To be fair, fostering 30 children isn’t out of the question. Some children are only fostered for a few days to a week. If a foster parent is willing to take on emergency placements (which this character does as they are taking in a baby on Christmas Eve) then I think 30 children is reasonable

As for whatever show Ruby Sunday was on, I genuinely have no idea it was supposed to be a reference to a real world thing. This video is the first time I'm being told it was apparently based on something that exists, so I wouldn't say that it really made me feel alienated. I just thought it wasn't original idea, and I guess if you live in the UK, there's a chance you might get what it's referencing, which is a nice bonus
30 fosters isn't a huge number.. There are some 'Short term" foster parents who take a kid in for a few weeks so, if you're one of those, you can easily have multiple. Several of my foster parents had seen that many..
Funny Disney felt like the Doc needed clarified on who he is but the Davina stuff was kept. I was very very lost with that part of the show (non-UK viewer)
As a UK viewer who has never heard of her or her show, I just thought it was made up for Doctor Who, so just went with it. I suppose the name dropping when he said merry Christmas to her was probably weird for you, but my mum had already explained to me who she was, so it wasn't as jarring to me.
Maybe this is just me, but I think the tears when Ruby is gone are more for him than Ruby. I think he's imagining what his life would be like if it become like Carla's in the new timeline, with all the companions he once had gone.
Thank christ for this video. I genuinely have no memory of the rest of the episode after I saw a baby on a conveyor belt and the Return of the Jedi music number. I was too busy trying to borrow a CPAP from the old lady next door before i suffocated from laughing too much.
Just to confirm, the snowman scene was 100% added after screenings, I believe it was filmed in October last year? Almost a year after the episode itself was filmed!
I think the controversy stems from who made the decision, as it has been militantly defended by Whovians that Disney has zero impact on the show and only has the rights to air it.
I thought this episode was very weak, i found the doctor a little cringe and unfunny in the lines which was a shame as i think gatwa has the ability to be good. I actually really liked gibson as Ruby, she was a fun watch on screen despite how wierd it feels theres a companion younger than me now, i just found the story uninteresting at best and downright bad at worst. I want the doctor to actually get a little depth i felt like there was nothing to him which normally i somewhat accept in first stories due to the post regeneration haze, but that wasn't a factor here. The 9th doctor was established beautifully in rose as a hero but one who had a dark streak and utterly alien, 10th doctor had his lighter, cockier flirty persona established in Christmas invasion, 11 felt pretty solid in the last 30 seconds of end of time, let alone the 11th hour (imo the standard that should be aimed for). I feel like this doctor just has nothing to him, hes kinda flirty and cheeky ig, but thats a lot like the 10th doctor without the dark side that made him flawed.
Without the gloves, The Doctor would not have been able to pull the ship down on the spire of the church! Just wish it had been little aliens in their space ship with Jabba the Hut.
As an American I assumed they just made up the finding lost parents show for the episode lol. And I’m holding out hope they eventually pull that instrumentless musical number gag (since there’ll be many more opportunities).
This episode lacked character. Despite all the new characters in it.... I learnt some nice things about Ruby, and this set up her character to be a really interesting one... I'll agree, when I first watched it, I was exicted and gave the bad parts a pass because I wanted to see where the episode would end up. But the whole church scene at the end just felt like a poor rehash of 'Father's day' without any of the interesting parts. I gave the music a pass, but it definitely needed reverb added to make it sound diegetic. In addition, I haven't watched this actor before in anything notable but I don't know what this doctor's character traits are yet. I hope the new season picks up well because if it starts feeling awful again, I'm just not going to watch it and I'll wait for your reviews instead.
I don't actually think the doctor and ruby getting along so quickly was a problem. It seemed like she was just charmed by him very quickly which happens sometimes. Its not like Rose who only meets him in the midst of chaos. Ruby met him before and liked him a little before the chaos. Also I think the good thing is that all the ongoing parts of this episode, the stuff we will see in season 1, is all great. The problems are really just the plot of this episode and the goblins.
