  • In this long-format video I demonstrate my process for advanced drum sampling in Logic Pro X Sampler (version 10.5). For this video I'm specifically building a hyper-realistic acoustic drum kit.

    Thank You! I am dying to find a tutorial, any tutorial, on the most practical and efficient ways to do vocal chop sampling using Sampler. This includes how to get the glide settings right and some useful modulation techniques. Also, just the most practice ways to map out the samples. I typically will throw a whole verse into the mapping editor and find parts that work, and throw the same verse into the editor again and pick a different area, and continue doing that until I've got like 6 areas of the same sample to play around with. It's slow and tedious, though, and I can achieve this a lot more easily using Serato Sample. Only problem is Serato doesn't have a glide function, in addition to the ability to mess with the samples, etc. Anyway, if you have some free time I would kill to see you work through that process!

    Excellent Josh.
    Even though a total newbie to sampling - thus never got my feet wet in the nether regions of EXS24 - this seems to be invaluable. A host of great info - ! I'll certainly be referring back to this over and over as I come to grips with the world of sampling.
    So exciting! Thank you!

    I know this video is a few years old now, so this may have been addressed already, but if you create your groups first, and then go group by group dragging the samples for that group in all at once from the finder, hovering over the key in the mapper, it'll automatically disperse those samples by velocity on that key. Makes the process slightly less tedious for me, especially if you're working with a bunch of velocity divisions, if that makes sense at all.

    Very helpful. I’ve been doing the same with my kit. It’s interesting to me that in setting up your kit you’ve focused more on round robins than on velocity layers. I know you can do both, but I always spend more of my energy on velocity and only use round robin on the snare. Anyway, thanks.

    Great tutorial and walkthrough! Thanks! .... I used this video to try out my own samples that I'd like to play and from my electric kit but I was running into a problem with the high hat. The midi map for the v-drum's high hat corresponds to the open high hat note regardless of whether it's closed or open. Is there a way to tell sampler when the hi hat controller is pressed, so it changes the midi note to the closed high hat? Because regardless of the hi hat being closed or open, the midi note/map doesn't change so it doesn't work smoothly with an electric kit. .... Drum Set Designer has a way to get around this by changing a setting from GM to V-Drum in a bottom dropdown menu, but I was hoping there was a similar or equivalent feature in Sampler. Do you happen to know? Thanks again for all the tutorials you've done over the years. I've learned a lot!

    Thank you. I'm a bit confused by how you know to put the snare flam on D#1 based on the GM drum map. The one I found has hand claps on D#1 and no flam on the list. Where do you find alternative GM drum maps or do you just copy other drum instruments in Logic if you have something outside of the usual list?

    Super informative video. Love it! So a hyper realistic Hihat takes a lot of samples and groups. Or maybe you know a company/someone who has that? No one of the big brands, Toontrack, AD-Drums and so on! :) I have these :)
    I don't know why but when you play shaft Hihats, no one really have great feeling, and not sounding dynamic. Anyway, Great Tut!!!

    Do you know if you're able to assign multiple samples to one note on the piano roll? I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to load in for instance with a snare drum, A snare top, snare bottom, snare room, and overheads.. But i'd also like to be able to mix those seperate mics in multi output mode. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

    Hey Music Tech Help Guy, how do I import a bunch of drum samples/folders into the sampler? Do I go to plug-in settings and just copy and paste them in there? Because I managed to do that but when I go to select them say I bounce down a file and do track replacement to layer samples, I can’t select the samples, they’re greyed.
    Mind you they are WAV. Files so what’s the right step?

    Just set up a Real drumset in Sampler. I’m running into a weird issue with round robin. All of my drums are doing round robin as they should, except two. When I set those groups to use round robin, I get no sound from them at all, but turning RR off, sound comes back. Other than the trigger key and multi-out channel, the settings on that group are setup the same as every other drum. Have I run into a capacity limitation?

    Excellent reference video but what a pain-in-the-arse! I did this back in ESX24 Logic 9 for a custom Gretch kit and used it for a few years. Today, I’m looking for layered multi-sampled drum kits and it seems like nobody cares. It can be done in Logic, but it’s not elegant or easy, whereas Battery 4 seems to offer a better UI and editor and allows velocity range overlap. I suspect folks just buy EZ Drummer, Addictive or GGD where all the mapping is already done for you.

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  Рік тому +1

      Def a pain in the ass to do this way. If you're looking for a quicker custom drum kit workflow, Battery is definitely the way to go! You can also do things like create flams and rolls in Battery, which you can't do with Sampler.

    I love this channel, but found this video to be a bit confusing. For instance, the first thing he breaks down is the limitations and work arounds for layering samples - before even touching on the fundamentals of velocity assignment, round robins etc. I’m finding it a bit hard to follow but perhaps I need to look elsewhere and come back when I need to understand how to stack multiple samples.

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  Рік тому +1

      This is probably one of the more advanced tutorials I've done. If you're not already familiar with working with samplers and the fundamentals of MIDI, it might be a little confusing. I'm pretty I even say that somewhere in the video.

    I’ve followed directions carefully. I cannot hear my Hi Hats. Why would that be???

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  3 роки тому +1

      A couple things to double check:
      1. Make sure that the output of the hi hats are correct, could be going to a multi-output channel that doesn't exist.
      2. Make sure the key range is on the right octave/note.
      3. I've often accidentally got my round robin cycles mixed up, so double check those and make sure they are sequential.
      4. Hit the key for the hi hat really hard and then really soft and see if it shows up for just certain velocities. You might have accidentally set the velocity range to exclude certain velocities.
      Good luck!
