ve heard them called “the saddest two words in the Italian language.” Maybe in all languages. That finale, with Minnie and the miners, the mix of sorrow, longing, hope - I always burst into tears. Never fails! 😢

Frazzoni along with the cast and Orchestra gave one hell of a great performance. I do believe leaving out Destinn, Frazzoni must have been the ideal Minnie, looking the part and singing the part with such beauty of tone, she and Corelli were well matched, Gobbi was at his best here also, it is a Verismo part and Gobbi was a great singing actor, Corelli I heard many times but never in this role, I did here his main rival Del Monaco in the role, both are perfect for the role in my mind, my father interviewed Martinelli in the sixties in London for a Opera Magazine and talked about the Tenors who were doing the role at that time, he said Corelli and Del Monaco were superb, they would be superb at anytime in the Century, great voices. I only wish he said that I had been able to record some pieces from the Opera, but like Caruso it was not possible, that was the only drawback of being a Victor recording artist in those years, this was also a problem for other parts also. Riccardo Martin he said recorded it for Edison . It was a mistake on his part. Corelli was a very nervous man at times, this could be a problem for him in his earlier years, but he was a very great Tenor and I talked to him about Fanciulla and other roles, intelligent and a very respectful, honest and decent man. Del Monaco was very similar, with the greatest respect to both these Great Tenors, they deserve every accolade wished upon them. I would say the same as well, lately I have listened to some terrible Italian Tenors in the role( No Names) !, Kaufmann, glotal, awful voice, Domingo was not bad, but he was not in the same class as his Contemparies, Cecchele was much better and so was Bonisolli , but these wonderful performances of Corelli show that he was in my mind in the Top 10 of Tenors of the Century. Brilliant Tenor.

Per questo lo ringraziamo di cuore, e naturalmente anche i nostri interpreti preferiti e questa fantastica opportunità offerta da UA-cam. Un'ultima nota sulle sedi dell'opera a Budapest e a Vienna quella sera. A Budapest, la Turandot è stata rappresentata il 29 novembre 2024. L'Opera di Stato di Budapest ha anche preparato una serie di tre parti, ciascuna di un'ora, molto elaborate e informative su Turandot su UA-cam. Purtroppo, l'Opera di Stato di Vienna non ha eseguito alcuna opera di Puccini quella sera.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Et quel hommage aussi en ce centenaire de la mort de Puccini dont la persuasion séduisit l'auteur Belasco qui accepta à nouveau (après sa Mme Butterfly) de lui laisser composer cet opéra ( premier "western spaghetti", opéra avec le "happy end") interprété ici par le "Hollywoodien" Franco Corelli 😃😃😃.
Though not nearly as popular as his La Boheme or Tosca I’m inclined to think that this opera is Puccini at his most inspired despite a somewhat weak story/libretto (not however unusual in opera)

The only thing I don't understand is why at the beginning of the video, under "CHARACTERS & PERFORMERS" you wrote that the role of Nick is Piero De Palma. And in the video description - Franco Ricciardi (which is correct, as far as I remember). You got it mixed up, I guess...
yeah, it's just an error on my part 😫 it's Franco Ricciardi singing here, as correctly stated in the description. I somehow managed to confuse myself, because De Palma was Nick in the 1964 production... (Actually, technically he's in the video too because he's in some of the pictures, where I could not find suitable ones with Riccardi and Nick's face was not very visible, like in Act 2, and there is also one scene in Act 1 where Ricciardi's head is photoshopped on De Palma's body 😅)

I think this opera deserved and long awaited its visual realization. Although we have the movie with Frazzoni (1955) and the video from Tokyo with Limarilli (1963). But the 1956 cast from La Scala is stronger, of course. P.S. Gobbi at 1:35:53 is incredibly expressive! As he always is, actually. He was a great actor. And Corelli, of course, is inimitable. He pulls the maximum of meaning and expression out of this part. The best Johnson!

She gave me a stern look and asked me if I knew Lloyd Webber. " I said no madame." And she told me she was suing him. And you can guess why.

