How do you play Gala at your house? (Same name, different game.)

- I came across Gala while researching a different historic game, but when I came back to it I found something completely different!
Gala is called "the Farmer's Chess." found in lists of Chess variants, but it's really not very chess-like. The pieces change movement style depending on where they are on the board, and there are strict rules as to when captures can be made. Each player has two "Galas" (the Kings in this game) and to win, you must capture both opposing Galas. Looks like it would take some getting used to.
Gala is also a traditional game played on the Island of Sulawesi - a race game not to far removed from other games from that part of the world. In fact, the game board looks like an Ashte Kashti board from India. It's an entrapment game with a Placement Phase and a Movement Phase. There's also a variant which introduces custodial capture to the rules. The asymmetrical peg count is interesting. I assume it must have taken a lot of experimentation to settle on just the right balance.
00:00 - The mystery begins.

This a great video, thank you!
Totally agree about needing a cheat sheet for The Farmer's Chess. It feels like it's just a few degrees too complicated, with a few too many exceptions and edge cases.
The second Gala is really interesting, I'm gonna have to put a set together and give it a go.
Yes a cheat sheet is a must.