7:47 "The Amazing claim that she had fostered over 30 Children in her life" - My own children were fostered, Reasons why dont matter - But That's not such an amazing claim... In fact, my Daughters foster Carer is only shy of that number by about 5... She has fostered 25 children, 10 became permanent members of the family... ... There is a bit of a misconception that Fostering is always long term, but it can be for a few mere months or even weeks so it is actually very feasible! Also, The Police Officer - And the Sonic detecting the ring in his pocket... I dunno! Again I woudl not trust the websites as sources, but there is a smell of Disney to that as it seems to be "Borrowing heavily" from the Doctor Who TV Movie with Paul McGann... How at the end McGann's 8th Doctor tried to give Grace and that young lad "Advice for the Future" that they woudl not yet have experienced but the Doctor had already seen... It STINKS of Hollywood Cliche! Now, I dont have a big issue with it - I actually like the idea that The Doctor can make "Tiny Adjustments" by dropping tiny hints... But it is way too easy to abuse as well and that concerns me!!! I can believe that was Disney Mandated as it STINKS of Hollywood Cliché Ideas!!! Someone else has mentioned that The Doctor was told Cherry's Name... Though I easily woudl have looked past that anyway as they were clearly borrowing ideas from teh TV Movie meaning - Yeah, The Doctor having some idea of "Future Events" when he shouldn't... Again, CLICHE... But yeah, Ruby did mention it! Easy to miss though! I am also a bit fairer than you... When I watched it, I gave it a 7 out of 10, I still give it a 7 Out of 10 as while it is WAY TOO FULL OF CLICHE... The pacing is off, and to much is far to contrived, It is enjoyable! That said, its a WEAK 7/10... Compared to other Doctor Who Episodes, including eth Chibnall Era... Yeah - I think a 5 is fair!
Honestly i think the episode is really charming, yeah the plot is nothing new and a little bit silly but everyone just comes off so likeable i think its a great introduction to the new doctor
Yes it did and it was a massive cringe fest. I don't watch Doctor Who to see them break into a big song and dance when faced with a threat. Absolute horse plop. RTD has lost his mind.
After Mrs Flood's TARDIS line, it should've just cut to some random shocked kid instead, it'd be another character for people to guess about, and less cringe
"Apologies this video took so long to make" you don't have to apologize for nothing. Your videos are always top quality content, and i'm always looking forward to seeing them. Hope you feel better!
And to think we used to complain about Peter Capaldi 🤦♂️. The show has been shite since he left and some of the best episodes have been during his era.
the funny thing about the mid-credit break is I thought it was setting up some big mystery because ive never seen East Enders...i was all hyped about "ooo what kind of mystery cosmic old lady is living besides the next companion?" now that i know what it is i think the episode is worse in my opinion
I don’t mind that the Goblins sing. But the sound should sound like it came from the eras of medieval fantasy. Not a semi-modern pop song. They should stick to the same themes
By Christmas episode standards I thought it was kinda cool To me Christmas episodes are always below the standard of regular doctor who and this was fine, really did a decent job at endearing ruby to the audience It wasn’t as cool as the 3 that preceded it but I liked it fine
I may be in the minority but I really enjoyed this episode. I believe the snowman scene being added at the request of Disney was in the in vision commentary for the episode
One criticism I disagree with is calling the Doctor Gullible for believing the Timeless Child story. This would be a fair criticism after series 12, but I think after Series 13, meeting Tecteun and literally seeing visions of her past, it's perfectly reasonable for the Doctor to believe it.
5/10 is generous, dude. I gave it a 2/10 WORST XMas special since the Dr, the widow and the wardrobe. Too much time spent on the family, no real threat, no time spent on the actual villains of the episode, I don't get "Time Lord" vibes from 15, but rather likeable weirdo and that song dance routine was UTTER cringe.
Personally I don’t see any problem with a focus on the family. Whilst it’s a Christmas special, it’s also the first introduction to the new companion and first proper look at the new doctor in action. In that regard the closest comparison is probably the Christmas Invasion. Whilst I still think that was a much better episode, even that had a very heavy focus on Rose and her family, and we’d already had a season with them. In this case it makes sense to have a focus on the family to get to know the new companion better. Also it’s a Christmas episode, Christmas stories typically focus around themes of family because it’s Christmas.