As I said in the video description, all photos are the work of La Scala's in-house photographer, Erio Piccagliani, but apart from the 1956 production, to which the audio recording belongs, I used photos from 1957 (when Frazzoni and Gobbi was joined by Mario Del Monaco as Johnson, and there were some changes to the supporting cast as well) and 1964 (when Corelli was Frazzoni's partner again, but Rance was played by Gian Giacomo Guelfi and the supporting cast was almost completely different). There were simply not enough photos from the 1956 performance only to illustrate the complete recording.
L'ho conosciuto e nonostante la grande differenza di eta eravamo diventati amici ,cantai al funerale del fratello Ubaldo ,mio insegnante ,alla fine della cerimonia mi disse " Hai cantato bene " Ce l'ho nel cuore"Grazie Franco di farci ancora emozionare ogni volta che ti sentiamo cantare. Il fratello mi regaló una registrazione fatta a casa sua di Franco in un brano della Gioconda quando ancora non era Franco. Una reliquia.
Quanti ricordi fantastici deve avere! Saremmo lieti se potesse parlarci della sua conoscenza con i fratelli Corelli, e potrebbe anche condividere con noi la registrazione? Sarebbe una grande gioia ascoltare Corelli prima della sua carriera, e naturalmente sarebbe anche molto istruttivo per molti tenori vedere da dove è partito nel suo cammino verso la perfezione assoluta, che ha raggiunto attraverso il duro lavoro e lo studio instancabile.

Un'ultima nota sulle sedi dell'opera a Budapest e a Vienna quella sera. A Budapest, la Turandot è stata rappresentata il 29 novembre 2024. L'Opera di Stato di Budapest ha anche preparato una serie di tre parti, ciascuna di un'ora, molto elaborate e informative su Turandot su UA-cam. Purtroppo, l'Opera di Stato di Vienna non ha eseguito alcuna opera di Puccini quella sera.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Et quel hommage aussi en ce centenaire de la mort de Puccini dont la persuasion séduisit l'auteur Belasco qui accepta à nouveau (après sa Mme Butterfly) de lui laisser composer cet opéra ( premier "western spaghetti", opéra avec le "happy end") interprété ici par le "Hollywoodien" Franco Corelli 😃😃😃.

Though not nearly as popular as his La Boheme or Tosca I’m inclined to think that this opera is Puccini at his most inspired despite a somewhat weak story/libretto (not however unusual in opera)

The only thing I don't understand is why at the beginning of the video, under "CHARACTERS & PERFORMERS" you wrote that the role of Nick is Piero De Palma. And in the video description - Franco Ricciardi (which is correct, as far as I remember). You got it mixed up, I guess...
yeah, it's just an error on my part 😫 it's Franco Ricciardi singing here, as correctly stated in the description. I somehow managed to confuse myself, because De Palma was Nick in the 1964 production... (Actually, technically he's in the video too because he's in some of the pictures, where I could not find suitable ones with Riccardi and Nick's face was not very visible, like in Act 2, and there is also one scene in Act 1 where Ricciardi's head is photoshopped on De Palma's body 😅)

I think this opera deserved and long awaited its visual realization. Although we have the movie with Frazzoni (1955) and the video from Tokyo with Limarilli (1963). But the 1956 cast from La Scala is stronger, of course.
P.S. Gobbi at 1:35:53 is incredibly expressive! As he always is, actually. He was a great actor. And Corelli, of course, is inimitable. He pulls the maximum of meaning and expression out of this part. The best Johnson!

As I said in the video description, all photos are the work of La Scala's in-house photographer, Erio Piccagliani, but apart from the 1956 production, to which the audio recording belongs, I used photos from 1957 (when Frazzoni and Gobbi was joined by Mario Del Monaco as Johnson, and there were some changes to the supporting cast as well) and 1964 (when Corelli was Frazzoni's partner again, but Rance was played by Gian Giacomo Guelfi and the supporting cast was almost completely different). There were simply not enough photos from the 1956 performance only to illustrate the complete recording.

L'ho conosciuto e nonostante la grande differenza di eta eravamo diventati amici ,cantai al funerale del fratello Ubaldo ,mio insegnante ,alla fine della cerimonia mi disse " Hai cantato bene " Ce l'ho nel cuore"Grazie Franco di farci ancora emozionare ogni volta che ti sentiamo cantare. Il fratello mi regaló una registrazione fatta a casa sua di Franco in un brano della Gioconda quando ancora non era Franco. Una reliquia.
Quanti ricordi fantastici deve avere! Saremmo lieti se potesse parlarci della sua conoscenza con i fratelli Corelli, e potrebbe anche condividere con noi la registrazione? Sarebbe una grande gioia ascoltare Corelli prima della sua carriera, e naturalmente sarebbe anche molto istruttivo per molti tenori vedere da dove è partito nel suo cammino verso la perfezione assoluta, che ha raggiunto attraverso il duro lavoro e lo studio instancabile.
