  • Dungeness crabs are plentiful early in the season this year. We went out for a couple of hours in our "Tillamook" dory with only two pots and came in with our biggest haul this season.
Learn more about crabbing from PK. He as some fascinating underwater videos of crabs and crab pots.

I've always cooked crab in sea water from the cooler I take them home in live. Others cook them in tap water. We brought home eight Dungeness from Tillamook Bay this afternoon and I decided to try fresh water. Never again!
The contrast in taste is significant. These, boiled twenty minutes in fresh water, were bland and almost tasteless in comparison to crabs boiled in salt water.
How do you boil crabs, fresh water or salt? If you've done it both ways, which do you prefer?

Cook in sea water and whole crab to keep its flavor and sweetness.

I add salt if I can't get ocean water. I also don't keep my keepers in water. I keep them in a bucket or cooler with a wet gunny sack over them. Underwater they'll breathe up all the oxygen in the water and die. If they stay damp, they can breathe outside water. I just dunk the sack in the ocean, and redunk every time it starts to dry out at all.

A square blade shovel stuck upside down in ground or a small meat cleaver does the trick as well! they tast better without guts in cookpot. Crab taste better than lobster!!! Enjoying your video again from westcoast Canada.

Yep, lobster is over-rated. But, to me, crabs taste better boiled whole.

That dory turned out great! I really like your interior layout. Side benches keep the open utility boat convenience, but the missus has a nice place to sit.

I wanted to keep the center open, but side bench seats make pulling crab pots more difficult than if they weren't there. But I'm not complaining.

2 years ago but not a lot in crabbing changes. I'm in Calif. and 75. No boat of my own but at least this year my friends boat is running again. MY main crabbing is with crab snares. I really enjoy snaring and would advise you to do it between pulls. It's relaxing and gives you a chance at more crabs. I make all my own snares so it is something else to do in the spring when it cools down. I really like that boat!! I'm not sure who, maybe Thuy at fishing 24-7 shows how to make a pot piller from a cheap 12 volt Harbor Freight winch.

I'm not so far gone that I can't pull pots by hand. Good exercise.
My wife likes to use a folding crab trap between pulls. I'm usually content to sit and watch the world around me or read.
Dory and trailer are undergoing maintenance right now. Hope to be back on the water in a few days.

Hands down for sure best way is to boil or steam them in seawater whole. Cleaning them before cooking removes the butter and a lot of flavor. The saltwater just gives them a fresh taste of ocean. Only spice needed is the ocean. Dip in garlic butter if you want but it is not really needed.

Thank you for sharing this video. I haven't fished yet for anything from the ocean since moving to Oregon last summer. I turn 50 in a few months and I would like to try some new things in my life. I am intrigued about perhaps looking to own a boat and trying this someday. Any tips on what to look for when looking for a simple boat? If I buy a used one, what should I be looking out for?
In a few weeks, I'm going to start out slow and start with clamming maybe along Netarts Bay when the tides are at their lowest. Perhaps my interest will peak into other related activities such as crabbing and also fishing but as my life is now heading towards past the half-century mark, I think these are things that I could learn to enjoy as I get older and closer to my retirement years.

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer  Рік тому

Where did you move here from?
For a recreational crabbing boat, roominess and stability are critical. Crab pots take up a lot of space. You'll be hauling them in over the side, so you definitely do not want something tippy. A young man drowned just last week in Nestucca Bay when he and two others capsized a small boat while crabbing.
Spend the money for an automatic, inflatable life vest and wear it. If you rely on the standard, bulky style, you won't wear it all the time.