@@tonaerio If I wanted to watch a family drama: I'd watch Coronation Street. I don't mind family in New Who World, but NOTHING was happening. They were all literally sitting around in the house doing nothing. Runaway Bride - there was a wedding. Voyage of the damned - A party on a spaceship, Husbands of River Song had various timelines (if I watched it) And damn near 80-90% of the episode was spent on the family and no time was spent on the antagonist. My point is: make the show entertaining, thrilling and logical. If you enjoyed the episode: fantastic. I thought the show was trash, which is sad because the show could use some solid storytelling, for a change.
@UnderTheKoscheii Time Lord vibes: someone who has seen a lot, wise beyond their years, experienced, cultured, sees the big picture, insightful, smarter than they lead on. Do I need to keep explaining? 🤦♂️
Did you steal the idea of the Doctor having to sing acapella because the band refuses to play off of me, or is this just a case of great minds think alike? That was literally my first suggestion of how that scene might have been improved.
And I thought I didn't like it, but Harry Osborne from the amazing spiderman 2 popping up for once with Supreme pedantry, I don't want to be like that. Still don't like it though, just don't have as many fake justifications other than how it felt in my soul
Sure Gibson is 19, but at least she's not playing a _gorgeous_ 15-year-old as Finney was, so it's only Stanley Kubrick Light this time around. It is probably hoping too much that Gibson was swapped out because of awareness the optics of associating queerness with hebephilia in a show RTD said was to send messages to kids may be less than politic. At least a 19-year-old is above the UK ages of consent and drinking out, but context matters.
I wondered if that might be the reason for the abrupt decision to ditch Millie; I can imagine Disney becoming alarmed that, if people start shipping these two (which they will), it all heads a bit too Epstein-esque for a modern audience! RTD started the indulgence in Doctor/companion shipping. In classic Who the Doctor/companion relationship was paternal for the duration of the 60s (if there was any implied shipping it was between companions - e.g. Ian and Barbara, Ben and Polly, Jamie and Victoria/Jamie and Zoe); platonic friends in the 70s and mentorial in the 80s - making it romantic in the 00s was intended to appeal to the Buffy audience demographic.
Wow. You really didn’t like this episode. Your criticisms seem a bit random in some parts. Like the Doctor being on the roof of Ruby’s house. To me it seemed obvious from the beginning of the episode in the night club that he was investigating something suspicious that appeared to center around Ruby. My brain assumed he was nearby observing Ruby’s home for unusual activity. So him being on the roof at that point didn’t seem all that jarring. Her apartment is in the attic so the roof is a pretty good vantage point to watch for weird occurrences. I thought the episode was a fun bit of Christmas ridiculousness. Most of the Doctor Who Christmas specials are silly romps with fantastical stuff going on. Remember A Christmas Carol with flying fish and even a shark during Matt Smith’s era? Or the mix of Santa Clause and Alien face eating monsters during Capaldi’s era? Or the Superhero Christmas special? Doctor Who Christmas episodes are always goofy, over the top, nonsensical fun in my experience. I don’t tend to take them too seriously. Edit: Gotta admit the song in the middle of the episode did jar me a bit. In the sprit of the silliness of Doctor Who at Christmas I’m ok with it, but gotta admit it was weird. Bet Davies will do a musical episode…just hope Davies uses Buffy’s Once More With Feeling as a guide if he does go that direction. There needs to be an in universe reason for it happening and hopefully some good character development along with the singing. Just got to your discussion of Christmas. Obviously my take on Christmas specials won’t do much for my argument here. 😂😂😂😂😂
I haven’t watched this video yet, but the answer is yes, it did suck. I probably won’t carry on watching if they carry on with that terrible direction of this episode. 😢 it isn’t Mary Poppins, where it’s meant to be a musical 😂
I questioned so many decisions in the first half of this episode it caused me to stop watching. Really disappointing from RTD. I didn't even like the new Tardis animation!
rather off topic but i really really hope the "devils chord" episode 3 of the new series isn't based on the myth that a tritone was banned by the catholic church for sounding "satanic" like fr in musical circles this idea is so cringe at this point
Ok I had to stop watching this "review" because all it was in the first 5 mins was nitpicking and making them seem like big problems when they are not I think you need to redo this video when your healthy and re watch the episode 😅
I think you really like this show and won’t admit it’s obvious problems and that’s why you leave passive aggressive comments on criticism of it😂imaging being that weak minded and stupid you can’t handle someone pointing out your show sucks in it’s 400th season😂😂😂

