This is a weird one, i feel like thinking about it made me realize that often when i hear story i think about the open world rather than the personal story instances.
I'm a huge HoT enjoyer but the actual story instances are extremely meh and i remember being extremely disappointed by the last third and all the potential it had. But what stuck in my mind is the map exploration and how well the maps and the metas integrated with and told the story. It really felt like i was a part of it, getting lost in hostile territory and learning to make do and get better at it.
Unfortunately, that experience is not repeatable and the mobs lost a lot of their bite with current balance so i think b tier (or even high c) fits it comfortably.
Season one was great, i loved it at the time. The LA destruction was one of my most intense and coolest moments in Gaming ever. Back in the day i was hanging out with RPers in my guild and some of them were playing LA based characters, which made it even more intense. I have yet to replay it after it's reimplementation though.
EoD is okay for me but definitely not S tier. Maybe A or B.
I enjoyed the first map a lot, it really gave me that buzzing exciting feel of going somewhere new and exotic. The story was meandering and slow enough to really let us soak in the sights and impressions.
Kaineng left me feeling a bit underwhelmed, i had hoped for more but overall it's a pretty cool map. I also enjoyed the fact that the story made a loop trough echovald and then brought you back there. Echovald itself is such an amazing and beautiful map, especially in the canopy so it's a shame the story didn't really bring you up there much. Praised be jade runestone chest farming which let me appreciate it more. :D
Icebrood Saga is a sad one. I'm an absolute fan of that expansion but feel like it got ruined. The prologue was alright, a beautiful map and slowly leading you into the story while wrapping up the Kralk arc. The creepy atmosphere of the two drakkar lake episodes was amazing, proper chills down the spine. Coming after the greatness of season 4, this got me so hyped and continued the tone i loved there.
I enjoyed the drizzlewood coasts updates as well. The maps were amazing, the story was alright but i think suffered a lot from the missing voice acting at first. After that it went downhill. I did enjoy the idea and concept of the DRMs and the character exposure and lore we got in them but that slowly decreased and it was such too repetitive with too little content. You could tell it was a mess on the devs side and that dragged it down.
Overall i'd put it in C tier. It's bad parts were way worse than SotO, true, but i feel like it's good parts were better too .

The only ones I haven't played so far are IBS and EoD. I mostly agree with you, except i would have put season 3 higher and PoF lower. I just enjoy challenging maps :-)

I agree the later half of the personal story with everything around Orr was really bad - all of Orr is horribly designed with cc-spamming mobs and waypoints that don't work half the time. Then there's that god-awful Zhaitan fight which is still bad even after they changed it from being a 5-man mission to making it soloable. And throughout the entire second half of the story, our character is just a 5th wheel for the Destiny's Edge NPCs and the credit-stealing Trahearne. There aren't even any good villians either, Zhaitan is just some nebulous thing.
The depressing this is that I think the first half of the personal story was actually pretty good up until Claw Island. The starter zones are great and the story had NPCs that left a lasting memory like Tybalt. But something happened after Claw Island where the game seemed more interested in telling Trahearne's story (I wonder if he was someone's TTRPG character or something) instead of making our character the hero of the story and even worse, the devs decided to focus on making the gameplay more 'challenging' (i.e. a tedious timesink).
I also agree the Living World Story 4 was absolutely brilliant, one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had - in an MMO or otherwise. Seeing the creation of the zone of Dragongfall was absolutely EPIC. And you didn't mention our dearest dragon daughter Aurene lol

I actually prefer not being the hero. Not a big fan of being a prophesied chosen one as the story progressed. Though I understand why people prefer that since it's a staple in MMOs.

Cool video. Personally i would put LW s3 in A and Personal story in C. Probably nostalgia but i just can`t bring my self to hate it.

Soto I'd put D tier and HoT A tier. personal story as a whole I'd say is D tier but first half poo poo doo doo and second half C tier.

People criticizing personal story: Zhaitan is a bland villain with no personality, why did they focus so much on him?
Same people criticizing IBS: Why didn't they focus more on Primordus, the bland villain with no personality?

SotO really feels out of place for GW 2.
A story about being the new guy at work for the character that's saved the world like 5 times? Not a winner on concept alone. It also undercuts Zojja as a character by removing some of her personality, and then literally removing her personality.

Joko had some fun moments and Canuck is amusing but generally I'd rather eat my eyes than drag alts through gw2 story missions more than once

@@DhiscoStu you know what? i retract. there was one genuinely well-written arc, surprisingly well written. wings 1-4. i would consider it B tier (very high for gw2 standards) writing. but scrubs complained that they cant access it, and we got IBS, EoD, and SotO. and in w6-w7 they gave all characters power of sass (yes, i want all my characters to be like taimi!), and villain is comically evil.

@@velDANTe Just coming in to say Wings 1-4l, but specifically Wing 4, is some of my favorite written content in any game ever.