I think it might be the first time that I don't agree with your opinion. I kind of feel like you are making small things big. I just think it was fun, with good actors, nice cinematography. It is nice
I like how Millie Gibson's performance went down so well, she's not coming back for a second season with no explanation. So, do we all think that the big twist is that its Ruby who drops herself off at the church?

Funny Disney felt like the Doc needed clarified on who he is but the Davina stuff was kept. I was very very lost with that part of the show (non-UK viewer)
As a UK viewer who has never heard of her or her show, I just thought it was made up for Doctor Who, so just went with it. I suppose the name dropping when he said merry Christmas to her was probably weird for you, but my mum had already explained to me who she was, so it wasn't as jarring to me.
How?? I've never heard of her but I still understand what was going on

Maybe this is just me, but I think the tears when Ruby is gone are more for him than Ruby. I think he's imagining what his life would be like if it become like Carla's in the new timeline, with all the companions he once had gone.
also, calling it now: that woman who dropped Ruby off isn't her mother. It is older Ruby.
Thank christ for this video. I genuinely have no memory of the rest of the episode after I saw a baby on a conveyor belt and the Return of the Jedi music number. I was too busy trying to borrow a CPAP from the old lady next door before i suffocated from laughing too much.
~16:10 I'm happy I can recognize Super Mario 64 music now, lol
I’m an American who had no ideas who davina McCall was or the show but I’m not stupid I know of the concept of the show. There’s lots of them
Ngl I thought this was a great episode, Ncuti is great, was a lot of fun
Just to confirm, the snowman scene was 100% added after screenings, I believe it was filmed in October last year? Almost a year after the episode itself was filmed!
I think the controversy stems from who made the decision, as it has been militantly defended by Whovians that Disney has zero impact on the show and only has the rights to air it.
The snowman scene was explained in the in vision commentary.
I’m so glad the goblin king was prosthetic and not cheap CGI
harry remember me? is juan
I'm so glad Gareth Roberts got a cameo on this story, even if he got Hot Fuzz'd
So that bloody transphobe got to be in a doctor who story? Who the hell did he cameo as?

Everyone has been ill recently. Welcome back
I’m in five guys with my chips and drinky, ready to watch
I watched this while tripping on lsd - fucking loved it highly recommend
"Then McCall's up Ruby" NO. Bad Harry. Bad.
Russel said about the snowman scene that in the commentary of the episode im pretty sure
Mrs Flood is going to be a much more important character and so i think her scenes will make more sense in retrospect.
I think Mrs. Flood could be a reimaging of the Doctors mother from the books Mrs. Penalope Gate = Floodgate
I hope the new season picks up well because if it starts feeling awful again, I'm just not going to watch it and I'll wait for your reviews instead.
i thought the first interaction between The Doctor and Cherry includes her introducing herself?
He got brainwashed by Chris Chibnall. I didn't know that Doctor Who showrunners nowadays need to try and RUIN the show
You know that have made the characters sing random before and doctor who has always been cringe that’s just a charm to it

"Apologies this video took so long to make" you don't have to apologize for nothing. Your videos are always top quality content, and i'm always looking forward to seeing them. Hope you feel better!
And to think we used to complain about Peter Capaldi 🤦♂️. The show has been shite since he left and some of the best episodes have been during his era.
the funny thing about the mid-credit break is I thought it was setting up some big mystery because ive never seen East Enders...i was all hyped about "ooo what kind of mystery cosmic old lady is living besides the next companion?"
now that i know what it is i think the episode is worse in my opinion
I don’t think there’s meant to be any romantic connection with ruby and the doctor aswell, just rushed bad writing
I wish the goblins sounded more goblin-y
I don’t mind that the Goblins sing. But the sound should sound like it came from the eras of medieval fantasy. Not a semi-modern pop song. They should stick to the same themes
By Christmas episode standards I thought it was kinda cool
To me Christmas episodes are always below the standard of regular doctor who and this was fine, really did a decent job at endearing ruby to the audience
It wasn’t as cool as the 3 that preceded it but I liked it fine
Yeah, I don't like how they're playing down Ncuti's age. He's not a teenager, he's 30. Let him be 30, it's weird.
I personally enjoyed it, It's a great first episode and It's 100% a christmas special.
@UnderTheKoscheii Grasping at what? Its called an opinion. I don't need you to agree with me.
Do you need me to explain that to you, as well?
I think Ncuti is miscast. 🤷
no offence but idk who would be alienated by a tv show that finds people’s long lost family, aren’t there a bunch of them??😂
I’m from the UK and I had no idea who she was or about the show, but I just understood it from context straight away
COMPLAINTS TO WHO - BBC OR DISNEY ? 🤣🤣🤣😂

Regulated rent still exists for long-established tenants in London. They're on the Fair Rent register.
I think sometimes you need to remember the purpose of this show is entertainment
You could use that argument for any TV show or movie though.
